Book excerpt: In September of 1943, Nazi occupiers are holding Princess Aleksandra, cousin of the exiled Yugoslav King, in so-called protective custody at Miramar Castle, overlooking the Adriatic Sea. Seeing the potential for some positive propaganda, the Germans grant permission for Life magazine to produce a photo spread of the glamorous young royal for an upcoming issue. But her captors appear unaware that she possesses a scientific document whose contents could change the course of the war. Posing as the magazine's Irish photographer, MI6 agent Drex Ellis goes to German-occupied Trieste to retrieve the crucial documents from the young Princess. She agrees to comply, provided that Drex help her escape from both Miramar Castle and Nazi occupied Yugoslavia.Drex and the Princess escape by horseback to the countryside, where Balkan resistance groups are stepping up attacks on the occupying forces, prompting horrific reprisals against Yugoslav civilians. Joining forces with British commandos, the two launch a scheme to prevent hundreds of innocent villagers from being executed by Nazi soldiers, a scheme involving the famous Lipizzaners, Europe's oldest breed of horses.Drex's mission to prevent the secret papers from falling into enemy hands takes him and the Princess to Geneva, where the treachery of false friends leads to a deadly encounter.

Download or read book The Oxford Encyclopedia of Women in World History written by Bonnie G. Smith and published by . This book was released on 2008 with total page 2710 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Encyclopedia of Women in World History captures the experiences of women throughout world history in a comprehensive, 4-volume work. Although there has been extensive research on women in history by region, no text or reference work has comprehensively covered the role women have played throughout world history. The past thirty years have seen an explosion of research and effort to present the experiences and contributions of women not only in the Western world but across the globe. Historians have investigated womens daily lives in virtually every region and have researched the leadership roles women have filled across time and region. They have found and demonstrated that there is virtually no historical, social, or demographic change in which women have not been involved and by which their lives have not been affected. The Oxford Encyclopedia of Women in World History benefits greatly from these efforts and experiences, and illuminates how women worldwide have influenced and been influenced by these historical, social, and demographic changes. The Encyclopedia contains over 1,250 signed articles arranged in an A-Z format for ease of use. The entries cover six main areas: biographies; geography and history; comparative culture and society, including adoption, abortion, performing arts; organizations and movements, such as the Egyptian Uprising, and the Paris Commune; womens and gender studies; and topics in world history that include slave trade, globalization, and disease. With its rich and insightful entries by leading scholars and experts, this reference work is sure to be a valued, go-to resource for scholars, college and high school students, and general readers alike.
Book Synopsis The British and the Balkans by : Eugene Michail
Download or read book The British and the Balkans written by Eugene Michail and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2011-08-18 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ever since the end of the Cold War the Balkans have preoccupied European public opinion much more than any other region of the old Eastern bloc. To a large extent this is a result of the wars following the break-up of Yugoslavia. The conflicts of the 1990s raised a series of questions about the nature of Balkan history as compared to an assumed European norm. Even more, they triggered prolonged discussions on the form and timing of foreign engagement in the region, both during the war, and ahead of the eastward expansion of the European Union. These public debates underlay the emergence of a related academic interest in intercultural contacts between the Balkans and the rest of Europe over the last three centuries. The British and the Balkans is a close study of the history of the image of the Balkans in Britain in the first half of the 20th century, and of the channels through which this image was built. It proposes new interpretative models for broader research in the formation of public images of foreign lands.
