Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: REPRODUCTION FROM THE STANDPOINT OF BIOLOGY. I. GENERAL ACTIVITIES OF LIVING ORGANISMS. The casual observer, even if he watches thoughtfully the various activities of plants and animals, would hardly believe these activities capable of classification into two general classes. He notes the germination of the plant seed and its early growth, step by step approaching a stage of maturity; it blossoms, produces seed, and if it is an annual plant, withers and dies. If it is a perennial plant its leaves only, wither and die at the approach of winter, the plant passing into a resting stage from which it awakes the following spring to repeat again its annual cycle. If he observes an animal he finds that it similarly develops to a stage of maturity, reproduces its kind, withers and dies; but incident to these general activities he notes numerous others that seem to have no relation to the activity of the plant. He sees men tilling the fields, felling the forests, building houses, factories and railroads; he sees them build hospitals, colleges and churches. Is it possible to group all of these activities of plants and animals into two general groups? A more critical view of these activities makes it evident that they are all directed either to the maintenance and protection of the individual, or the maintenance and protection of the race. Those directed towards the maintenance of self are called egoistic activities, while those directed to the maintenance of the race are called phyletic activities.

Hallc. =Support and Protection of Weaker Members of Society.=--Young animals are supported and protected because they are unable to support and protect themselves. If they were not thus cared for the race would become extinct. Now, there are certain individuals, orphans for example, who have, through some accident, been deprived of their natural support and protection. If these weaker members of society, not yet able to support and protect themselves, were not provided for, they would perish and become thus lost to the race. From the time of primeval man to the present, these weaker individuals of society who have been deprived of their natural protectors, have been cared for by the stronger members of society and afforded such support and protection as they may need to make them independent. In a similar way the sick and defective members of society are cared for by the strong. Thus

Book excerpt: Analyzing Winfield Scott Hall's "The Biology, Physiology and Sociology of Reproduction," particularly given its historical context and also the advancements in relevant fields since its publication, entails considering different aspects: Scientific Content and Approach: Biology as well as Physiology: Hall examines the physiological and biological factors of reproduced sex, concentrating on the early twentieth century knowledge. Understand reproductive organs, sexual health, the fundamental principles of heredity. However advancements in genetics, molecule biology and reproductive technology would have made this information basic or obsolete. Male-Centric View: The book devotes particular attention to male sexual hygiene and health because of the medical and societal emphasis of the era. The contemporary science stresses a balanced approach to reproductive health for both genders. The Sociological Perspective: Cultural and Ethical Views: Hall consists of ethical and sociological discussions in his analysis, echoing the norms as well as values of the time. These include concepts regarding sexuality, morality and the social ramifications of reproduction. These viewpoints could appear dated or restricted out of a contemporary standpoint, considering the huge changes in societal attitudes to sexuality and reproductive rights. Gender Roles as well as Sexuality: The book most likely mirrors the early twentieth century gender norms and sexual ethics, which had been drastically distinct from present day acceptance and understanding of various sexual identities and identities. What's Historical Value: Educational Resource: The book is a historical account of the state of reproductive science and dominant community attitudes a century ago. It could be a crucial tool for understanding the evolution of reproductive health training. Reflection of Its Time: The book mirrors the scientific limitations and societal viewpoints of its age, which makes it an invaluable illustration of the evolution of social and medical thought. Relevance in Contemporary Context: The Comparative Study: Modern readers and researchers could use the book to compare present and past understanding and attitudes in reproductive science and sociology. Evolution of Thought: It spotlights advancements in reproductive health, gender analysis, and sociological awareness of sexualité and reproductive rights. Hall's work remains a major historical document, though it is definitely a product of its time when it comes to sociocultural perspective and scientific understanding. Additionally, it can serve as a reminder of how much society and science have advanced in understanding, beliefs and practices regarding human reproduction.

Book excerpt: The Fourth Edition of Knobil & Neill continues to serve as a reference aid for research, to provide the historical context to current research, and most importantly as an aid for graduate teaching on a broad range of topics in human and comparative reproduction. In the decade since the publication of the last edition, the study of reproductive physiology has undergone monumental changes. Chief among these advances are in the areas of stem cell development, signaling pathways, the role of inflammation in the regulatory processes in the various tissues, and the integration of new animal models which have led to a greater understanding of human disease. The new edition synthesizes all of this new information at the molecular, cellular, and organismal levels of organization and present modern physiology a more understandable and comparative context. The Fourth Edition has been extensively revised, reflecting new fundamental advancements in this rapidly advancing field. Provides a common language for researchers across the fields of physiology, endocrinology, and biology to discuss their understanding of reproduction. Saves academic researchers time in quickly accessing the very latest details on reproductive physiology, as opposed to searching through thousands of journal articles.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Reproductive issues from sex and contraception to abortion and cloning have been controversial for centuries, and scientists who attempted to turn the study of reproduction into a discipline faced an uphill struggle. Adele Clarke's engrossing story of the search for reproductive knowledge across the twentieth century is colorful and fraught with conflict. Modern scientific study of reproduction, human and animal, began in the United States in an overlapping triad of fields: biology, medicine, and agriculture. Clarke traces the complicated paths through which physiological approaches to reproduction led to endocrinological approaches, creating along the way new technoscientific products from contraceptives to hormone therapies to new modes of assisted conception—for both humans and animals. She focuses on the changing relations and often uneasy collaborations among scientists and the key social worlds most interested in their work—major philanthropists and a wide array of feminist and medical birth control and eugenics advocates—and recounts vividly how the reproductive sciences slowly acquired standing. By the 1960s, reproduction was disciplined, and the young and contested scientific enterprise proved remarkably successful at attracting private funding and support. But the controversies continue as women—the targeted consumers—create their own reproductive agendas around the world. Elucidating the deep cultural tensions that have permeated reproductive topics historically and in the present, Disciplining Reproduction gets to the heart of the twentieth century's drive to rationalize reproduction, human and nonhuman, in order to control life itself. This title is part of UC Press's Voices Revived program, which commemorates University of California Press's mission to seek out and cultivate the brightest minds and give them voice, reach, and impact. Drawing on a backlist dating to 1893, Voices Revived makes high-quality, peer-reviewed scholarship accessible once again using print-on-demand technology. This title was originally published in 1998.
