Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Commedia and Canzoniere of Dante Alighieri, Vol. 2 of 2: A New Translation, With Notes, Essays and a Biographical Introduction Want of space has hindered me, even after the most liberal allowance on the part of the publishers, from fully carrying out the programme of Dante Studies announced in the first volume. Those which now appear will, I hope, he found of some interest. The others must wait for a more or less distant opportunity, or, more probably, be left to other hands. I have no reason, on the whole, to complain of the recep tion which my work has so far met with at the hands of its critics. It is not my intention to convert my preface into an apologia, discussing the points which they have raised, either as to my translation or my biography, and I am content to endeavour to profit, as I best may, alike by their praise or blame. A translator of Dante has spent his labour in vain if he has not learnt to say Lascia, dir lo genti. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
