Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Bible and Modern Thought For a man to profess beliefs which his heart and mind do not endorse is, in their eyes, akin to sacrilege and degrades and darkens the man's own soul. Hence to-day, when Bible or creed contradict verified facts of science, history, or conscience, man's heart pulls in one direction, his head in another. He feels acutely the wrench of breaking with his Old creed, but his principles forbid him to force his head to keep step with his heart when the two clash. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Biblical Criticism and Modern Thought: Or the Place of the Old Testament Documents in the Life of to-Day The author of the present volume was appointed to the Chancellor's Lectureship of Queen's University in 1906 and 1907, and delivered to the Theological Alumni Association the nine lectures which form the substance of the book. Chapter I., which now serves as an Introduction, appeared in 1901 as an article in The Biblical World (Chicago), and is reproduced by permission; Chapter XI. was read before The Philosophical Society of Queen's University in the autumn of 1906; the remaining three chapters, X., XIII., and XIV., were added to round out a little more the programme that the author had in mind. So much as to the origin of the book, now as to its plan and purpose. The title, though perhaps somewhat too general, indicates the spirit in which the work was undertaken. Considering the audience to which, in the first place, the lectures were to be addressed, it was thought advisable to attempt a general review of the Old Testament Problem. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Christianity and Modern Thought: Twelve Lectures When these lectures were being delivered the Essays and Reviews made theirappearance in England. It is surely a verysad sign of the times thata book, like that, in which nothingisfirst-rate and almost everything is secondhand should have produced a sort of religious earthquake in England. Many of the questions that are treated by the Essayists and Reviewers have occupied my attention here. If I have not made any reference to that book in these lectures, my readers will under. Stand that this arises from the simple fact that the book had not reached this part of the world when the lectures were delivered. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Modern Interpretations of the Gospel Life The New Testament is essentially a modern book. En grafted into the life and permeating the thought of the centuries as is the power of its Central Figure, the one thing that impresses the student more than all else, as he endeavors to catch the spirit of New Testament teaching, is its thor oughly modern tone. The setting is local and Oriental, but the principles and their application are universal and human. The discourses here gathered together are an attempt to select from a ministry extending over a period of ten years, most of it in a single pulpit, the ruling ideas and efforts of that ministry to present a spherical view of the application of the Christian gospel to the whole of modern life, as we live it in America. Carrying out this purpose, I have made several excursions into the region of apostolic psychology; then again, I have tried to apply the teachings of Christ to the social and political life of our time, an experiment always fruitful of danger and misunderstanding, but none the less necessary for that. I have further outlined the relations of Christianity to our educational ideas and method, especially the place of the Bible in university instruction, following this with a literary criticism or two, in which I have made some observations on the literary and dramatic portraiture of gospel ideas. Then, too, I have added a number of dis courses on the spiritual life itself, as distinguished from the various modes of it which I have been describing. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The American Bible: The Books of the Bible in Modern English IN his preface to The Epistles of Paul in Mod ern English, Professor Stevens, of Yale University says he has sought to reproduce the thought of Paul's epistles, and the kindred letter to the He brews, in the language of to-day. The terms of our English versions have purposely been avoided, so far as practicable, because their very familiarity is often a hindrance to the apprehension of the mean ing.
