Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Christian Church in Relation to Human Experience: A Treatise on Some Ecclesiastical Subjects, Viewed Chiefly With Reference to the Facts of Human Nature and History The history of ecclesiastical opinion is largely that of the maintenance of certain theories. The aim of the ecclesiastic has very generally been, not so much to ascertain what is in conformity with the wants and experience of man, as to uphold this or the other church-system. There is now, however, a considerable change of opinion in this respect. The view is widely and increasingly held that matters belonging to the outward manifestation of the religious life are to be considered rather in the light of their adaptation to actual circumstances than in accordance with theories. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study ponders different ways Christian thinkers understood humanity in its relationship to divine grace. It names fallacies that have in the past skewed theological understanding of that relationship. It argues that the philosophy of Charles Sanders Peirce avoided those same fallacies and provides a novel frame of reference for rethinking the theology of grace. The author shows how the insights of other American philosophers flesh out undeveloped aspects of PeirceÕs thought. He formulates a metaphysics of experience derived from his philosophical analysis. Finally, he develops an understanding of supernatural grace as the transmutation and transvaluation of human experience.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One of the most important movements in recent philosophy and theology is the “process thought” associated with the name Alfred North Whitehead, the distinguished Cambridge thinker who died in 1947. In North America this conceptuality is increasingly being used by Christian theologians for the restatement of Christian faith, worship, and practice. The present book is the first attempt, by a British theologian, to apply this kind of thinking to the interpretation of the church itself. In an earlier book, “The Last Things” in a Process Perspective, Dr. Pittenger interpreted death, judgement, heaven, and hell in this new way. Now he turns to the church, its nature, its purpose, its ministry, its concern for the world, its interest in social issues, and seeks to show how the Christian fellowship is a “social process” in which the Love which is God and which was incarnate in Jesus is continuing to work in the affairs of men through the community which took to Jesus as its Lord and Master. “Process thought” is at last receiving its due recognition in Britain. In this book the reader will find an application of that conceptuality to the institution which all too often has been looked upon as wooden and static. The contention of the author is that the church, rightly understood, is a dynamic, living, vital, and forward-looking fellowship. He believes that acceptance of this truth will revitalize the discipleship of Christians and will attract and interest those who hitherto have dismissed the church as an outworn and dead “establishment.”

Book excerpt: An important contribution to the ongoing discussion of the church's relationship to social development, this book contains the revised conference proceedings from the consultation The Church in Response to Human Need,Ó held in Wheaton, Illinois, in June of 1983. In the papers collected here writers from five continents consider whether the Bible indicates any method for ministry among the poor; the place of the poor in God's plan; God's purpose and the movement of human history; the nature of the gospel of the kingdom; and the interrelation of the gospel and human culture. In addition to the individual papers, the book includes the statement Transformation,Ó which was produced by the consultation as a whole.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Uniquely authoritative and wide-ranging in its scope, The Oxford Dictionary of the Christian Church is the indispensable one-volume reference work on all aspects of the Christian Church. It contains over 6,000 cross-referenced A-Z entries, and offers unrivalled coverage of all aspects of this vast and often complex subject, including theology, churches and denominations, patristic scholarship, the bible, the church calendar and its organization, popes, archbishops, saints, and mystics. In this revision, innumerable small changes have been made to take into account shifts in scholarly opinion, recent developments, such as the Church of England's new prayer book (Common Worship), RC canonizations, ecumenical advances and mergers, and, where possible, statistics. A number of existing articles have been rewritten to reflect new evidence or understanding, for example the Holy Sepulchre entry, and there are a few new articles. Perhaps most significantly, a great number of the bibliographies have been updated. Established since its first appearance in 1957 as an essential resource for ordinands, clergy, and members of religious orders, ODCC is an invaluable tool for academics, teachers, and students of church history and theology, as well as for the general reader.

This book explores the appeal to experience in the Christologies of Friedrich Schleiermacher and Karl Rahner, two theologians often accused of reducing theology to anthropology by allowing apologetic concerns to dictate their method in their appeal to experience. This work demonstrates that both theologians develop their hermeneutics under the tutelage of theology even while using «experience» as a category by which to provide leverage in apprehending Jesus. Both the perils and possibilities of their Christologies are explored in preparation for an account of experience construed sacramentally.
