Book excerpt: "The study's intention is to share the 200 year story of Kansas' Bukovina-Germans, providing a basis upon which today's Bukovina- Germans can come to understand and appreciate a heritage that has remained largely ignored... Although they have been able to preserve their unique identity to date, their story has not been recorded and is in danger of being lost. The heritage and history of this group needs to be preserved"--Introd.

Book excerpt: In this work, Bruce Brandt and his father, Edward, furnish us with the surname of every German-speaking individual who appears in thirteen authoritative histories--eleven of them written in German--that document the massive emigration of Germanic individuals to Eastern Europe. In all, this work lists 19,720 surnames of German-speaking ancestors who emigrated to Russia, Poland, Romania, and elsewhere in Eastern Europe. In the introductory chapters to the book the authors provide an extremely informative history of German settlement in Eastern Europe and detailed summaries of each of their sources.

Book excerpt: This work focuses on the Catholic Bohemian German dialect of Ellis County, Kansas, in the United States. It is a unique Bavarian dialect spoken by descendants of settlers to this area in west central Kansas from Bukovina, then an Austrian province. The Catholic Bohemian Germans were one of two distinct groups of Bukovina immigrants to the Ellis area as early as the 1880s. They found their way to the United States and Kansas via Bukovina from the Bohemian Forest, today situated in the Czech Republic. Their German dialect faces its linguistic demise. This study documents the grammar and the lexicon of the Catholic Bohemian German dialect, based on dialect interviews. In addition it sheds light on its geographical origin in the Bohemian Forest.

Book excerpt: From the Neumark, from Bohemia, from Galicia, from the Danube, from Transylvania and from different regions of the Russian Empire came a large number of emigrants who, at the turn of the 19th to the 20th century, sought a better life overseas. In order to escape poverty, unemployment, land shortages, religious or political persecution in their homeland, many German-speaking inhabitants of these areas also set out to America, Australia, New Zealand, South America and Canada. The contributions in this volume trace their emigration figures and also the economic, cultural and political phenomena that the emigrants brought with them. With contributions by Ingrid Bertleff, Wolfgang Grams, Wilfried Heller, Klaus Hödl, Göz Kaufmann, Anitta Maksymowicz, Jochen Oltmer, Halrun Reinholz, Harald Roth, Eric J. Schmalz and Tobias Weger. With duotone illustrations, detailed registers and maps.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores how 15 immigrants from German-speaking Switzerland in Australia make sense of their migratory experience, of building a new life in a different language. It does so by examining their written and oral life stories. The analysis takes two complementary perspectives: Firstly, the construction of language identities is studied through the language practices and attitudes discussed and displayed by the participants. Secondly, the ways in which they create coherence in their life stories focuses on autobiographical identities where language is a medium of sense-making across their life course. The combined perspectives highlight the diversity among the participants and the complexities of language and identity construction in the context of migration.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This comprehensive encyclopedia details the close ties between the German-speaking world and the Americas, examining the extensive Germanic cultural and political legacy in the nations of the New World and the equally substantial influence of the Americas on the Germanic nations. From the medical discoveries of Dr. Johann Siegert, surgeon general to Simon Bolivar, to the amazing explorations of the early-19th-century German explorer Alexander von Humboldt, whose South American and Caribbean travels made him one of the most celebrated men in Europe, Germany and the Americas examines both the profound Germanic cultural and political legacy throughout the Americas and the lasting influence of American culture on the German-speaking world. Ever since Baron von Steuben helped create George Washington's army, German Americans have exhibited decisive leadership not only in the military, but also in politics, the arts, and business. Germany and the Americas charts the lasting links between the Germanic world and the nations of the Americas in a comprehensive survey featuring a chronology of key events spanning 400 years of transatlantic history.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: German-Americans make up one of the largest ethnic groups in the United States, yet their very success at assimilating has also made them one of the least visible. Contented among Strangers examines the central role German-speaking women in rural areas of the Midwest played in preserving their ethnic and cultural identity. Even while living far from their original homelands, these women applied traditional European patterns of rural family life and values to their new homes in Illinois, Iowa, Kansas, Missouri, and Nebraska. As a result they were more content with their modest lives than were their Anglo-American counterparts. Through personal recollections--including interesting diary material translated by the author, church and community documents, and migration and census data--Pickle reveals the diversity and richness of the women's experiences.
