Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Camosun, Vol. 7: February, 1915 You may understand from this how anxious I was to the young ideal in the question of valentines; but what was my dismay to discover on February the thirteenth, that all I possessed of my last week's pay was one dollar; with this I had to supply my meals for the remainder of the week, and - that fatal valentine. My heart palpitating with nervous excitement, I approached the book - store, entered, and demanded to see some valentines. We can safely promise Vancouver a very interesting reception and of course, 'what We Have We'll Hold. On November 18 we held a lottery meeting which came as rather a surprise, especially to our silent members. Gentlemen of gigantic proportions guarded all possible means of exit which a hat was passed around, each member extracting therefrom the subject on which he was to speak. Many Of the topics were quite humorous as well as instructive, such as. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. With one bound he siezes the brute by the throat and after a long struggle he strangles the beast. A band of native fishermen appear and take them off in their small craft. Book excerpt: British Columbia inherited a legal system that granted married men control over most family property and imposed few obligations on them toward their wives and children. Yet from the 1860s onward, lawmakers throughout the Anglo-American world, including legislators on the Pacific Coast, began to grant women and children new rights. Domestic Reforms deftly analyzes the impact of the legislation, with emphasis on the ambitions of regulated populations, the influence of the judiciary, and the social and fiscal concerns of generations of legislators and bureaucrats.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In August 1914, Canada found itself jolted from its splendid isolation by the onrush of a European catastrophe. In Victoria, British Columbia, five hundred youth who had been educated at Victoria High School went to war and were forever changed by the experience. From Classroom to Battlefield follows the experiences of this cohort through the Second Battle of Ypres, when Canadians suffered terribly from the German use of poison gas; the horrors of the Somme, Vimy Ridge, Passchendaele, and Amiens; and, at last, victory at Mons. It weaves Victoria High School’s idealistic hopes into the realities of the pain, suffering, and death in faraway fields of fire, while examining legacies of the conflict at home. This is a poignant book about war, memory, and sacrifice from one of Canada’s preeminent writers of historical nonfiction.

It publishes essays on the life, times, and interests of Aldous Huxley and his circle. It aspires to be the sort of periodical that Huxley would have wanted to read and to which he might have contributed. This issue is dedicated to Prof Peter Edgerly Firchow (18 October 2008) in appreciation of his merits as an outstanding Huxley scholar and as a Founding Member and Curator of the Aldous Huxley Society. It opens with Prof Firchow's keynote lecture at the Fourth International Aldous Huxley Symposium in Los Angeles in July 2008 and then presents a rich anthology of Huxley's uncollected prose from 1919 to 1963, edited by James Sexton. Two more lectures from the Los Angeles Symposium close this issue, one on death in Lawrence's and Huxley's fiction, and the other on Erwin Schrodinger's and Huxley's views on the final end of human life.
