Book excerpt: "Summer school is in session on Ellesmere Island, and Martha, one of Edie Kiglatuk's students, is missing. When Martha's body turns up in Lake Turngaluk, Edie and her sidekick, Derek Palliser, promise the grieving family they'll deliver justice. But Martha's deeply traditional Inuit father spurns them as outsiders. Meanwhile, bullheaded lawyer Sonia Gutierrez is on her own crusade to investigate Lake Turngaluk's decades-old toxicity. Was one of the soldiers stationed near the lake involved in Martha's murder? Or is a larger conspiracy afoot--one involving the Canadian government? Edie, Sonia, and Derek clamber over the rocky Arctic terrain under the twenty-four-hour summer sun to find Martha's killer, but not without risking their own lives in the pursuit."--Back cover.

Book excerpt: Summer in the High Arctic. When young Inuit Martha Salliaq goes missing from her settlement, her teacher, ex Polar Bear Hunter Edie Kiglatuk enlists her police friend Derek Palliser to help search for the girl. But once a body is discovered floating in a polluted lake on the site of a decommissioned Radar Station, Edie's worst fears are realised. As the investigation into Martha's murder begins, the Inuit community - and Martha's devastated family - are convinced the culprits lie within the encampment of soldiers stationed nearby. Before long Sergeant Palliser finds evidence linking two of the men with the dead girl. But Edie and local lawyer Sonia Gutierrez remain unconvinced. Why are the military quite so willing to cooperate with the investigation? What has Edie's boyfriend Chip Muloon, a simple academic researcher, got to hide? And why has the lake where Martha's body was found been suddenly cordoned off? A gripping, atmospheric thriller set in the Arctic's long white nights, in The Bone Seeker the very personal murder of a young girl will explode a decades-long tale of the very darkest betrayal.

Book excerpt: This book describes hazards from radon progeny and other alpha-emitters that humans may inhale or ingest from their environment. In their analysis, the authors summarize in one document clinical and epidemiological evidence, the results of animal studies, research on alpha-particle damage at the cellular level, metabolic pathways for internal alpha-emitters, dosimetry and microdosimetry of radionuclides deposited in specific tissues, and the chemical toxicity of some low-specific-activity alpha-emitters. Techniques for estimating the risks to humans posed by radon and other internally deposited alpha-emitters are offered, along with a discussion of formulas, models, methods, and the level of uncertainty inherent in the risk estimates.

Book excerpt: This highly successful manual has served for nearly three decades as the definitive guide to the safe use of radioactive materials. Completely revised and updated, the fourth edition presents a new dimension by adding coverage of nonionizing radiation, and is thus concerned with the entire field of radiation protection. The author takes the novel approach of introducing the whole range of energies possessed by particles and electromagnetic waves at the beginning of the text, thus integrating coverage of ionizing and nonionizing radiation rather than considering them as two separate disciplines. He goes on to cover the entire spectrum of radiation sources, including radionuclides, x-ray machines, accelerators, nuclear reactors, power lines, microwave towers, and cellular phones. With its expanded coverage, including a broader focus on public health issues, this new volume will serve as an important training and reference resource, not only for research scientists, physicians, and engineers, but for regulatory officials, attorneys, engineers, and environmental health and safety professionals. The breadth of citations alone makes this resource invaluable.

This book was released on 2022-02-08 with total page 317 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mathematical modelling is an important part of nuclear medicine. Therefore, several chapters of this book have been dedicated towards describing this topic. In these chapters, an emphasis has been put on describing the mathematical modelling of the radiation transport of photons and electrons, as well as on the transportation of radiopharmaceuticals between different organs and compartments. It also includes computer models of patient dosimetry. Two chapters of this book are devoted towards introducing the concept of biostatistics and radiobiology. These chapters are followed by chapters detailing dosimetry procedures commonly used in the context of diagnostic imaging, as well as patient-specific dosimetry for radiotherapy treatments. For safety reasons, many of the methods used in nuclear medicine and molecular imaging are tightly regulated. Therefore, this volume also highlights the basic principles for radiation protection. It discusses the process of how guidelines and regulations aimed at minimizing radiation exposure are determined and implemented by international organisations. Finally, this book describes how different dosimetry methods may be utilized depending on the intended target, including whole-body or organ-specific imaging, as well as small-scale to cellular dosimetry. This text will be an invaluable resource for libraries, institutions, and clinical and academic medical physicists searching for a complete account of what defines nuclear medicine. The most comprehensive reference available providing a state-of-the-art overview of the field of nuclear medicine Edited by a leader in the field, with contributions from a team of experienced medical physicists, chemists, engineers, scientists, and clinical medical personnel Includes the latest practical research in the field, in addition to explaining fundamental theory and the field's history

Book excerpt: The last three decades have provided opportunities to explore the potential of treating malignant diseases with antibodies or other targeting molecules labelled with nuclides. While considerable advances have been reported, there is still a signi- cant amount of work left to accomplish before our ambitions can be achieved. It now seems timely to review the accomplishments achieved to date and to clarify the challenges that remain. The choice of radionuclide, the conjugation p- cedure employed, and the selection of suitable targets were early issues that were faced by our field that still persist, however we can now tackle these obstacles with significantly better insight. The expanding array of new targeting molecules (recombinant antibodies, peptides and agents based upon alternate scaffolds) may increase the therapeutic efficacy or even modify the radiation sensitivity of the targeted tumor cell. The title of this book “Targeted Radionuclide Tumour Therapy – Biological Aspects” was selected to reinforce the concept that a major focus of this volume was devoted to understanding the biological effects of targeting and radiation. These important issues have not previously been the primary focus in this context. Furthermore, our rapidly expanding knowledge of different types of cell death and the increasingly likely existence of cancer stem cells suggests to us that even more efficient approaches in targeting might be possible in the future.

Book excerpt: In 1980 the Internal Emitters Committee of EULEP organised a symposium in Rotterdam on Bone and Bone Seeking Radionu cI ides: Their Physiology, Dosimetry and Effects. The speakers for this meeting, mostly from EULEP associ ated laboratories, were chosen to review this field of scientific research mostly for the benefit of interested scientists who were not actively researching with bone seeking radionuclides. This meeting was a success and its proceedings were subsequently published in the form of a book by the Commission of the European Communities, reflecting the great importance that both EULEP and the Radiologi cal Protection Programme of the Commission of the European Communities attaches to the study of radionuclides that deposit in bone. The Metals in Bone symposium in Angers was intended to serve a different function from that of the meeting held in Rotterdam in that, while these proceed ings will certainly be of interest to non-involved scientists, the meeting was intended to be of most benefit to those actively researching the metabolism and effects of bone-seeking metals. Moreover, in an attempt to increase the value of its discussions and the number of interested and participating scientists, the remit of the meeting was broader and set to include papers on stable as well as radioactive metals.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Biological Effects of Radiation, Second Edition aims to present an organized survey of the various experiments wherein living materials have been exposed to ionizing and exciting types of radiations. However, this book focuses on the effects of radiation to lower organisms, as these have received less attention. It tells how small amount of energy can damage submicroscopic structure and ultimately alter the appearance and abilities of such organisms. Divided into five parts, this book starts off with two introductory chapters in the first part. It explains the effects of radiation. Then, other parts of the book focus on the impact of radiation from cellular to organ level. How the lower organisms response is then discussed. Lastly, the book explains the interrelations between organisms in contaminated areas. Same with the first edition, emphasis is given on the consequences of mutations, as a whole chapter is devoted to this topic. Furthermore, this book covers discoveries from experiments with cultured cells. This book is a good text-reference for students and professionals. Also, it can be of great help to scientists, researchers, and specialists involved in the biological response to radiation.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Radioisotopes in the Human Body: Physical and Biological Aspects provides a unified presentation of the manner in which radioisotopes are deposited in the human body. This book focuses on bone structure and the irradiation of bone because so many of the available radioisotopes are deposited in bone. Organized into nine chapters, this book begins with an overview of the physical considerations that are significant to the dosimetry of internally deposited radioisotopes. This text then examines the structure and formation of bone in some detail. Other chapters consider the importance of bone in relation to potential radiation damage. This book discusses as well the relationship between radiation dose and radiobiological effects. The final chapter deals with the case of internal irradiation by radioisotopes. This book is a valuable resource for biologists, health physicists, scientists, and students. Radiation protection officers and individuals who have responsibilities for the safe use of radioactive substances will also find this book useful.
