This book was released on 2015-01-01 with total page 160 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The seventeen essays in this collection relate to the Khasi-Jaintias of Meghalaya in North East India and cover a time span from their pre-colonial past, through the colonial era and into more contemporary times. All but one of the essays in this collection were researched and published during the author's years at NEHU. All the essays have been looked at afresh and updated. The essays do not purport to be a complete modern history of the tribe-there are several areas of their history that have not been covered in this collection as they have been studied by other colleagues and scholars. The collection starts with an essay on the division of history of the region into time phases and critiques the applicability of these divisions. Several essays in the collection relate to the trade and economic activity of the Khasi-Jaintias. Four essays in the collection focus on the Khasi states - British policy toward the states, Syiemship succession, the federation of the Khasis states and the incorporation of states into the Khasi- Jaintia Hills district and India. The collection includes essays on David Scott, Tirot Sing, Thomas Jones, Hajom Kissor Singh and David Roy. Of the many more significant and silent makers of its history several stand out prominently. A rather long article takes the discussion to the traditional governance of the Khasi hills and brings it up to more recent times. The last essay provides a perspective of the people, the land and the state.

Book excerpt: "The Khasis" is a comprehensive anthropological study of the Khasi people, an indigenous tribe living in the Khasi and Jaintia Hills in northeast India. Written by P. R. T. Gurdon, who conducted extensive fieldwork among the Khasis, the book delves into the tribe's history, culture, religion, economy, social structure, and political organization. The book begins by tracing the Khasis' origin myths and their migration to the hills and goes on to describe their traditional way of life, including their matrilineal family system, agricultural practices, and religious beliefs. Gurdon also examines the impact of British colonialism on the Khasis, and how it led to changes in their economy and political organization. Throughout the book, Gurdon provides a detailed and nuanced portrayal of the Khasis, drawing on his firsthand observations as well as historical and ethnographic sources. "The Khasis" remains an important work on the tribe and continues to be a valuable resource for scholars and anyone interested in the anthropology and history of northeast India.

Book excerpt: Traditional institutions in the Khasi-Jaintia society are “living organisms” which have existed for centuries and internally evolved from one phase to another. Despite having come into contact with newer and more modern forms of administration, they continue to exist, backed by local public opinion that has called for their continuity amidst diminishing responsibility and utility. This collection of papers explores the landscapes of traditional institutions that exist in the present Khasi and Jaintia Hills in Meghalaya, India. The chapters blend oral tradition with historical records and available sources from secondary literature. They examine the interplay of power and functions between the constitutional authorities, such as the state government, and the Autonomous District Councils and traditional authorities represented by the traditional institutions.

Its heritage can be traced from the prehistoric times of Stone Age up to the present. Though comprising mainly of the matrilineal Khasi, Garo, and Jaintia tribes – the state also houses many other lesser known communities such as the Hajong,Sakachep, Biate, Koch, Dalu, Margnar and the Nepali. All these communities find voice in this volume. This book looks at the state of Meghalaya exhaustively from the perspective of heritage documentation and maintenance. The 38 chapters written by anthropologists and independent researchers, present the rich traditions found in the region. This volume will be of great help to academicians, researchers, students, and laymen interested in a comprehensive study of the region. Please note: This title is co-published with Manohar Publishers, New Delhi. Taylor & Francis does not sell or distribute the Hardback in South Asia.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1841, the Welsh sent their first missionary, Thomas Jones, to evangelise the tribal peoples of the Khasi Hills of north-east India. This book follows Jones from rural Wales to Cherrapunji, the wettest place on earth and now one of the most Christianised parts of India. As colonised colonisers, the Welsh were to have a profound impact on the culture and beliefs of the Khasis. The book also foregrounds broader political, scientific, racial and military ideologies that mobilised the Khasi Hills into an interconnected network of imperial control. Its themes are universal: crises of authority, the loneliness of geographical isolation, sexual scandal, greed and exploitation, personal and institutional dogma, individual and group morality. Written by a direct descendant of Thomas Jones, it makes a significant contribution in orienting the scholarship of imperialism to a much-neglected corner of India, and will appeal to students of the British imperial experience more broadly.

Book excerpt: This book provides a technological history of modern India, in particular the Nehruvian development in the context of the Cold War. Through a series of case studies about military modernization, transportation infrastructure, and electric power, it examines how the ideals of autarky and technological indigenization conflicted with the economic and political realities of the Cold War world. Where other studies tend to focus on the political leaders and economists who oversaw development, this book demonstrates how the perspective of the engineers, government bureaucrats, and aid workers informed and ultimately implemented development.
