Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Church and the Eastern Empire IT has often been said that the Eastern Church has no history independently Of the State; and this is so far true, that during long periods the annals of that Com munion have little else to show than lists of patriarchs. At the same time, at certain intervals episodes of great interest and importance occur, and from first to last the influence of the Church on the social and religious life of the Eastern Empire is a subject well worthy of study. To relate, however briefly, those episodes, and to trace the working of that influence, is the object of the pre sent volume. The early period, that Of the first four General Councils, belongs to the history of the Church at large, and therefore is only touched upon here as far as subsequent events depended upon it; it is the later, or Byzantine, age of the Eastern Church which we have especially to consider. But even thus limited the subject is a vast one, far surpassing the possibility of adequate treatment in a work like this. But the object will be achieved if a wider interest be awakened in this period of Church History, and fresh attention be directed to these earlier attempts to work out problems in Church and State which are still unsolved. But, if I may be permitted to refer to the labours of the eminent scholar who has already done so much for elucidating in this country the nature of Oriental religions, it is to be hoped that Professor Max Muller may be induced to give us the benefit of his genius and learning in drawing forth the mutual relations of the religionsofasiaandthechristianfaithtoeachother, in meir past history and in their future prospects.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. This book was released on 2015-07-12 with total page 420 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Lectures on the History of the Eastern Church In February 1856, when Arthur Penrhyn Stanley had been Canon of Canterbury for nearly five years, he had published his Memorials of Canterbury (1854), a Commentary on the Epistles to the Corinthians (1855), and had just completed his Sinai and Palestine, the fruit of his travels in those regions in 1852-53. And accordingly we find him writing to his friend Hugh Pearson to say that the remaining work of his life would be either a history of the chosen people, or a history of early Christianity, beginning from the earliest times and continuing as late as possible. He was enabled to carry out both these projects in a way which he could not have foreseen at the time of writing; for in December of the same year he was appointed Regius Professor of Ecclesiastical History at Oxford. His biographer tells us that on the morning after he had accepted the appointment he burst into his mother's room exclaiming, "I have settled my first course. I shall begin with Abraham; he is the true beginning of ecclesiastical history." A few days later he is writing again to Pearson outlining the plan that was afterwards matured in the Lectures on the Eastern Church. In February 1857, he delivered, with striking success, as his inaugural course, the lectures comprised under the title "Introduction" in this volume. They deal respectively with the "province," the "methods," and the "advantages" of the study of Church History, and there can be no better introduction to the subject for any student than these three discourses taken together with Bishop Collins's little hand-book, and an article by Dr. Harnack in The Contemporary Review for August 1886. We shall see also that these lectures are no less significant of Stanley himself than helpful to his readers. In the long vacation of 1857 - just fifty years ago - Stanley set out from Canterbury (where he continued to reside until a death in February 1858 placed at his disposal a canonry in Christ Church, Oxford), together with two young comrades and a courier named Djarlieb, whose performance did not equal his promise. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Two Empires: The Church and the World The present volume contains lectures on Church History delivered by Dr. Westcott at Cambridge during the earlier years of his tenure of the Regius Professorship of Divinity. At that time the Dixie Professorship of Ecclesiastical History had not been founded, so that there was no other provision for the teaching of Church History than that which the Divinity Professors might be willing to supply. In the lectures here presented to the public I seem to be able to distinguish three courses, the first being on the Early Persecutions, the second on the Age of Constantine, and the third on the Nicene Council. But the manuscript does not entirely agree with such fragmentary outlines of these courses as I have been able to discover, so that it is not improbable that considerable portions of the lectures were committed to writing subsequently to their original delivery. There has certainly been some later revision. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Church's Task Under, the Roman Empire: Four Lectures With Preface, Notes, and an Excursus These four Lectures, delivered in the Oxford Schools in the Michaelmas Term of 1904, are an attempt to sketch in broad outlines the nature of the task which lay before the Church when she set out in obedience to the divine call to evangelize the gracco-roman world, and the degree in which she was enabled to fulfil that task within the compass of the first five centuries.
