Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In many respects, collecting debt is a negative job—a fact that all credit risk professionals must be sensitive to. The typical collector may attempt 120 calls a day and speak to 36 customers, and then gain a kept promise from just half of those 36 customers he speaks to. This means the collector has just 18 kept promises and 102 negative results. An 85 per cent negative response rate translates to seven hours of negative feedback in an eight-hour day. This book offers the epiphany that great customer service in debt collections yields far greater kept promises than the above number. Consistent reiteration and coaching of the collections team about the importance of quality has always delivered a 25 to 35 per cent higher performance than the average. There are tips in this book that help you improve collection performance by embracing quality service. This is tried and tested in my career, and this is what this book reiterates.

Book excerpt: The Federal Trade Commission receives more complaints about rogue debt collecting than about any activity besides identity theft. Dramatically and entertainingly, Bad Paper reveals why. It tells the story of Aaron Siegel, a former banking executive, and Brandon Wilson, a former armed robber, who become partners and go in quest of "paper"—the uncollected debts that are sold off by banks for pennies on the dollar. As Aaron and Brandon learn, the world of consumer debt collection is an unregulated shadowland where operators often make unwarranted threats and even collect debts that are not theirs. Introducing an unforgettable cast of strivers and rogues, Jake Halpern chronicles their lives as they manage high-pressure call centers, hunt for paper in Las Vegas casinos, and meet in parked cars to sell the social security numbers and account information of unsuspecting consumers. He also tracks a "package" of debt that is stolen by unscrupulous collectors, leading to a dramatic showdown with guns in a Buffalo corner store. Along the way, he reveals the human cost of a system that compounds the troubles of hardworking Americans and permits banks to ignore their former customers. The result is a vital exposé that is also a bravura feat of storytelling.

Book excerpt: The 5 Elements of the Highly Effective Debt Collector is the first How to collect a debt book of its kind, in that it breaks the debt collecting process down into five core fundamental areas. After years of training in the collection industry, I have found that these five fundamental areas are at the center of revealing the mystery behind why only a small percentage of debt collectors produce at a high level and more importantly explains why the larger percentage of low to mediocre performers never reach a top producing level. Not only does this book establish fundamental concepts every debt collector must understand to maximize personal or agencys earning potential, it also teaches: sound principles of engagement, valuable communication concepts, effective sales rebuttal techniques, as well as a system of file management that if followed and executed properly will more than double a collectors efficiency and effectiveness in less than 30 days The 5 Elements principles and concepts were designs to ensure that no matter an individuals talent level, years in the industry, or position held within an agency, the end user will understand clearly and be enriched by the experience.

Book excerpt: How global contemporary art reanimates the past as a resource for the present, combating modern art's legacy of Eurocentrism. If European modernism was premised on the new—on surpassing the past, often by assigning it to the “traditional” societies of the Global South—global contemporary art reanimates the past as a resource for the present. In this account of what globalization means for contemporary art, David Joselit argues that the creative use of tradition by artists from around the world serves as a means of combatting modern art's legacy of Eurocentrism. Modernism claimed to live in the future and relegated the rest of the world to the past. Global contemporary art shatters this myth by reactivating various forms of heritage—from literati ink painting in China to Aboriginal painting in Australia—in order to propose new and different futures. Joselit analyzes not only how heritage becomes contemporary through the practice of individual artists but also how a cultural infrastructure of museums, biennials, and art fairs worldwide has emerged as a means of generating economic value, attracting capital and tourist dollars. Joselit traces three distinct forms of modernism that developed outside the West, in opposition to Euro-American modernism: postcolonial, socialist realism, and the underground. He argues that these modern genealogies are synchronized with one another and with Western modernism to produce global contemporary art. Joselit discusses curation and what he terms “the curatorial episteme,” which, through its acts of framing or curating, can become a means of recalibrating hierarchies of knowledge—and can contribute to the dual projects of decolonization and deimperialization.

Book excerpt: As someone who has made thousands upon thousands of debt collection calls as a credit manager and first party collector and as an agency owner and third party collector, I wanted to share what I know about making these calls so that you can improve on your calls. To take the fear out of it, just remember that making a collection call is like making a customer service call. You are calling about a problem with the account and you just want to resolve it. You will learn what common excuses people give and what you can say to them in order to keep the call moving in the right direction and not going off track. You will learn how to notice a red flag with an account that you are calling and be able to avoid disaster by taking specific steps based on your knowledge of what is happening with that particular account. This book will help anyone who owns a business and needs to call customers that are past due. It will help accounts receivable clerks who make calls to delinquent accounts; it will help credit managers who make collection calls or "your account is on credit hold" calls. This book will also help collectors who work for a third party collection agency. This book is meant to be a guide for bill collectors. I have shared with you actual and specific steps I have taken in my years of doing collection work that have worked well for me. I have found that when making collection calls and dealing with excuses, you must be firm, tread lightly, have compassion and treat the account carefully. Treat the account (not the customer) like a child who needs your guidance and help to get this paid. This has worked very well for me and I have successfully collected more money than other collectors based on following these steps.

Book excerpt: The book shows that self-help in commercial law is a fast, inexpensive and efficient alternative to court enforcement. Self-help remedies and private debt collection are largely but not exclusively features of common law jurisdictions, since remnants of private enforcement can still be found in contract law in civilian systems. The book argues that – despite their usefulness – self-help and private debt collection entail significant risks, especially for consumer debtors. This means that private enforcement needs to be accompanied by the introduction of tailor-made consumer-debtor protection regulation. Specific attention is given to factoring, which functions in many instances as a form of pseudo-private debt collection and which has been exploited to bypass sector-specific consumer protection regulations.

Book excerpt: Many Canadians face financial crises at some time in their lives. While some debt problems require professional assistance, most are easily resolved if they’re caught early enough. The key to such resolutions is admitting you have a problem managing your personal financial life—and taking control of it. Otherwise, like a disease, personal debt will advance—unrestrained—into a compounded fear. And it’ll exhaust your energy and finances, strain your relationships, and challenge your mental and physical health, along the way. This book helps readers to determine the nature and severity of their debt issues and offers suggestions for both solving them, and avoiding them in the future. Covering areas such as “the danger signs,” student loans, and the distinction between proposals and bankruptcies, Art of Debt Management provides practical, intuitive advice for individuals suffering financial difficulties.
