The bow & arrow are known to have been invented by the end of the Upper Paleolithic, and for at least 10,000 years archery was an important military & hunting skill, and is featured prominently in the mythologies of many cultures. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One of the most devastating weapons of the Middle Ages, the crossbow probably originated in the Western Roman Empire early in the fourth century, its design perhaps suggested by the balista, an ancient form of catapult. The medieval crossbow fired a twelve-inch bolt (quarrel) capable of piercing all but the strongest armor and is widely credited with helping Richard the Lionhearted defeat the Saracens at the battle of Arfus during the Third Crusade. and nbsp; and nbsp; and nbsp;Despite the fact that crossbows were carried by thousands of soldiers in medieval warfare, this book is the only work ever devoted exclusively to this widely used weapon. In addition to detailing the history of the crossbow and its military and sporting uses, the author also deals with an arsenal of related weapons, from the siege engines, balistas and catapults of the ancients to such arms as the Turkish bow and the Chinese repeating crossbow. and nbsp; and nbsp; and nbsp;Enhanced with over 200 illustrations, ranging from contemporary battle pictures to scale constructional plans, and replete with scholarly detail and intriguing anecdotes, this classic study will interest historians, medievalists, sportsmen and any student of arms and armor.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the Paleolithic era, over 250,000 years ago, archery was invented. With bows and arrows made from wood (mostly pine), archery was presumably used only for hunting. As technology advanced, stone arrowheads were fashioned on the ends of arrows, making them more effective. Archery arrived in the Americas around 2,500 BC. While archery was mostly used for hunting, the tribes of the Southern United States created a game that involved shooting arrows into a moving hoop. The Indian tribes of the Great Plains were the first to become adept at archery on horseback. During the Iron Age, Babylonians and Assyrians used archery in warfare. Just as Native American tribes learned to perfect archery on horses, these peoples became skilled in archery on moving war chariots. Into the Middle Ages, European warfare relied heavily on both skilled and unskilled archers. Implementing mass archery tactics during the Crusades, the English invented their own bow, the English long bow, one of the most popular styles to this day. Today, archery is an Olympic sporting event, a skill used in recreational hunting, and somewhat of a lost art. Recently, archery has become a bit of a fad in America and the United Kingdom because of the rise in popular culture of archers like Robin Hood, Green Arrow and The Hunger Games'Katniss Everdeen.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: No one knows for certain just when the bow and arrow came into use in America, but they were in use from the far North to the tip of South America when Europeans first arrived. Over the hemisphere the equipment ranged from very poor to excellent, with the finest bows of all being made in the Northwest of North America. Some of these bows rivaled the ancient classic bow in beauty of design and workmanship. The attitudes of whites toward Indian archers and their equipment have ranged from the highest of praise with mythical feats rivaling those of William Tell and Robin Hood-–o mockery and derision for the Indians' short, "deformed" bows and small arrows. The Laubins have found most of the popular conceptions of Indian archery to be erroneous-as are most of the preconceived notions about Indians—and in this book they attempt to correct some of these false impressions and to give a true picture of this ancient art as practiced by the original Americans. Following an introduction and history of Indian archery are chapters on comparison of bows, bow making and sinewed bows, horn bows, strings, arrows, quivers, shooting, medicine bows, Indian crossbows, and blowguns. Those wishing to learn something about the use of archery tackle by American Indians, something of the ingenuity associated with its manufacture and maintenance, and something about the importance of archery in everyday Indian life will find in this book a wealth of new, valuable, and important information.
