Book excerpt: Joseph Rykwert is one of the major architectural historians of this century. THE DANCING COLUMN is his most controversial and challenging work to date. A decade in preparation, it is a deeply erudite, clearly written, and wide-ranging deconstruction of the system of column and beam known as the "orders of architecture". Rykwert traces the analogy between columns and/or buildings and the human body. 315 illustrations.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Column and the Arch Essays on Architectural History: With Illustrations Some of these essays have been already printed, and I have to thank the proprietors of the American Architect and the Architectural Record for permission to repeat them here; others of them appear now for the first time. I have brought them together with the wish to trace in sequence the main thread that binds the successive phases of European architecture, and the evolution of the two leading features of its forms, the classic order and the arch. I have passed by the Byzantine style because it was a collateral development, and outside the cycle which, beginning with Greek architecture, returned upon itself in the Renaissance. For a like reason I have touched but lightly on the Gothic, a splendid growth that structurally was the completion of the Romanesque, but, as a matter of form, was hors de ligne, like the Byzantine, and like it had no successor; for the logical predecessor of the Renaissance was the Romanesque, and the development of the older forms was finished when that merged in the pointed Gothic. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Classical Orders of Architecture elaborates on the classical orders of architecture, including Classicism, Tuscan orders, Doric orders, Ionic orders, and Corinthian orders. The publication first examines the teaching of the orders, need for a new handbook of the orders, Roman and Renaissance theorists, traditional systems of proportion, and metric system of measurement. The text then ponders on historical background and orders in detail. Discussions focus on the Greek orders and comparative Tuscan orders, Doric orders, Ionic orders, Corinthian orders, and Composite orders. The book tackles the orders in detail, including the five orders, Tuscan order, Tuscan capital and entablature, Tuscan base and pedestal, Doric order, Doric base and pedestal, Ionic order and volute, Ionic capital and entablature, Ionic base and pedestal, and the Corinthian order. The manuscript then reviews the use of the orders, as well as diminution and fluting, rustication, pediments, moldings and their enrichment, and characteristics of Classicism. The text is a valuable source of information for architects, historians, and researchers interested in the classical orders of architecture.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Through the Arch captures UGA's colorful past, dynamic present, and promising future in a novel way: by surveying its buildings, structures, and spaces. These physical features are the university's most visible--and some of its most valuable--resources. Yet they are largely overlooked, or treated only passingly, in histories and standard publications about UGA. Through text and photographs, this book places buildings and spaces in the context of UGA's development over more than 225 years. After opening with a brief historical overview of the university, the book profiles over 140 buildings, landmarks, and spaces, their history, appearance, and past and current usage, as well as their namesake, beginning with the oldest structures on North Campus and progressing to the newest facilities on South and East Campus and the emerging Northwest Quadrant. Many profiles are supplemented with sidebars relating traditions, lore, facts, or alumni recollections associated with buildings and spaces. More than just landmarks or static elements of infrastructure, buildings and spaces embody the university's values, cultural heritage, and educational purpose. These facilities--many more than a century old--are where students learn, explore, and grow and where faculty teach, research, and create. They harbor the university's history and traditions, protect its treasures, and hold memories for alumni. The repository for books, documents, artifacts, and tools that contain and convey much of the accumulated knowledge and wisdom of human existence, these structures are the legacy of generations. And they are tangible symbols of UGA's commitment to improve our world through education. Guide includes 113 color photos throughout 19 black-and-white historical photos Over 140 profiles of buildings, landmarks, and spaces Supplemental sidebars with traditions, lore, facts, and alumni anecdotes 6 maps
