Book excerpt: In this book the author explores the particularities of the status of the method in psychoanalysis, linked to the specificity of unconscious psychic processes. If the method aims at ensuring a level of technical mastery, it must also make sure that analytic treatment does not become an 'application' of knowledge. A modern conception of the analytic situation implies going beyond the classical pair of 'setting-interpretation'. Starting out from the postulate of a transferential dynamic of the encounter, the author brings into play the pair 'analyzing site-situation'. The 'analyzing situation' emerges from the utilization, in a found-created mode (Winnicott), of an initial site constituted by a set of means put at the patients disposal. The analyzing situation includes patient and analyst in a self-organizing structure. The notion of a site makes it possible to approach the difference between psychoanalysis and analytic psychotherapy differently: each site has a 'logic', an intrinsic functional coherence, which have their own incidence on the therapeutic process.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Playing and Reality Revisited is the first volume of a new IPA series dedicated to the greatest writings of psychoanalysis. More than forty years after its publication, Donald W. Winnicott's Playing and Reality is still a source of inspiration for numerous psychoanalysts. The authors have invited some of the most eminent specialists of Winnicott's thinking to write on the most significant themes that the author discovered and highlighted brillantly in his book. They show how such concepts as transitional object and phenomena, the use of an object, and mirroring, remain essential today, and explore the way in which Winnicott conceived playing, creativity, cultural experience and adolescence, demonstrating their contemporary relevance. This book is both an homage to Winnicott and a fascinating extension of his work.

Cutting-edge theory and research is presented on core psychological motives, such as the need for esteem, security, consistency, and achievement; motivational systems that arise to address these fundamental needs; the process and consequences of goal pursuit, including the role of individual differences and contextual moderators; and implications for personal well-being and interpersonal and intergroup relations.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Cognitive Behavioral Analysis System of Psychotherapy (CBASP) is a set of techniques that has proven to be efficacious in the treatment of chronic depression. This book describes ways in which it can be extended in the treatment of patients with a wide variety of psychological disorders and difficulties, in a wide variety of settings. Vivid case illustrations and session transcripts illuminate the authors' presentation of appropriate modifications and implementations of the basic approach for personality and anxiety disorders, behavior problems in children, couples distress, and anger. The approach is flexible, efficient, and simple to train. One chapter focuses on methods for helping parents to help their own children more effectively. CBASP has been shown to work both for patients with severe psychological symptoms and for those with more common everyday problems; both for those who are psychologically sophisticated and for those who are not. Simple Treatments for Complex Problems offers powerful new tools for the clinical armamentarium of mental health professionals who do psychotherapy, and the conceptual armamentarium of those who train them and study treatment effectiveness.
