Book excerpt: Hettie Lou Sayre saw him do it. Looking out her kitchen window, she saw Roger Greenfield murder Megan, his wife and her best friend. Although she did not want to believe it, Hettie knew it was Roger: she had lived next door to the couple for years, and even made eye contact with him as she dialed 911. Roger, a high school teacher since retiring from his law practice and a highly respected member of his small town community, proclaims his innocence- but how can he refute Hettie's testimony? A conviction is virtually assured. When detective Rick Canyon learns of the situation, he knows his long-time friend cannot be guilty and returns to his hometown to investigate the crime. But with the trial only three months away, Rick is finding no evidence in defense of his client; instead, he is running into obstacles: local police who are not too happy to see him return; a scheming and ambitious prosecutor; and an irrefutable eyewitness. "What's going on here?" How can this woman be so sure she saw Roger kill someone when I know in my gut it can't be true?" Canyon is completely baffled by his first- and most important- murder case, but he is determined to find a way to exonerate his friend.
Book Synopsis Capital Punishment in Twentieth-Century Britain by : Lizzie Seal
Download or read book Capital Punishment in Twentieth-Century Britain written by Lizzie Seal and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-03-05 with total page 227 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Capital punishment for murder was abolished in Britain in 1965. At this time, the way people in Britain perceived and understood the death penalty had changed – it was an issue that had become increasingly controversial, high-profile and fraught with emotion. In order to understand why this was, it is necessary to examine how ordinary people learned about and experienced capital punishment. Drawing on primary research, this book explores the cultural life of the death penalty in Britain in the twentieth century, including an exploration of the role of the popular press and a discussion of portrayals of the death penalty in plays, novels and films. Popular protest against capital punishment and public responses to and understandings of capital cases are also discussed, particularly in relation to conceptualisations of justice. Miscarriages of justice were significant to capital punishment’s increasingly fraught nature in the mid twentieth-century and the book analyses the unsettling power of two such high profile miscarriages of justice. The final chapters consider the continuing relevance of capital punishment in Britain after abolition, including its symbolism and how people negotiate memories of the death penalty. Capital Punishment in Twentieth-Century Britain is groundbreaking in its attention to the death penalty and the effect it had on everyday life and it is the only text on this era to place public and popular discourses about, and reactions to, capital punishment at the centre of the analysis. Interdisciplinary in focus and methodology, it will appeal to historians, criminologists, sociologists and socio-legal scholars.

Book excerpt: Italian filmmaker Dario Argento's horror films have been described as a blend of Alfred Hitchcock and George Romero?psychologically rich, colorful, and at times garish, excelling at taking the best elements of the splatter and exploitation genres and laying them over a dark undercurrent of human emotions and psyches. Broken Mirrors/Broken Minds, which dissects such Argento cult films as Two Evil Eyes, The Bird with the Crystal Plumage, Suspiria, and Deep Red, includes a new introduction discussing Argento's most recent films, from The Stendahl Syndrome to Mother of Tears; an updated filmography; and an interview with Argento.
Download or read book Body Horror written by John Taylor and published by Manchester University Press. This book was released on 1998 with total page 226 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Asks why anyone would want to look at shocking photographs. The text questions what happens when the press uses gruesome images to represent accidents and disasters, murder and execution, grief and death. It examines how the press pictures the dead and injured bodies of foreigners, with particular reference to the special conditions of photographing the horror of wars in the Gulf, Bosnia and Rwanda. It argues that hard-hitting documentary photography contributes to public knowledge and helps to define the freedom of the press.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • SELECTED BY THE ECONOMIST AS ONE OF THE BEST BOOKS OF THE YEAR “A rambunctious book that is itself alive with the animal spirits of the marketplace.”—The Wall Street Journal Freedom’s Forge reveals how two extraordinary American businessmen—General Motors automobile magnate William “Big Bill” Knudsen and shipbuilder Henry J. Kaiser—helped corral, cajole, and inspire business leaders across the country to mobilize the “arsenal of democracy” that propelled the Allies to victory in World War II. Drafting top talent from companies like Chrysler, Republic Steel, Boeing, Lockheed, GE, and Frigidaire, Knudsen and Kaiser turned auto plants into aircraft factories and civilian assembly lines into fountains of munitions. In four short years they transformed America’s army from a hollow shell into a truly global force, laying the foundations for the country’s rise as an economic as well as military superpower. Freedom’s Forge vividly re-creates American industry’s finest hour, when the nation’s business elites put aside their pursuit of profits and set about saving the world. Praise for Freedom’s Forge “A rarely told industrial saga, rich with particulars of the growing pains and eventual triumphs of American industry . . . Arthur Herman has set out to right an injustice: the loss, down history’s memory hole, of the epic achievements of American business in helping the United States and its allies win World War II.”—The New York Times Book Review “Magnificent . . . It’s not often that a historian comes up with a fresh approach to an absolutely critical element of the Allied victory in World War II, but Pulitzer finalist Herman . . . has done just that.”—Kirkus Reviews (starred review) “A compulsively readable tribute to ‘the miracle of mass production.’ ”—Publishers Weekly “The production statistics cited by Mr. Herman . . . astound.”—The Economist “[A] fantastic book.”—Forbes “Freedom’s Forge is the story of how the ingenuity and energy of the American private sector was turned loose to equip the finest military force on the face of the earth. In an era of gathering threats and shrinking defense budgets, it is a timely lesson told by one of the great historians of our time.”—Donald Rumsfeld

Download or read book A Subtler Magick written by S. T. Joshi and published by Wildside Press LLC. This book was released on 1996-12-01 with total page 318 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: He was the premier writer of horror fiction in the first half of the 20th Century, perhaps the major American practitioner of the art between the time of Edgar Allan Poe and Stephen King. Born into an upper middle class family in Providence, Rhode Island, Howard Phillips Lovecraft (1890-1937) had a lonely childhood, but read voraciously from his earliest years. He soon became interested in science and astronomy and began penning stories, poetry, and essays in great profusion, publishing them himself when no other market was available. The advent of Weird Tales in 1923 gave him a small outlet for his work, and he attracted a large number of followers, with whom he exchanged literally tens of thousands of letters, many of them quite lengthy. A number of these young correspondents eventually became professional writers and editors themselves. Lovecraft's fame began spreading beyond fandom with the publication of his first significant collection, The Outsider and Others, in 1939, two years after his untimely death. Book jacket.

Download or read book The Murder Gang written by Neil Root and published by The History Press. This book was released on 2018-03-15 with total page 270 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: They were an elite group of renegade Fleet Street crime reporters covering the most notorious British crime between the mid-1930s and the mid-1960s. It was an era in which murder dominated the front and inside pages of the newspapers – the 'golden age' of tabloid crime. Members of the Murder Gang knew one another well. They drank together in the same Fleet Street pubs, but they were also ruthlessly competitive in pursuit of the latest scoop. It was said that when the Daily Express covered a big murder story they would send four cars: one containing their reporters, the other three to block the road at crime scenes to stop other rivals getting through. As a matter of course, Murder Gang members listened in to police radios, held clandestine meetings with killers on the run, made huge payments to murderers and their families – and jammed potatoes into their rivals' exhaust pipes so their cars wouldn't start. These were just the tools of the trade; it was a far cry from modern reporting. Here, Neil Root delves into their world, examining some of the biggest crime stories of the era and the men who wrote them. In turns fascinating, shocking and comical, this tale of true crime, media and social history will have you turning the pages as if they were those newspapers of old.
