Book Synopsis The Angel of Lygon Street by : David Lewis Paget
Download or read book The Angel of Lygon Street written by David Lewis Paget and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2017-05-08 with total page 152 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Once more a collection of 70 narrative poems, with disparate themes, something, in fact, for everybody. This is my fifteenth collection, beginning with Timepieces, which was largely Gothic, to the present collection which are rather less bloodthirsty than those early volumes. I like to think of most of the subject material as bizarre these days, more subtle perhaps, but just as interesting in their wayward themes. The fact that most of them are written at night, in a dim, quiet room, probably adds to the flavour. There are ghost stories, weird stories, strange characters who inhabit eerie buildings and live lives of quiet desperation, and who may only be found between the pages of this book. There is the odd bit of humour as well, to lighten the atmosphere if one is getting over tense. You can read it in the study, in bed, even take it into the bathroom with you if you don't want to break the thread of a good tale. But keep it away from the neighbours, or you'll lose it for good.

Book Synopsis Angels of Death by : Roger S. Magnusson
Download or read book Angels of Death written by Roger S. Magnusson and published by Yale University Press. This book was released on 2002-01-01 with total page 352 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This groundbreaking book uncovers the hidden world of illicit physician-assisted suicide and euthanasia. Through the frank and often troubling first-hand accounts of health professionals who have been involved in assisted death, the book records for the first time this secret but real area of medical and nursing practice. Through face-to-face interviews with these "angels of death, " Roger S. Magnusson explores the social practices, relationships, and networks that constitute "underground" euthanasia. How is assisted death actually practiced within health care settings? What are the issues that surround the making of such a momentous decision? How do health care workers justify their attitudes and actions in this area? Angels of Death offers detailed answers to these questions and many others. The doctors, nurses, and therapists who were interviewed pseudonymously for this study work in the HIV/AIDS communities in the United States and Australia. Their perspectives and practices, their attitudes and feelings, illuminate the assisted death debate and expose a variety of disturbing issues, including the reality of "botched attempts, " euthanasia without consent, and unduly hasty measures to bring about death. The testimony of medical practitioners, combined with Magnusson's thoughtful assessment of the issues, will be of intense interest to both opponents and advocates of proposals to legalize euthanasia.

Download or read book Communism written by Jeff Sparrow and published by Melbourne Univ. Publishing. This book was released on 2007 with total page 350 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 'What I remember most about the communists is their passion... ' For more than seventy years, idealists and rebels of all stripes saw in the Communist Party the best hope for a world remade. Who were the people who dedicated themselves to that beautiful dream? How did they experience its shimmering promise - and cope with its shattering collapse? This is the story of Guido Baracchi, the playboy and dilettante who experienced communism at its best - and its very worst. His love affair with Marxism took him from his father's astronomical observatory to the rough halls of the legendary Wobblies. He debated Bob Menzies at the University of Melbourne; he wooed novelist Katharine Susannah Prichard on a luxury ocean liner; he belonged to illegal organisations in two world wars. The Sun dubbed him 'Melbourne's Lenin', and ASIO classified him 'a person of bad moral character and violent and unstable political views'. From Weimar Germany to Stalin's Russia, from Melbourne's Pentridge gaol to the bohemian colony of Montsalvat, Baracchi entwined political intrigue with a series of tempestuous romances with poets, artists and playwrights. Yet communism remained his real love and communism broke his heart - in a betrayal that still resonates in the political choices available today.

Download or read book Darkness Unbound written by Keri Arthur and published by Dell. This book was released on 2011-09-27 with total page 402 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The fight against darkness rages on for the next generation—in New York Times bestselling author Keri Arthur’s exciting new series set in the world of the Guardians. Being half werewolf and half Aedh, Risa Jones can enter the twilight realms between life and death and see the reapers, supernatural beings that collect the souls of the dead. But she soon makes a terrifying discovery: Some sinister force is stealing souls, preventing the dead from ever knowing the afterlife. Reapers escort souls—not snatch them—but Risa is still unnerved when a reaper shadows her in search of someone Risa has never met: her own father, an Aedh priest, who is rumored to be tampering with the gates of hell for a dark purpose. With the help of her “aunt”—half-werewolf, half-vampire Riley Jenson—and an Aedh named Lucian who may have lost his wings but none of his sex appeal, Risa must pursue whatever shadowy practitioner of blood magic is seizing souls, and somehow stop her father . . . before all hell breaks loose.
