Book excerpt: Parley Parker Pratt, Sr. (1807-1857) was an early leader of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He was baptized in September 1830 and a few weeks later baptized his brother Orson; the two were among the first members of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles called in 1835.Pratt was an indefatigable missionary. He helped open up missionary work in England and the Pacific Isles. A staunch defender of plural marriage, he was murdered in 1857 by the ex-husband of one of his plural wives. Pratt's writings include The Voice of Warning and The Key to the Science of Theology, which remained standard expositions of LDS doctrine through the 20th century. Numerous hymns in the current LDS hymnal were penned by Pratt, and his Autobiography, completed shortly before his murder, is an important source of information on early LDS history as well as an entertaining account of the life of a remarkable man. This book is in the Deseret Alphabet, a phonetic alphabet for writing English developed in the mid-19th century at the University of Deseret (now the University of Utah).

Pratt's memoirs impress with their vivid and eventful accounts of the author's life. Foremost however is the author's supreme devotion to the Mormon church and the Lord God. Pratt begins by reminiscing on his youth. The early 19th century was an exciting but dangerous time to be alive; the United States was a fledgling nation, and its westward expansion was fraught with a variety of dangers and hardships. Some trusted only in what they believed they knew, but Pratt placed his trust in Jesus Christ's principles from an early age and was in youth part of the Baptist movement. However, he felt he could go further in God's name, and this led him to Joseph Smith and the Mormon church. As one of the earliest members of the Latter Day Saints, Pratt enjoyed a good degree of influence at the forefront of the church's activity. He was present as the denomination grew from its roots as a small, regional group of frontier settlers to a national and international creed with its base in Utah. His part in the growth and spread of the Mormon movement was decisive: the energy with which he undertook missions to New York, Canada, and later in Europe and South America inspired many. Pratt details his active assistance in the effort to grow and spread the message of the Latter Day Saints. He traveled to the United Kingdom to deliver lectures on subjects of Mormonism, and was met with a generally warm reception. An active author, he wrote many books and lectures on Mormon topics, the publication of which spread word of the faith far and wide. This autobiography, published a few years after Pratt's death, remains his best-regarded and most enduring work.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Parley P. Pratt, born April 12, 1807, was one of the important early leaders of the LDS church. His influence is felt not only through his work as one of the first apostles called in this dispensation, but also through his missionary work, writing, poems, and hymns. After being baptized around September 1, 1830 by Oliver Cowdery, he was soon called on a mission by the prophet Joseph Smith. This was the first of many such missions that Pratt served. He was a member of Zion’s Camp and served as a missionary in Canada, the southern United States, and the United Kingdom. This book gives his history in his own words. The testimonies Pratt shares of the Gospel, particularly of the Book of Mormon, are inspiring. We hope this book and the amazing experiences of Parley P. Pratt’s life will serve to strengthen the testimonies of all who read it.

Book excerpt: This special edition of the Lectures on Faith from Zion’s Camp Books is formatted for convenience on an eReader, with more than 100 internal links to scriptures and citations. We hope it will give you a great reading experience! The Lectures on Faith were originally prepared as materials for the School of the Prophets in Kirtland, Ohio in 1834 and were included in the Doctrine and Covenants from 1835 to 1921. Although the Lectures on Faith have never been accepted as revelation by the body of the church (and so were removed from the Doctrine and Covenants in 1921), they contain important doctrinal insights that can help anyone seeking to learn more about faith and come closer to Heavenly Father and Jesus Christ. President Joseph Fielding Smith noted, “I suppose that the rising generation knows little about the Lectures on Faith. . . . In my own judgment, these Lectures are of great value and should be studied. . . . I consider them to be of extreme value in the study of the gospel of Jesus Christ.” (Joseph Fielding Smith, Seek Ye Earnestly. Salt Lake City: Deseret Book, 1970.) Elder Bruce R. McConkie of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles has stated the lectures contain “some of the best lesson material ever prepared on the Godhead; on the character, perfections, and attributes of God; on faith, miracles, and sacrifice. They can be studied with great profit by all gospel scholars.” (Bruce R. McConkie, Mormon Doctrine. Salt Lake City: Bookcraft, 1966.)

Book excerpt: A biography of Mormon convert George D. Watt, whose contributions to Mormon literature include the creation of the Deseret Alphabet and his efficient note taking that allowed him to take down the sermons of Young and other church leaders and publish them in the "Journal of Discourses," an indispensable historical record. Despite his accomplishments, because of his potential, George Watt's story is at heart a tragedy. His breach with Brigham Young resulted in social isolation, poverty, and rejection by friends and associates.

Book excerpt: John Taylor (1808-1887) was an English religious leader who served as the third president of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints from 1880 to 1887. He is the only president of the LDS Church to have been born outside of the United States. Taylor was converted by Parley P. Pratt on a mission to Toronto in 1836 and became an Apostle two years later. He spent much of his presidency evading arrest on charges of "unlawful cohabitation" and died while still in hiding. Mediation and Atonement (1882) is one of the few works of theology written by a sitting President of the LDS Church. It serves as Taylor's of the preeminent role of the Son of God in the salvation of humankind; in it, he assembles scriptural passages pertaining to Christ's Atonement and offers a commentary on their meaning. This book is in the Deseret Alphabet, a phonetic alphabet for writing English developed in the mid-19th century at the University of Deseret (now the University of Utah).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Mormons had just arrived in Utah after their 1,300-mile exodus across the Great Plains and over the Rocky Mountains. Food was scarce, the climate shocking in its extremes, and local Indian bands uneasy. Despite the challenges, Brigham Young and his counselors in the First Presidency sent church members out to establish footholds throughout the Great Basin. But the church leaders felt they had a commission to do more than simply establish Zion in the wilderness; they had to invite the nations to come up to "the mountain of the Lord's house." In these critical early years, when survival in Utah was precarious, missionaries were sent to every inhabited continent. The 14 general epistles, sent out from the First Presidency from 1849 to 1856, provide invaluable perspectives on the events of Mormon history as they unfolded during this complex transitional time. Woven into each epistle are missionary calls and reports from the field, giving the Mormons a glimpse of the wider world far beyond their isolated home. At times, the epistles are a surprising mixture of soaring doctrinal expositions and mundane lists of items needed in Salt Lake City, such as shoe leather and nails. Settling the Valley, Proclaiming the Gospel collects the 14 general epistles, with introductions that provide historical, religious, and environmental contexts for the letters, including how they fit into the Christian epistolary tradition by which they were inspired.
