Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Australian Abroad: Branches From the Main Routes Round the World The following notes of travel are the outcome of a long holiday taken by an Anglo-Australian, who, after twenty-five years of active occupation in Melbourne, was enabled to indulge his long-cherished desire of making a tour of the globe. Without companions, save those whom he found by the way, and unassisted by guide-books, he travelled through most of the principal countries in each of the worlds five divisions, and recorded the impressions made upon his mind by all that he saw and heard while they were still fresh. The chapters in their present shape were actually written in the localities which they describe, and thence posted to a newspaper in Melbourne. In the columns of the Argus they have appeared at regular intervals during the last three years. Thus written, the Author ventures to think that they convey a more faithful description of the scenes and people visited than if they had been subsequently elaborated from the rough material of a diary, assisted by reference to the works of other travellers. The kindly welcome eagerly accorded to them in their serial form by his fellow-colonists has induced him to offer them collectively to the acceptance of a larger public at home. Book Synopsis Australian Foreign Policy by : Michael O'Keefe
Download or read book Australian Foreign Policy written by Michael O'Keefe and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2023-08-10 with total page 425 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How does Australia's unique geographical, cultural and historical position influence its approach to foreign policy? What key challenges does Australia face on the world stage, and how can it overcome them? Reflecting the messy reality of foreign policy decision-making, this book helps you to understand the changes and continuities in Australia's approach. For example, does the US withdrawal from Vietnam in 1973 and collapse of South Vietnam continue to cast a shadow over Australian foreign policy, or is it relevant only in understanding the dynamics of the cold war? Using an Australian Strategic Culture framework, O'Keefe sheds light on the characteristics that make Australia behave in a way different to any other country and equips you with analytic skills to understand the main debates, such as: - In what sense could Australia be seen as a 'good' international citizen? - Have national interests trumped global responsibilities? - How does the intersection between civil society and public opinion interact with foreign policy making? This book is essential reading if you are a student of Australian foreign policy, as well as of broader Australian domestic politics and international relations.

Download or read book The Tragedy of Australian Foreign Policy written by Randall Doyle and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2022-01-27 with total page 235 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Evolution of Australian Foreign Policy is a book that presents a modern-day argument concerning Australia's external affairs policies in the 21st century. The book makes the case that it is time for Australia to move on from its historic British colonial roots and its subsequent subservient roles within the empires of Great Britain and the United States since Federation in 1901. The ongoing military debacle and strategic disaster of the U.S.-led Iraq War has triggered a movement within Australia's intellectual and political communities to rethink Australian foreign policy. An impressive group of dissenters began to question Australia's blind obedience to the post-World War II American empire. And, since the extraordinary publication of The Palace Letters, in 2020, the charm and distinction of being a part of the British Commonwealth has begun to lose its glory and uniqueness for a growing number of Australians. In truth, Australia is a nation in transition. It is becoming an independent Republic. A nation of Australians. Led by an Australian president elected by Australians. The nation of Australia has come of age. No more masters of any kind to rule over it. Australia has finally become the master of its own destiny and fate in the 21st century.
Book Synopsis Australian Foreign Policy in Asia by : Allan Patience
Download or read book Australian Foreign Policy in Asia written by Allan Patience and published by Springer. This book was released on 2017-12-12 with total page 322 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book sets out to discuss what kind of ‘middle power’ Australia is, and whether its identity as a middle power negatively influences its relationship with Asia. It looks at the history of the middle power concept, develops three concepts of middle power status and examines Australia’s relationships with China, Japan and Indonesia as a focus. It argues that Australia is an ‘awkward partner’ in its relations with Asia due to both its historical colonial and discriminatory past, as well its current dependence upon the United States for a security alliance. It argues this should be changed by adopting a new middle power concept in Australian foreign policy.
