Book excerpt: Glacier National Park, known as the "Crown of the Continent," is a stunningly beautiful mountain landscape adorned with glaciers and snowfields. Combined with its sister park, Waterton Lakes Park in southern Alberta, the two become Waterton-Glacier International Peace Park, the first of its kind in the world. These wild places are the realm of the grizzly and the mountain goat, along with the diminutive pika and delicate, yet exceptionally hardy, wildflowers that put on a dazzling display in the short season between the months of snow. Visitors to Glacier and Waterton have a lot of questions about the native flora and fauna, and there isn’t a ranger around every corner to answer them. Nature Guide to Glacier and Waterton National Parks will be their handy resource to quickly identify over 200 animals and plants native to the parks. Conveniently sized to fit in a pocket, look inside for full-color images, detailed descriptions, useful park information, and much more as you explore the unique wildlife and nature of Glacier and Waterton Lakes National Parks.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Bristol takes readers on a journey through the history of Glacier National Park, beginning over a billion years ago from the formation of the Belt Sea, to the present day climate-changing extinction of the very glaciers that sculpted most of the wonders of its landscapes. He delves into the ways in which this area of Montana seemed to have been preparing itself for the coming of humankind through a series of landmass adjustments like the Lewis Overthrust and the ice ages that came and went. First there were tribes of Native Americans whose deep regard for nature left the landscape intact. They were followed by Euro-American explorers and settlers who may have been awed by the new lands, but began to move wildlife to near extinction. Fortunately for the area that would become Glacier, some began to recognize that laying siege to nature and its bounties would lead to wastelands. Bristol recounts how a renewed conservation ethic fostered by such leaders as Emerson, Thoreau, Olmstead, Muir, and Teddy Roosevelt took hold. Their disciples were Grinnell, Hill, Mather, Albright, and Franklin Roosevelt, and they would not only take up the call but rally for the cause. These giants would create and preserve a park landscape to accommodate visitors and wilderness alike.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Historic Glacier National Park captures the most interesting moments in the park’s history, the slices of life in northwestern Montana that provide an idea of what life was like for those who chose to explore this gloriously beautiful snowy corner of the United States. There’s the presence of Native Americans in nearly every aspect of the park’s history, the significant influence of the Great Northern Railway as a leader as the park gained its footing, and people who made history in this astonishing Rocky Mountain landscape. Once Congress decided to make Glacier a national park, developers created hotels, chalets, campgrounds, residences, and the most spectacularly scenic road in the United States. Historic Glacier National Park provides just enough of this rich history to make the experience of visiting the park better than expected.

This book illustrates the park's evolution, from the Great Northern Railroad days, Native American presence, lodges, chalets, and camps, to majestic scenery and wildlife--all in vintage postcards. The opening of Glacier National Park coincided with the popularity of postcards across the nation, and hence this visual documentation of Glacier's many wonders is thorough and encompassing. With the celebration of its centennial in 2010, Glacier National Park continues to provide us with one of the last best places to visit.

Book excerpt: With this guide in hand, families won’t risk having their “Going-to-the-Sun” drive end up feeling more like “Going-to-the-Dark-Side” with grumpy, bored children. Instead they’ll be able to keep the whole family happy and ready for adventure! • Fun for all ages in one of America’s most stunning parks • Easy-to-follow organization based on park’s geography • Kid-tested hikes, historic and natural sights, wildlife viewing, boating opportunities, and more • Information on the Junior Ranger program found throughout the National Parks Service system • “Best Bets” and “Top Five Tips” gets everyone out of the car and into the park • 3-, 5-, and 7-day recommended itineraries make vacation planning a breeze With an emphasis on outdoor education and fun and an approach that zeroes in on the best options for families, Glacier National Park: Adventuring with Kids is a great resource for parents and kids alike. The McAllisters have a refreshingly honest approach—they acknowledge that kids aren’t going to be excited about views and that, just like adults, little ones and teenagers get cranky when they’re cold or hungry. Parents will feel confident that the adventures they recommend are sure to please.
