Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ricky Delgado works as a chicken hanger at the poultry plant in Rugoso, Texas, a small border town just thirty miles south of Laredo. His quiet, illegal lifestyle is disrupted when he learns that his brother Tomás has been shot and injured shortly after crossing the border. Together, Ricky and Tomás must make a decision: to risk their illegal status and seek justice, or remain silent and endure the injustices common to all “wetbacks” within the states. Meanwhile, Ricky is fighting a battle within his own body, a disease he acquired in the poultry plant, unbeknownst to everyone but the crooked manager and the company’s doctor. The townspeople of Rugoso have long been used to Mexicans entering the states illegally. The street signs, billboards, and food labels are printed in both English and Spanish to accommodate more consumers. Even the judicial system has a growing number of authorities with Spanish last names, and Herschel Gandy is sick of it. A wealthy Rugoso ranch owner and self-appointed defender of the border, he has taken to firing warning shots at illegals crossing over on his ranch. But when he finds a bloodied backpack near the place he had been shooting, the repercussions of his cover-up game affect the entire town. Warren Coleman, the best border patrol agent in Rugoso, has been struggling with his conscience since allowing a trio of illegal aliens to cross one morning. One was obviously injured. After stopping a van smuggling drugs over the border, Warren shoots and kills the driver in his partner’s defense. He is immediately thrown into national spotlight for his heroism, or brutality, depending on the source. While visiting his partner in the hospital, Warren again runs into the illegal with the injured hand. Fearing the consequences of his decisions, Warren must decide between leaving Rugoso for a new start, or pursuing his growing suspicion that there is more to discover about the Mexican’s injury. The Chicken Hanger confronts the present-day controversy of politics and prejudice along the Texas-Mexico border. Rehder weaves between multiple perspectives and opinions of those protecting America and those hoping to become Americans, and asks whether a man’s worth is measured by his citizenship, or by the life he leads. Long-standing arguments about border control in the South and the motives of opposing sides create a suspenseful tale of one illegal immigrant’s fight for justice in the land of the free.

Book excerpt: Inside these pages, you will find step-by-step instructions for a mobile broiler chicken shelter for pastured poultry that is used by farmers and homesteaders all over the country. Raising chickens on grass provides them with a healthy lifestyle and a delicious flavor. You can raise just enough of them to feed your family or scale up to include pastured poultry as a profitable part of your farm business. John Suscovich has raised thousands of chickens using these mobile shelters, a main enterprise on his farm in Connecticut. These chicken tractors were created using the best elements from other designs. They are easy to move and provide a good life for the chickens. With a little bit of creativity, they can also be modified for seasonal egg-layer housing, rabbits, ducks and forts for your kids. Not only does this book contain the plans and supply list to build your first chicken tractor, but it gives you some insight into how to use it and what mindset you should have if you are to become a happy and successful farmer. John also walks you through the light carpentry skills you need to build these chicken tractors and teaches you the most commonly used knots on a farm. You may learn these skills for this project, but you'll be able to apply them on your farm for years to come.

Now she’s the high priestess of a wild new cult called “Remo” on the voodoo-friendly island of Haiti, where all hell is breaking loose. Before Remo can sort out sex-crazed cultists from the purely evil deities, he’s lured into the lair of the lovely Dawn, losing a battle with self-control that could be the beginning of the end. Chiun, too, is losing her own battle against an old enemy with the power to challenge, perhaps even defeat, Sinanju. Can anything stop Remo from becoming the Destroyer of old, with all the power – channelled through his ancient lover, Kali – to destroy the world? Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In his new collection of short stories, author Dennis Kolb shares the wisdom that came laced with the bumps and bruises he earned along the way through his life. From hunting for whitetail deer to the challenges of looking for a job after leaving the navy, Kolb shares funny moments and challenging times with wit and humor. He knew he needed to be willing to make the mistakes and happily take his lumps as he journeyed toward his goal-a life well-lived. Along the way, he imparts his own brand of wisdom-for example, you can't reason with animals or machines, and sometimes repeating the same action gets different results. He knows about humiliation, and he knows about success; he also knows that timing is everything! In Never Take Advice from an Unscarred Man, Kolb recalls his time as a small kid through the last half of the forties, his crazy teen years, his life in the navy, and beyond. The educational bruises and mistakes Kolb recounts have had far more influence on his happiness and success than any formal education could have. In these charming, homespun stories, he offer memories of times past for all to experience and enjoy.

Book excerpt: Although much is known about the mature Truman Capote--his literary genius and flamboyant life-style--details of his childhood years spent in Monroeville, Alabama, have remained a mystery. Truman Capote's Southern Years explores Capote's formative years, the abandonment by his mother, and his early life in the care of elderly relatives. In Monroeville young Capote formed significant bonds and played childhood games with his cousin, Jennings Faulk Carter, and next door neighbor, Nelle Harper Lee. Through the tales told here by Carter, readers discover the lively imagination and the early tragedies of a brilliant child.--Provided by publisher.

Book excerpt: “As with the other books in The Wildwater Walking Club series, Step by Step is a wonderful ode to reinvention, to new beginnings, and to friendship more resilient than the rubber sole on a walking shoe. I loved every minute of it.”—Book Perfume Instead of focusing on actually finding some health coach clients, Noreen is dividing her time between sabotaging her relationship with Rick and disaster-fantasizing about ending up living in a tent by the side of the road. Tess is ready to downsize, but can she really figure out how to move on and live small? Rosie is completely overwhelmed with life on the lavender farm, and it doesn’t help matters that Rosie’s dad and Noreen’s mom are conducting most of their romantic interludes at her house. They thought they’d have their lives all figured out by now. But change is blowing in along with the crisp fall air, and they’re finding out that life for 40-to-forever women is not for sissies. Hitting the road again might be just what The Wildwater Walking Club needs. Join Noreen, Tess and Rosie as they walk and talk, talk and walk, share their secrets, and learn to take it step by step. You’ll be lacing up your own sneakers in no time! “The Wildwater Walking Club: Step by Step is a terrific character study, a lesson in the power of positive and honest self-reflection, and, of course, a wise and laugh-provoking look at our human foibles. Claire Cook strikes again.”—Book Reporter From the New York Times, USA Today and international bestselling author of Must Love Dogs, made into a romantic comedy movie starring Diane Lane and John Cusack and now a 7-book series. “A great feel-good story.”—Philadelphia Examiner “Claire Cook (Must Love Dogs) has built a brand writing light-hearted women’s fiction blending kernels of the absurd and comedic in compulsively readable combinations.”— Shelf Awareness “The Wildwater Walking Club is a quick smart read that will get you thinking about walking, friendship, and making time for the things you love.”— BookReporter “Cook’s poignancy and sassy humor resonate with readers; her theme of reinvention uplifts and inspires.” —Savannah Magazine “Readers who enjoy a celebration of friendship will want to walk alongside the Wildwater trio.”—Midwest Book Review “A beach tote couldn’t ask for more.”— Kirkus “Lively and inspiring!”— Hartford Courant “The women of The Wildwater Walking Club are a delightful trio, full of heart and determination. As they—literally—put one foot in front of the other, the three new friends find unlikely paths that point them toward more fulfilling lives. Their journey left me genuinely inspired.”— Jean Reynolds Page “Claire Cook has an original voice, sparkling style, and a window into family life that will make you laugh and cry.”— Adriana Trigiani “Charming, engagingly quirky, and full of fun, Claire Cook just gets it.”— Meg Cabot “Claire Cook infuses her novels with that sassy kind of offbeat humor that makes you giggle, shake your head, and then keep reading. And isn’t that what you want a beach book to do?” —Florida Today

With the help of Mark G. Boyer, who serves as the recorder of Shelby’s words, Cole narrates the story of her life from birth, to puppyhood, into adulthood, and her life with several owners, including Boyer. Included in the thirteen chapters of this novel are Shelby’s adventures and birthdays up to her tenth human year and sixty-seventh dog year. She also tells the story of how she came to live with Boyer and how he has become her translator from dog talk to English. This novel provides the readers—both dog-lovers and others—with a few hours of insight into what a dog says and what she thinks about through the years.
