Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Two histories of the University of Toronto have been published, one in 1906 and one in 1927. Since the latter volume appeared, no comprehensive history of the University has been published. Given the size of the University and the complexity of the task, this is not entirely surprising. But, after sixty-six years, this gap in the intellectual history of Canada has been filled, and we are delighted to announce publication, in March of 2002, of Martin Friedland’s new history of one of Canada’s most important educational and cultural institutions. The author of several books on legal history, Professor Friedland brings to this task an accomplished eye and ear and a status as a long time member of the University community. Professor Friedland’s text is accompanied by over 200 maps, drawings and photographs. Published to coincide with the University’s 175th anniversary, The University of Toronto: A History tells the story of the university in the context of the history of the nation of which it is a part, weaving the stories of the people who have been a part of this institution – people who make up a who’s who in the history of Canada. Anyone who attended the University or who is interested in the growth of Canada’s intellectual heritage will enjoy this compelling and magisterial history.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Interpreting the path of the future is made easier by understanding the past. In light of this adage, Capitalizing Knowledge examines the history of Canadian business faculties in their search for professional legitimacy. As the title suggests, this volume is an overview of the development of business schools in Canadian universities. Business faculties have different characteristics; some are noted for generating management research, while others generate interaction with the business community. Some programs are famous for their MBA graduates, others for their undergraduate students. This collection of essays describes the critical events that have defined the character of these faculties and societies of business education in Canada over the course of the twentieth century. Eight universities are profiled, including Queen's, York, and the University of Toronto. In addition, the development of the Administrative Sciences Association of Canada (ASAC) is traced. The first book of its kind, Capitalizing Knowledge contains original research by some of the leading Canadian business school academics, who describe how these programs have evolved. The contributors all note the particular importance of organization culture and values in moulding the actions of faculty members. They also highlight the difficulties associated with establishing a body of knowledge in business management and transforming that knowledge to suit ever-changing business organizations and industry at large.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The University of Toronto’s Faculty of Arts and Science is older than the university itself. Chartered in 1827 as King’s College, it officially opened in 1843 with four professors and twenty-seven students. In this lively and engaging book, Robert Craig Brown vividly recounts the 150-year history of the faculty’s staff, students, and achievements. Brown takes readers on a sweeping journey though the development and growth of the faculty through wartime and peace, depression and prosperity. He covers teaching and research in the vast array of subjects offered, administrative and financial concerns, and the Faculty’s significant contributions to higher education in Canada. Throughout, Brown traces how the faculty evolved past its early defining traits of elitism and exclusivity to its current form – a remarkably diverse body with students of all ages, backgrounds, and academic interests.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An accessible account of the role of the modern university in the creation of economics During the late nineteenth century concerns about international commercial rivalry were often expressed in terms of national provision for training and education, and the role of universities in such provision. It was in this context that the modern university discipline of economics emerged. The first undergraduate economics program was inaugurated in Cambridge in 1903; but this was merely a starting point. Constructing Economic Science charts the path through commercial education to the discipline of economics and the creation of an economics curriculum that could then be replicated around the world. Rather than describing this transition epistemologically, as a process of theoretical creation, Keith Tribe shows how the new "science" of economics was primarily an institutional creation of the modern university. He demonstrates how finance, student numbers, curricula, teaching, new media, the demands of employment, and more broadly, the international perception that industrializing economies required a technically-skilled workforce, all played their part in shaping economics as we know it today. This study explains the conditions originally shaping the science of economics, providing in turn a foundation for an understanding of the way in which this new language transformed public policy.
