Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Chess Player's Chronicle, 1877, Vol. 1 I may be allowed to remark that, as many other variations which remain unnoticed will in all probability occur to the student in playing over the subjoined analysis, it must not too readily be assumed that they have altogether escaped observation. It is quite possible, notwithstanding the careful and patient attention bestowed upon it, that some line of play has been overlooked which would considerably strengthen the attack, or it may be the defence. I am disposed, however, in this case, to believe that the ultimate results of my investigations Will not be materially affected. Book Synopsis Chess Rivals of the 19th Century by : Tony Cullen
Download or read book Chess Rivals of the 19th Century written by Tony Cullen and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2020-12-04 with total page 477 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Many historical chess books focus on individual 19th century masters and tournaments yet little is written covering the full scope of competitive chess through the era. This volume provides a comprehensive overview, with more than a third of the 300 annotated games analyzed by past masters and checked by powerful engines. Players such as Max Lange and Cochrane, known to the chess public only by the name given to a fierce attack or gambit, are brought to life. Fifty masters are each given their own chapter, with brief biographies, results and anecdotes and an endgame section for most chapters.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Chess Player's Chronicle, 1860 I see no reason to doubt the fact that the Saxons were acquainted with Chess more than half a century before the time of King Canute, in consequence of their intercourse both with the Danes and the Franks. To be sure a vast deal of confusion and uncertainty results from the vague manner in which the old chroniclers employ the terms, Ludus Latrunculornm, Tabula, Tail, Tad, &c., in all its forms of orthography. We have seen in the versified extract, p. 357, that Tabula certainly means Chess, as is easily proved by the lucky occurrence of the word Rocho afew lines afterwards. In the above quartaia by Gaimar there is no question whatever about the game being Chess; the only question is about the truth of the statement; which can be answered merely by the counter question, Is it consistent with time, place, and circumstances If so we have no more reason to disbelieve it than we have to withhold our assent regarding any other plain fact mentioned in history.
