In common with THE UNIVERSAL MATRIX, the astrological interpretations are more striking, psychological and critical than what we came to expect from Rudhyar during the second half of the 20th century. Some sample passages from THE TWELVE ASTROLOGICAL HOUSES: "Every personality is the child of an individual vision (Ascendant) and of a set of collective habits (second house), Rudhyar writes. The great person is one who uses such habits to demonstrate the vision - and thereby repolarizes them. The weak personality lets collective habits use the vision which thereby becomes distorted and materialized. Every personality is a field of integration for individual vision (first house) and collective habits (second house) - our inner life is very often a battlefield! It is in the third house that the issue . . . is determined; for it is the quality of the person's environment and of his mentality (largely conditioned by education) which will decide in the third house whether the fourth house factors (ego, home, and so on) will be energized preponderantly either by those developed in the first house or those belonging to the second house." PLANETS IN THE FIFTH HOUSE "When a strong planet or a group of planets are located in the fifth house of a natal chart this does not mean the native will necessarily be a particularly gifted artist, or a great lover, or the progenitor of many children, and so on. It indicates, rather, that matters related to this house will be insistently the focal point for the person's attention. The native will be involved in fifth house issues and experiences by apparent choice or by compulsion . . . They will create problems which will demand a solution. Problems however constitute opportunities for growth and for 'creative accomplishment' - thus the title of this series. Where there are no problems, the mind and will of the individual are not roused into operation . . ." MOON IN THE ELEVENTH HOUSE "The Moon in the eleventh house signifies a person highly sensitive to social moods and changes, who is often the mouthpiece of some great mass-movement seeking expression in a subterranean manner. The spiritual-occult systems proclaimed by Rudolph Steiner are much involved in personalized states of consciousness and dependent on personal 'revelations'. Indeed, it might be argued the 'revelations' of the seer could merely be projections of his collective, national and personal 'hopes and wishes' and fears and prejudices, rather than authentic and significantly interpreted revelations of spiritual realities. The traditional chart of Joan of Arc shows Moon conjunct Jupiter in the eleventh house - indeed an excellent symbol for one whose "Voices" saved a Kingdom . . ."

My first impression, once I got started reading, is that this book is an ideal blend of serious subject matter handled with respect for the reader, with just enough astrologese for the basic-to-medium-advanced astrology student. Noel does not overwhelm you with the level of detail that is automatically off-putting for the beginner. You won't be scared picking up this book, in other words, if you aren't an astrology expert. This is book is for the person who (in my opinion) would be dissatisfied with the superficial or cookbook style astrology book and is looking for something that goes deeper, that explains the pieces of the self we don't usually discuss, even in the astrological world, but most people who want to understand their own (and others') psychology wish could be discussed with some depth and understanding of what's really going on in our psyches as expressed through our natal charts. Speaking as a professional astrologer, I personally got the most out of the very end of the book, where Noel discusses 'houses as psychological defenses.' If you read this book for nothing else, get it for the series of meditations Noel asks you to do; those on their own are very valuable (and I would suggest keeping a journal as you go, to capture your responses). Designed to meet the most demanding needs of astrologers and those doing astrological research, the tables cover the range of latitudes from 0 to 66 degrees and list all cusps to one-tenth of a minute of arc. The tables list the cusps at even four minute intervals of sidereal time, making linear interpolation practical and straightforward. There are 360 separate tables of house cusps with each showing the house cusps for latitudes 0 to 66 degrees at a single value of sidereal time. At the top of each table the sidereal time is printed in hours, minutes, and seconds on the left, and in degrees, minutes, and seconds on the right. Since the Midheaven remains the same for all latitudes, it is printed once at the top of the page, and because of its importance is listed to a precision of one second of arc The general rule for finding southern latitude cusps is to add twelve hours to the sidereal time, look up the cusps as if the latitude were north, and then reverse the zodiacal sign of all the cusps found. This process is made easier in this volume through the use of separate headings for southern latitudes at the bottom of each table. Instead of adding twelve hours to the sidereal time, use the sidereal time headings at the bottom of the page when locating the proper table. This gives the same table that would be found by adding the twelve hours and using the northern latitude headings. It is usually necessary to interpolate to find cusps for an exact time or latitude that falls between two listings in the tables. Interpolation is the process of finding a small correction to be added or subtracted from a cusp in the tables to compensate for the difference between the value of the cusp at the listed sidereal time or latitude and the value of the cusp at the actual sidereal time or latitude. Generally speaking, interpolation must be done twice for each cusp: a correction for the sidereal time and another for the latitude. The Midheaven need only be corrected for sidereal time since it remains the same at all latitudes. It is no surprise that the difficulty of interpolation depends upon the accuracy required. Included in this book are explicit instructions for three techniques for finding the house cusps, each of which gives successively more accurate results. All tables needed for all three techniques are included in the book.
