Book excerpt: Anger is a daily experience. It is encountered in a number of interpersonal, family and occupational situations. Research indicates that even "normal" parents worry that they will lose control of their anger and harm their children. When short-lived and of low intensity, anger may be of some help to us; in contrast, when it is persistent and intense, it is typically highly disruptive.; This text reviews facts and theories of anger. Anger is differentiated from annoyance, fury, rage, hostility and the behaviours of aggression and violence, and attention is paid to understanding anger both as a normal experience and as a clinical disorder. Specific anger diagnoses are presented to describe disruptive anger states and traits. Anger in criminal populations is also discussed and behaviour-analytic, cognitive-constructivist and cross-cultural perspectives are presented in detail.; The book argues that it is important to understand the causes, correlations and outcomes of anger and to develop effective remediation programmes when anger is excessive and disruptive. Thus, following a meta-analyses of the effectiveness of published treatments, two chapters present "ideal" therapy programmes for adult and childhood adolescent anger disorders. Finally, a model is presented to help understand anger development and resolution.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In recent years, a great deal has been written on the topic of aggression; another book on the same topic might seem superfluous at this time. However, the present volume is not just-or even primarily-about aggres sion. It is, rather, a book on anger. Anger and aggression are closely related phenomena, and it is not possible to discuss one without the other. Yet, not all anger is aggressive, nor can all aggression be attributed to anger. Therefore, somewhat different considerations apply to each. Even more importantly, the type of theoretical generalizations one can make differs depending upon whether the primary focus is on anger or aggression. The present volume is subtitled "an essay on emotion." This indicates that the generalizations to be drawn have more to do with emotional responses (e.g., grief, love, envy, etc.) than with various forms of aggression (e.g., riots, war, crimes of violence, etc.). Stated somewhat differently, anger is here being used as a paradigm case for the study of emotion, not for the study of aggression.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Research on the roles played by hostility and anger in the etiology and course of coronary heart disease (CHD) has mushroomed. Moreover, there has been considerable progress in the knowledge of neurohormonal correlates of anger and hostility that could conceivably play a role in the pathogenesis of CHD. The editors of this volume believe that this is the appropriate time in the history of coronary-prone behavior research to take stock -- to identify the basic questions that need further elucidation, and to provide future direction. Although there is a surprising consensus among the contributors about the nature of the critical issues, they each offer a somewhat different perspective. This book will provide a variety of perspectives on what is known and what still needs to be known -- a useful source for promising research hypotheses.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since classical times, philosophers and physicians have identified anger as a human frailty that can lead to violence and human suffering, but with the development of a modern science of abnormal psychology and mental disorders, it has been written off as merely an emotional symptom and excluded from most accepted systems of psychiatric diagnosis. Yet despite the lack of scientific recognition, anger-related violence is often in the news, and courts are increasingly mandating anger management treatment. It is time for a fresh scientific examination of one of the most fundamental human emotions and what happens when it becomes pathological, and this thorough, persuasive book offers precisely such a probing analysis.Using both clinical data and a variety of case studies, esteemed anger researchers Raymond A. DiGiuseppe and Raymond Chip Tafrate argue for a new diagnostic classification, Anger Regulation and Expression Disorder, that will help bring about clinical improvements and increased scientific understanding of anger. After situating anger in both historical and emotional contexts, they report research that supports the existence of several subtypes of the disorder and review treatment outcome studies and new interventions to improve treatment. The first book that fully explores anger as a clinical phenomenon and provides a reliable set of assessment criteria, it represents a major step toward establishing the clear definitions and scientific basis necessary for assessing, diagnosing, and treating anger disorders.

Anger is everywhere — behind everything from road rage to wrap rage, domestic violence to international conflicts. People cling to their anger, as a tool of influence and a driver of revenge. But is anger really ever useful? And can we learn to overcome it? In this entertaining and ground-breaking book, two of Australia’s leading clinical psychologists take a radical approach to anger management, exploding the irrational beliefs that fuel this noxious and misunderstood emotion. Through numerous examples from popular culture and the consulting room, and with a sizable dose of humour, the authors show how to combat anger by substituting empathy and understanding for righteous angry judgments. Along the way, readers will learn a new way of viewing people and their actions that is at once powerful and serene.

FitzSimons Allison 164 pp. Drawing from what perceptive non-Christians such as Freud, D.H. Lawrence, Reich and Marcuse have said about the human condition, Allison examines four contemporary patterns of the discontents of modern humanity-Anger, Disesteem, Guilt and Death. Believing that Christianity has been hurt as much by its friends as by its enemies, with deep pastoral concern Allison addresses the anguish many Christians feel today. He then discusses the gospel and its timeless message to our discontents. Skeptics, both within and outside the Church who hunger for more than "bread alone" will find this book an occasion for delightful surprises. "This is one of the most stimulating and evocative book I have read for some time. It is by no means the old psychological/theological witches' brew but really relates Christian doctrine to current and future questions about our human destiny."-David H. C.
