Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume includes 62 colour illustrations and details the use of the Waratah motif in Australian arcitecture and decorative arts. Baker argues that the Waratah motif had figured in almost all of the local branches of the liberal arts and sciences since the Colony's foundation (ie 1788) to his times. In the spirit of Lucien Henry he offered this study as 'a contribution towards the foundation of a National School of Australian Applied Art & Design' so that design students would study the local flora as a source of inspiration. He discusses the various types of NSW, Victorian and Tasmanian waratahs and shows their application in the local architecture, bookbindings, ceramics, enamel tiles, electrical fittings, glassware, horolog, ironwork, lace, modelling, silverware, wallpapers, dados, friezes, windows and woodcarvings. He concludes with articles and legends about the waratah.

Book excerpt: The Museum of Applied Arts and Sciences in Sydney maintains a fascinating collection of early twentieth century applied art objects decorated with Australian wild flowers. The collection reflects the passionate preoccupation of its originator, former Museum curator and botanist, R.T. Baker, with the use of native floras as motifs for design in art, craft and industry. "Australian Flora Applied to Art" began as an exhibition in 1906 in the Technological Museum (the Museum changed its name to the Museum of Applied Arts and Sciences in 1961) largely as a result of Baker's interest in the subject. A selection from the Museum's collection is presented in this book.

Book excerpt: Be it a single delicate bud in a simple clear vase or an explosion of colorful blossoms, a brilliant bouquet accents an atmosphere and brightens the mood like nothing else. The beauty of flowers has inspired artists, designers, poets, and myriad other creators for centuries: the Dutch masters of the 1600s and impressionist painters from Manet to Van Gogh, photographer Robert Mapplethorpe, botanical illustrator Georg Dionysius Ehret, even the inimitable Andy Warhol. Flowers: Art & Bouquets showcases a glorious profusion of floral images and interpretations across a spectrum of artistic media and time periods. Design writer Sixtine Dubly chronicles the evolution of floral design in this remarkable compendium, which also features stunning work by more than forty contemporary floral artists in London, Paris, and New York, from minimalist to elaborate. This treasury of gorgeous imagery blooms in resplendent color before the reader’s eyes.

This book was released on 2016-08-31 with total page 198 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Iconography of Australian Species of Acacia and Cognate Genera Through the liberality of the Victorian Government it became possible, to prepare in the Phytologic Department of Melbourne successively several volumes, illustrative of some portions of the Australian Flora. Thus in earlier years appeared a series of lithograms in elucidation mainly of orders and genera of Victorian plants; in later years an almost complete iconography of the Eucalypts of Australia became elaborated, and this was followed quite recently by an Atlas of Myoporinous plants. In a desire of continuing these pictorial issues it was deemed best, to devote the next volume to those native species of Acacia, of which hitherto no drawings had appeared anywhere. As the genus Acacia is by far the largest in the Flora of this part of the globe, numbering more than 300 well-marked specific forms, hardly one-third of them hitherto illustrated anywhere, much difficulty was experienced by horticulturists and artisans, here as well as abroad, to identify with systematic accuracy any particular kinds of these plants, either cultivated for ornamental purposes or drawn into use for technic objects, so that a work like the present one seemed specially called for. Moreover it appeared likely, that by offering additional means for naming any of the numerous Acacias of ours now known, they might become restored in European Conservatories to that favor, which they enjoyed so much in the earlier part of this century, when they were largely reared as the first harbingers of the spring, and were the objects of much admiration and delight for the profuseness of their owering or for the oddity of their fantastic foliage. Since then various of the arborescent Acacias of Australia have attracted forestral attention very widely also in countries with mild climes on account of the celerity of their growth, or the technic importance of their wood, or the great value of their bark for the tanning industry, or the copious yield of mimosa-gum, so that this vast genus of plants is now surrounded by a multifarious practical interest, alien to it when but comparatively few of the species were known and the significance of many for technology remained unascertained. Indeed it may be readily foreseen, that through a publication, such as the present one, various branches of applied workmanship, including that of the seeds-trade, will become promoted or benefited.
