Download or read book Neuromatic written by John Lardas Modern and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2021-10-07 with total page 443 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: John Modern offers a powerful and original critique of neurology’s pivotal role in religious history. In Neuromatic, religious studies scholar John Lardas Modern offers a sprawling examination of the history of the cognitive revolution and current attempts to locate all that is human in the brain, including spirituality itself. Neuromatic is a wildly original take on the entangled histories of science and religion that lie behind our brain-laden present: from eighteenth-century revivals to the origins of neurology and mystic visions of mental piety in the nineteenth century; from cyberneticians, Scientologists, and parapsychologists in the twentieth century to contemporary claims to have discovered the neural correlates of religion. What Modern reveals via this grand tour is that our ostensibly secular turn to the brain is bound up at every turn with the religion it discounts, ignores, or actively dismisses. In foregrounding the myths, ritual schemes, and cosmic concerns that have accompanied idealizations of neural networks and inquiries into their structure, Neuromatic takes the reader on a dazzling and disturbing ride through the history of our strange subservience to the brain.
Book Synopsis Speech and Language by : Norman J. Lass
Download or read book Speech and Language written by Norman J. Lass and published by Academic Press. This book was released on 2014-06-28 with total page 326 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Speech and Language: Volume 3, Advances in Basic Research and Practice is a compendium of papers that discusses theories, clinical issues, and pathology of language and speech. Some papers discuss theories of phonological development, the encoding/decoding system of language, and the application of phonological universals in speech pathology. Other papers deal with the role of the speech-language clinician, a psychological framework for speech perception, and the formulation of a model for biomechanical analysis of velopharyngeal structure and function. Several papers analyze speech control mechanisms in skilled and non-skilled speakers, the rationale for the delayed auditory feedback (DAF) treatment program, and biofeedback in relation to speech pathology. One paper cites a study of Williams (1974) that shows strategies used in learning a new phonetic system depend upon whether the speaker is still within the critical period for language learning or already well beyond it. The paper notes that if adults can ignore their previously learned sound system and be childlike again in their freedom to experiment and be sensitivity to their own results, then they can achieve supra-segmental and segmental nuances of a new language. The compendium can prove helpful for linguists, ethnologists, psychologists, speech therapists, researchers in linguistics or communications, and general readers interested in speech or learning issues.

Book Synopsis Implementing Pastoral Care in Schools by : Jeanette Raymond
Download or read book Implementing Pastoral Care in Schools written by Jeanette Raymond and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-06-04 with total page 216 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: All schoolteachers are involved in pastoral care, either in their roles as form teachers or year tutors or more generally in their everyday contact with children. Pastoral care is a wide ranging area which involves amongst other things the building in children of social skills and a positive self-image in order to help them be well-motivated contributors to school life and to wider society. It also involves helping children cope with the stress of everyday school life, including examinations; familiarising them with school organisation; and helping children who have specific behaviour problems or personal crises. The book, originally published in 1985, surveys the whole field of pastoral care in schools at the time. It discusses the aims, methods and implementation of a successful pastoral care system. It reviews relevant theories and research work but throughout the emphasis is on practical matters, on helping teachers work out intelligently for themselves how they might improve their performance in this field.

Book Synopsis Psychotherapy Tradecraft: The Technique And Style Of Doing by : Theodore H. Blau
Download or read book Psychotherapy Tradecraft: The Technique And Style Of Doing written by Theodore H. Blau and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-01-09 with total page 324 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1988. The literature of psychotherapy is heavily weighted on the side of theory. There is an almost complete absence of tradecraft—what to do, when to do it, and how to do it. Tradecraft refers to the specific techniques used by experienced and skillful psychotherapists to create the therapeutic setting; to invite and maintain a therapeutic alliance; to enhance the patient's progress; and, finally, to allow the patient to integrate and complete the process of psychotherapy. A search of psychoanalytic literature reveals an enormous amount of theory and speculation, countertheory and counter-speculation, but little tradecraft. This book aims to fulfil that gap.
