Book excerpt: In The Case and Cure of a Deserted Soul, Joseph Symonds (d.1652) explores the nature, causes, and treatment of spiritual depression—a state that arises when God seems to hide his face, leaving the Christian to walk alone in a “dark night of the soul.” Every aspect of this condition is examined with a surgeon’s precision, a philosopher’s insight, and the Word of God’s wisdom on how to gain a firmer footing and emerge from this melancholy hour with renewed strength and vivacity.

Besides, it would be a harsh and absurd proceeding to exempt anything from the class cf corporeal beings, on the ground that it is not exactly like the other constituents of that class. And where individual creature's possess various properties, does not this variety in works of the same class indicate the greatness of the Creator, in making them at the same time different and yet like, amicable yet rivals?

GOD hath given to thee a very noble heart, made only to love Him, and by His love, to be melted and consumed. Through love of Him thou shalt readily accomplish whatsoever thou wilt, and any difficulty shall be soon overcome through desire of virtue; whereas, if by thy own forces thou attempt anything, thou wilt effect nothing. Let the intention of thy heart be well grounded in such sort that thy outward working do spring from within. And though penance and penal exercises be praiseworthy, when moderated with a discretion answerable to the condition of the persons by whom they are wrought, yet very often the best part of them do evaporate into vain complaisance, without any profit, and the toil is all lost, unless they be ruled and governed from within. Man's life on earth is a continual warfare, as holy Job witnesseth. In this warfare thou must watch, and thy watching must consist in purifying and quieting thy spirit in all its motions. When any sudden storm of passions and sensual unquietness ariseth in thy soul, be al- ways ready with speed to settle and pacify the same, in not granting it too much liberty to start or wander out of the right way. Do after this sort so often as unquietness shall assault thee, either in prayer or out of prayer. Then shalt thou be able to pray well, when in this manner thou knowest how to work well. And note that thou do this ever, not with force or violence, but with great mildness; for thy principal exercise must be to quiet thy soul and heart, not suffering that they stray or be disordered, but that always they be at rest.

Excerpt: ... form war into a scientific art, which can scarcely be brought to a high degree of perfection by any nation, if it has not in other respects attained a considerable degree of development. And thus this expression of power, which is at all times dangerous, might have lost, at least on one side, some of its horrors. In short, science facilitates, enlarges, and in various ways secures our condition in life, and removes various obstacles, which prevent the free activity of the spiritual development of mankind. II. Methods of Universal Natural Philosophy* 10. All precepts which can be given for the investigation of nature must spring from the fundamental truth: That the whole of nature is the revelation of an infinite rational will, and that it is the task of science to recognize as much of it as is possible to finite powers. From this great fundamental truth there proceeds a number of fundamental laws, which must hover before the eyes of the naturalist as eternal guiding stars. His chief task is: To seek for Reason in Nature. He must therefore admit that natural laws everywhere harmonize with reason, and that every appearance of an exception to this rule must proceed from the imperfection of his knowledge. No contradiction is possible in the laws of Nature; on the contrary, they are all in the most perfect harmony, and constitute together one sole inextinguishable Whole. If we direct our attention to the cause of the changes, we see that everything proceeds with perfect consistence. If then we direct our attention to what has been effected, we shall be compelled to admire each human representation of surpassing wisdom. We can frequently perceive so distinctly the exact consequence of events, that they may become a principle of...

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Natural Law in the Spiritual World Laws themselves, so far as known to me, is new; and I cannot hope to have escaped the mistakes and misadventures of a first exploration in an unsurveyed land. So general has been the survey that I have not even paused to define specifically to what de partments of the Spiritual World exclusively the principle is to be applied. The danger of making a new principle apply too widely inculcates here the utmost caution. One thing is certain, and I state it pointedly, the application of Natural Law to the Spiritual World has decided and necessary limits. And if elsewhere with undue enthusiasm I seem to magnify the principle at stake, the exaggeration like the extreme amplification Of the moon's disc when near the horizon - must be charged to that almost necessary aberration of light which distorts every new idea while it is yet slowly climbing to its zenith. Excerpt: ... in the heart; and our spirits, or consciences receive and declare this eviQLnce. Great mischief has arisen from the false and delusive notion, that the witness of the Spirit is a kind of inward suggestion, or declaration from God, assuring us that we are beloved, pardoned, &c. and many souls, I fear, have been eternally ruined by this delusion.--I have therefore insisted the longer on this head. I now proceed to a second characteristic of gracious affections. II. The first objective ground of gracious affections is the Transcendently Excellent and Amiable NATUttE of divine things, abstractedly considered; and not any conceived relation they bear to ourselves, or to our own interest. I do not suppose, however, that all relation to our own interest, is wholly excluded from any influence in our gracious affections. Self-interest certainly has a consequential, and succeeding influence in those affections which are spiritual and holy, as I shall endeavour to show. It was beforfe observed, that the affection of love is the fountain of all the other affections; and that Christian love in particular is the fountain of all gracious affections. Now the divine excellency and glory of God, of the word of God, of the works of God, &c. constitute the primary reason why a true saint loves these things; and not anysuppos ed interest that he has in them, or any benefit that he hopes to receive from them, or any such relation to his interest, that self-love can properly be said to be the real foundation of them. Some persons say that all love arises from selflove, and that it is impossible in the nature of things, that any man s..ould love God, or any other being, except as that affection springs from selflove. But this opinion arises. I suppose, from...

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: . Renewal of Life by Transmission. The most notable distinction between living and inanimate things is that the former maintain themselves by renewal. A stone when struck resists. If its resistance is greater than the force of the blow struck, it remains outwardly unchanged. Otherwise, it is shattered into smaller bits. Never does the stone attempt to react in such a way that it may maintain itself against the blow, much less so as to render the blow a contributing factor to its own continued action. While the living thing may easily be crushed by superior force, it none the less tries to turn the energies which act upon it into means of its own further existence. If it cannot do so, it does not just split into smaller pieces (at least in the higher forms of life), but loses its identity as a living thing. As long as it endures, it struggles to use surrounding energies in its own behalf. It uses light, air, moisture, and the material of soil. To say that it uses them is to say that it turns them into means of its own conservation. As long as it is growing, the energy it expends in thus turning the environment to account is more than compensated for by the return it gets: it grows. Understanding the word "control" in this sense, it may be said that a living being is one that subjugates and controls for its own continued activity the energies that would otherwise use it up. Life is a self-renewing process through action upon the environment.

Book excerpt: Aristotle's "Nicomachean Ethics" is considered to be one of the most important treatises on ethics ever written. In an incredibly detailed study of virtue and vice in man, Aristotle examines one of the most central themes to man, the nature of goodness itself. In Aristotle's "Nicomachean Ethics," he asserts that virtue is essential to happiness and that man must live in accordance with the "doctrine of the mean" (the balance between excess and deficiency) to achieve such happiness.
