Book excerpt: The Indian Arts and Crafts Act was enacted by Congress to prevent the fraudulent sale of arts and crafts as Indian-made when they are not. Seemingly benign in intent, the act creates false distinctions, argues Sheffield, about who or what is "Indian" or "Indian-made." "Indians" are defined by the act according only to their political status - as members of federally or state-recognized tribes, or as individuals certified by either. Excluded are artists-craftspeople who are Indian according to ancestry or sociocultural traits but not according to the statutory definition. The result, Sheffield claims, is an "arbitrary process that creates arbitrary effects.".

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: At the dawn of the twenty-first century, America finds itself on the brink of a new racial consciousness. The old, unquestioned confidence with which individuals can be classified (as embodied, for instance, in previous U.S. census categories) has been eroded. In its place are shifting paradigms and new norms for racial identity. Eva Marie Garroutte examines the changing processes of racial identification and their implications by looking specifically at the case of American Indians.

Book excerpt: It's time for America to move beyond zoning, argues city planner M. Nolan Gray in Arbitrary Lines: How Zoning Broke the American City and How to Fix It. With lively explanations, Gray shows why zoning abolition is a necessary--if not sufficient--condition for building more affordable, vibrant, equitable, and sustainable cities. Gray lays the groundwork for this ambitious cause by clearing up common misconceptions about how American cities regulate growth and examining four contemporary critiques of zoning (its role in increasing housing costs, restricting growth in our most productive cities, institutionalizing racial and economic segregation, and mandating sprawl). He sets out some of the efforts currently underway to reform zoning and charts how land-use regulation might work in the post-zoning American city. Arbitrary Lines is an invitation to rethink the rules that will continue to shape American life--where we may live or work, who we may encounter, how we may travel. If the task seems daunting, the good news is that we have nowhere to go but up

Book excerpt: India has been a torchbearer in enhancing the ideals of international law. It has made persistent efforts to, among other things, promote a democratic multilateral legal framework, eliminate global economic inequality, enhance true democratic values and human rights, protect the environment and achieve sustainable development. India and International Law examines how India has attempted to achieve these goals in international relations and what has been therefore its contribution to the codification and progressive development of international law. The work will be a useful reference tool to scholars, academicians and policy-makers who are seeking practical expertise on India’s policy and practical approach to international law. It provides excellent reference to the case laws of the Indian judiciary bearing reference to the implementation of international law at national level and India’s position as of 31 December 2004 on the Multilateral Treaties deposited with the UN Secretary-General.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Don Smith - or Lelooska, as he was usually called - was a prominent Native American artist and storyteller in the Pacific Northwest. Born in 1933 of mixed blood Cherokee heritage, he was adopted as an adult by the prestigious Kwakiutl Sewid clan and had relationships with elders from a wide range of tribal backgrounds. Initially producing curio items for sale to tourists and regalia for Oregon Indians, Lelooska emerged in the late 1950s as one of a handful of artists who proved crucial to the renaissance of Northwest Coast Indian art. He also developed into a supreme performer and educator, staging shows of dances, songs, and storytelling. During the peak years, from the 1970s to the early 1990s, the family shows with Lelooska as the centerpiece attracted as many as 30,000 people annually. In this book, historian and family friend Chris Friday shares and annotates interviews that he conducted with Lelooska, between 1993 and ending shortly before the artist's death, in 1996. This is the story of a man who reached, quite literally, a million or more people in his lifetime and whose life was at once exceptional and emblematic.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Circle of Goods compiles the stories of Native American women and examines their kinship, wage work, and informal economies. Responding to the upheavals of reservation life brought about by federal policies—from commodity rations to welfare reform—Mandan, Hidatsa and Arikara women, each with distinct histories and cultural practices, stand at the center of the Fort Berthold reservation economy. Berman introduces the concept of ceremonial relations of production to explain the contradictory effects of economic incentives and cultural commitments, and argues that the historical movement of people and goods through a series of structured dependencies often gives rise to creative strategies for survival and new social identities.
