Book excerpt: The composition, which the editors entitle the "Book of Thoth", is preserved on over forty Graeco-Roman Period papyri from collections in Berlin, Copenhagen, Florence, New Haven, Paris, and Vienna. The central witness is a papyrus of fifteen columns in the Berlin Museum. Written almost entirely in the Demotic script, the Book of Thoth is probably the product of scribes of the "House of Life", the temple scriptorium. It comprises largely a dialogue between a deity, usually called "He-who-praises-knowledge" (presumably Thoth himself) and a mortal, "He-who-loves-knowledge". The work covers such topics as the scribal craft, sacred geography, the underworld, wisdom, prophecy, animal knowledge, and temple ritual. Particularly remarkable is one section (the "Vulture Text") in which each of the 42 nomes of Egypt is identified with a vulture. The language is poetic; the lines are often clearly organized into verses. The subject-matter, dialogue structure, and striking phraseology raise many issues of scholarly interest; especially intriguing are the possible connections between this Egyptian work, in which Thoth is called "thrice-great", and the classical Hermetic Corpus, in which Hermes Trismegistos plays the key role. The first volume comprises interpretative essays, discussion of specific points such as the manuscript tradition, script, and language. The core of the publication is the transliteration of the Demotic text, translation, and commentary. A consecutive translation, glossary, bibliography, and indices conclude the first volume. The second volume contains photographs of the papyri, almost all of which reproduce their original size.

Book excerpt: The coastal acropolis of Taposiris Magna, 45 km west of Alexandria on Egypt's north coast, was founded by Ptolemy Philadelphos II in the early third century BC. Between 1998 and 2004, Hungarian excavations, led by charismatic archaeologist Gyozo Vörös, revealed many of the hidden secrets of the history of this important site. Within the Egyptian-style pylons and enclosure walls, the team discovered the foundations of a Greek-style sanctuary-the only Greek temple so far found in Egypt. That sanctuary was carefully and deliberately dismantled in the Roman period in order to turn the whole temple into a garrisoned fortress: columns from the sanctuary were used to heighten the enclosure walls. Later, at the end of the fourth century, a Christian basilica was constructed inside the fortress complex, and the temple became a monastery. This fully illustrated book reveals all the discoveries of the Hungarian excavations at this remarkably protean site, including plans and reconstructions of the Greek sanctuary and the Byzantine basilica, as well as a series of stunning finds: a beautiful basalt statue of Isis, a cache of Roman bronze cultic paraphernalia, and a hoard of Byzantine gold coins and jewelry.

The result is a compilation of information - archaeological and textual - one can resort to in order to develop strategies to understand architectural and functional variations and recognise schemes of building canons for palaces in Ancient Egypt. In addition, the understanding of Ancient Egyptian palaces is amplified with specialised studies regarding architectural and administrative terminology. The combined evidence shows that there was indeed a variability in function, in architecture and in the physical situation of palaces in Ancient Egypt. Besides a common space program such as the succession of courtyard, portico, vestibule, throne room and the intimate part of the palace, one may observe a variability of the number of aisles or of columns present as well as in the thickness of walls. This fact points to hierarchical rules concerning the importance of the building. As the architecture is often preserved only in its foundations, it is important to learn what kind of walls were load-bearing, what the size of division walls is and which kind of walls once carried columns. All these first observations have to undergo an evaluation process before one can think of discovering a building canon. A general introducing section is followed by contributions covering Ancient Egyptian palaces from Predynastic times until the New Kingdom. More contributions on the subject will follow in the second volume, which will deal mainly with Ancient Near Eastern Palaces as outcome of a palace workshop at the 10th ICAANE, held in 2016 in Vienna.
