Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Two complementing novels of fantastic adventure for young readers in one volume There can be little doubt that contemporary authors of children's fiction whose stories place ordinary children in tales of high adventure, in fantastical lands populated by exotic and mythical characters and creatures, owe an abiding debt to Edith Nesbit. It is widely accepted that she originated this form of fiction for the young, and has left us not only her own classics such as 'Five Children and It' and 'The Phoenix and the Carpet, ' but also potentially offered inspiration for perennial favourites by other writers from, 'The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe' to the internationally successful Harry Potter series. This fourth special volume of her stories from Leonaur brings together 'The Enchanted Castle' and 'The Magic City.' Although not strictly part of a series these two books have a common theme which is central to the power and potential for imagination in children's play. Young heroes and heroines embark on their adventures in real life places which are then magically transformed into fantastic realms. As always these novels offer mature readers a nostalgic passport to more innocent times and introduce young readers to Edith Nesbit's wonderfully crafted descriptive and evocative but economic prose. Leonaur editions are newly typeset and are not facsimiles; each title is available in softcover and hardback with dustjacket; our hardbacks are cloth bound and feature gold foil lettering on their spines and fabric head and tail bands.

Book excerpt: Three wonderful volumes of classic, fantastical childrens fiction Everyone familiar with children's fiction has heard of Edith Nesbit, who is rightly acclaimed as the first modern writer for children and the originator of the children's adventure story. Her influence on other children's writers, including those active and popular today is undeniable, not least because her stories feature believable contemporary children journeying to imaginary worlds and times for adventures with fantastical creatures and magical objects. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A shining Classic Children NovelLike Nesbit's The Railway Children, the story begins when a group of children move from London to the countryside of Kent. The five children - Robert, Anthea, Cyril, Jane, and their baby brother, known as the Lamb - are playing in a gravel pit when they uncover a rather grumpy, ugly, and occasionally malevolent Psammead or sand-fairy, who has the ability to grant wishes. He persuades the children to take one wish each day to be shared among them, with the caveat that the wishes will turn to stone at sunset. This, apparently, used to be the rule in the Stone Age, when all that children wished for was food, the bones of which then became fossils. The five children's first wish is to be "as beautiful as the day". The wish ends at sunset and its effects simply vanish, leading the Psammead to observe that some wishes are too fanciful to be changed to stone. Celebrated for many generations, Five Children and It has been able to sustain its magical element through its lovable characters and the clear portrayal of the ingenuous wishes. Book excerpt: A Sunday Times Best Book of the Year: The “informative and entertaining” first major biography of the trailblazing, controversial children’s author (The Washington Post). Born in 1858, Edith Nesbit is today considered the first modern writer for children and the inventor of the children’s adventure story. In The Life and Loves of E. Nesbit, award-winning biographer Eleanor Fitzsimons uncovers the little-known details of her life, introducing readers to the Fabian Society cofounder and fabulous socialite who hosted legendary parties and had admirers by the dozen, including George Bernard Shaw. Through Nesbit’s letters and archival research, Fitzsimons reveals “E.” to have been a prolific lecturer and writer on socialism and shows how Nesbit incorporated these ideas into her writing, thereby influencing a generation of children—an aspect of her literary legacy never before examined. Fitzsimons’s riveting biography brings new light to the life and works of this remarkable writer and woman. “Meticulous and invaluable...exceptionally illuminating and detailed.” —The Wall Street Journal “Fitzsimons handily reassembles the hundreds of intricate, idiosyncratic parts of the miraculous E. Nesbit machine.” —The New York Times Book Review “I’ve always loved the work of E. Nesbit—The Railway Children and Five Children and It are my favorites—but I knew nothing about the extraordinary, surprising life of this great figure in children’s literature . . . so gripping that I read [it] in two days.” —Gretchen Rubin, #1 New York Times-bestsellingauthor of The Happiness Project “A charming, lively, and old-fashioned biography . . . highly readable.” —Publishers Weekly “A terrific book.” —Neil Gaiman

First published in 1899, it tells the story of Dora, Oswald, Dicky, Alice, Noel, and Horace Octavius (H. O.) Bastable, and their attempts to assist their widowed father and recover the fortunes of their family; The story is told from a child's point of view. The narrator is Oswald, but on the first page he announces: "It is one of us that tells this story - but I shall not tell you which: only at the very end perhaps I will. While the story is going on you may be trying to guess, only I bet you don't." Their adventures were both touching and funny. The Story of the Treasure Seekers was the first novel for children by Nesbit; it and her later novels exerted considerable influence on subsequent English children's literature, most notably Arthur Ransome's books and C. S. Lewis'The Chronicles of Narnia. Edith Nesbit, the author of the book, was an English author who wrote children's book using the name E. Nesbit. She published approximately forty books for children, and was dubbed "the first modern writer for children" by her biographer Julia Briggs. So well written and funny. From a child's point of view. Good for adults and children with a good understanding of Victorian literature. Scroll Up and Get Your Copy! The second book in Nesbit’s beloved Psammead Trilogy—which also includes Five Children and It (1902) and The Story of the Amulet (1906)—The Phoenix and the Carpet is a tale of curiosity, adventure, and the power of imagination. Siblings Robert, Anthea, Cyril, Jane, and the Lamb live in London with their parents. As Guy Fawkes Night approaches, they collect a small stockpile of fireworks and, in their excitement, decide to test them out ahead of time. They set off several fireworks in their nursery, accidentally burning the carpet and forcing their parents to replace it. The new rug, purchased secondhand, contains a strange egg which Robert accidentally knocks into the fireplace, hatching a beautiful golden Phoenix. They soon learn that the Phoenix, which is reborn every two thousand years, is capable of fulfilling their wishes, and that the carpet has the power of flight. As the story unfolds, the children embark on increasingly thrilling and dangerous adventures, sometimes requiring the help of their friend the Psammead to make it back home. The Phoenix and the Carpet is a fast-paced, endearing novel, a true work of fantasy from one of history’s finest fabulists. It has been adapted several times for film and television, and remains a popular work for children and adults alike. With a beautifully designed cover and professionally typeset manuscript, this edition of Edith Nesbit’s The Phoenix and the Carpet is a classic of English children’s literature reimagined for modern readers.

The stories, previously printed in magazines (like Blackie's Children's Annual), are typical of Nesbit's arch, ironic, clever fantasies for children. The twelve stories in the collection are: "The Cat-hood of Maurice" - a boy abuses the family cat, and learns to see things from the feline point of view. "The Mixed Mine" - two boys find a magic spyglass, and use it to make their fortunes. "Accidental Magic" - Quentin falls asleep on the altarstone at Stonehenge, and wakes in Atlantis. "The Princess and the Hedge-pig" - King Ozymandias and Queen Eliza plan a secret christening for their Princess Ozyliza, to avoid a wicked fairy's curse. Things go awry. "Septimus Septimusson" - he is the seventh son of a seventh son, who can see fairies and hear the beasts speak; and he must seek his fortune. "The White Cat" - a boy finds a china ornament in the attic; it proves to be a magic talisman. "Belinda and Bellamant" - they are a princess and prince suffering curses; a talking bat helps resolve their problems. "Justnowland" - Elsie visits a magic land of giant crows, and a dragon. "The Related Muff" - a sensitive boy, dismissed as a "muff" by his cousins, proves himself a hero in a crisis. "The Aunt and Amabel" - a girl enters a magic world through a wardrobe. "Kenneth and the Carp" - unjustly accused, a boy transforms into a fish and redeems his honor. "The Magician's Heart" - an evil magician distributes curses at royal christenings. Complications ensue. Nesbit Edith Nesbit (married name Edith Bland; 15 August 1858 - 4 May 1924) was an English author and poet; she published her books for children under the name of E. Nesbit. She wrote or collaborated on more than 60 books of fiction for children. Nesbit published approximately 40 books for children, including novels, collections of stories and picture books. Collaborating with others, she published almost as many more. According to her biographer Julia Briggs, Nesbit was "the first modern writer for children" "(Nesbit) helped to reverse the great tradition of children's literature inaugurated by Lewis Carroll, George MacDonald and Kenneth Grahame, in turning away from their secondary worlds to the tough truths to be won from encounters with things-as-they-are, previously the province of adult novels." Briggs also credits Nesbit with having invented the children's adventure story. Noël Coward was a great admirer of hers and, in a letter to an early biographer Noel Streatfeild, wrote "she had an economy of phrase, and an unparalleled talent for evoking hot summer days in the English countryside."
