The Jesuits wrote treatises on Chinese music theory and culture, which they brought back to the West. These treatises were studied by Western musicians, eventually leading to Debussy’s use of the pentatonic scale. After exploring this history, one can find the ways in which Debussy’s philosophy on “Nature” and “Harmony” in fact parallels those same philosophical concepts in Chinese culture. Both Debussy and the ancient Chinese believed in spiritual interconnections between the Earth, the heavens, humankind, and the arts. These connections impacted the way they wrote and performed music. Once the historical, philosophical, and cultural interconnections are understood, one may understand Debussy’s music in a new light. This lecture-recital document reinterprets a selection of Debussy’s piano music based on these philosophical and aesthetic parallels.

Debussy is one of the most prominent composers in the history of Western music, and his music draws on many features for inspiration, among which Asian elements and impressionism are the most representative. Debussy was inspired by Asian music, literature, and painting in many compositions, giving these works distinctive sound qualities as well as artistic appeal.Based on a comprehensive study of scholarly literature as well as theoretical analysis, this project explores several Asian influences on Debussy and offers reasons for the formation of Asian style in Debussy's music. Particular elements of Asian style examined include Japanese prints and painting, Javanese gamelan music, and the Chinese pentatonic scale. Through the analysis of several of Debussy's piano pieces, including "Et la lune descend sur le temple qui fut", "La fille aux cheveux de lin", and "Le palais du silence", This study discusses how Debussy's exotic colors reflect various Asian styles. Additionally, through research on Chinese music history and theory, this project compares and summarizes several differences between Chinese music and Debussy s own music in various compositions. It also analyzes three Chinese piano pieces in order to make comparisons with Debussy's music. This research supports the conclusion that Asian influences, including Chinese elements, endowed Debussy with indispensable inspiration and artistic expression in his musical compositions.

Book excerpt: Bright Sheng (1955-) is a contemporary Chinese composer whose music spans Chinese and Western culture. The two piano trios chosen for this project, Four Movements for Piano Trio and Tibetan Dance, have not been thoroughly discussed and analyzed. Sheng's chamber music deserves academic attention because of his creative integration of Chinese and Western culture in his compositions. He fuses Chinese musical elements such as heterophony, pentatonic scales, and Chinese folksongs within the Western genres and structure. He vividly captures the spirit of Chinese music with a contemporary flavor, thus creating his own musical language. This paper will begin with an account of Bright Sheng's biography, followed by an overview of the Chinese musical characteristics that Sheng brings into his compositions. These elements include the aesthetic concepts and expressions in Chinese music, the implications of he ("harmony"), pentatonic modes, and diverse rhythmic patterns. The influence of Chinese folksongs, and how they are incorporated in Sheng's compositions, along with two significant figures who are influential in Sheng's life, Leonard Bernstein and Béla Bartók will be part of the discussion. An analysis of the formal structure of the Four Movements for Piano Trio is provided in the fourth chapter. Along with the analysis is a discussion of how Sheng fuses various Chinese elements into his music, and creates a unique compositional technique, "Chinese sequence," to construct the third movement. The second part will be an analysis of Tibetan Dance and the interpretive possibilities that can be derived from the ambience that Sheng creates through his compositional styles.

The Treatise covers her most significant solo piano compositions to date, which include Singing in the Mountain, Guessing, Ji-Dong-Nuo, Duo Ye and Ba Ban. Her compositions achieve an impressive fusion of Chinese and Western musical idioms, displaying excellent craftsmanship that is original and brilliantly effective. This Treatise comprises five chapters. Chapter One explains the background and significance of this project, as well as its purpose. Chen Yi's own personal and professional background is also introduced in this chapter through references, documented interviews, and personal correspondence. Her musical training, heritage, and cultural influences to her musicianship are vividly explored. Chapter Two is divided into two sections: 1) the musical and historical background of each of Chen Yi's solo piano works chosen for this study, and 2) the background of ancient Chinese musical aesthetics. A brief introduction to each solo piano work highlights its significant compositional background. The survey of essential ancient Chinese musical concepts brings to light the distinct Chinese inspiration in Chen Yi's music. Volume I For centuries, many if not most, classical composers have been aiming to make style innovations that are distinct from their predecessors, as well as forge their own unique, musical identities. This dissertation is, in part, an analysis of representative works by seven important composers of the past 150 years, from the East and from the West, focusing on how each has successfully synthesized Western and Eastern compositional techniques, textures, timbres, and harmonies to create, for their time, fresh, new sounds. One of my main goals was to understand in depth how exoticism works in music, from both cultural vantage points. This monograph illuminates how Claude Debussy, Giacomo Puccini, Gustav Mahler, Igor Stravinsky, Benjamin Britten, Toru Takemitsu, and I-Sang Yun co-mingle Western and Eastern idioms, in each case seeking new musical and expressive meanings, and an expansion of the traditions that they inherited. At times such efforts are quite superficial and are intended to exploit a sensational, exotic effect. However, in most of the cases I give, the relationship of East and West is deep and profound. Especially in the works by Britten, Takemitsu and Yun, the cultural hybridism is much more subtle with much blurring of boundaries. This arises in part from the fact that most Western composers of the late 19th and early 20th century had, at best, a vague and simplistic knowledge of the music of the East and, quite frankly, no real motivation to explore it in depth. They were generally inclined to tap into well-understood stereotypes that their audiences would have easily understood. This starts to change with Debussy and Mahler, who may be among the first Western composers to explore a more intrinsic, and subtle cultural hybridism between East and West. Volume II Rippling Brook is a large scale tone-poem, in part, inspired by Mahler's symphonic song-cycle, Das Lied von der Erde ("The Song of the Earth"). The central motive that winds through the whole piece is a lovely folk song from the Yunan Province of mainland China called Hstao He Tang Sui ("Rippling Brook"). Mahler borrowed ancient Chinese poems to imbue his score with the perfume of Asian culture, making little effort to make the music sound particularly 'Chinese.' However, as we will see there are indeed subtle connections to Chinese musical elements, though hardly of the overt 'exotic' sort of 'chinoiserie' that we will see in the Puccini and the Stravinsky. My 'song of the earth' is a rippling brook, a metaphorical witness of the evolution of humanity, and its at-times devastating impact upon the earth's ecology. To illustrate, I added descriptive texts at important junctures in the musical journey, a kind of running exegesis. Through the composing process, I tried to create a style of work that I had not done before. My orchestral sonorities synergize both Western and Eastern harmonies, timbres, techniques, and textures. I hope that in so doing, I have begun to forge a new and distinctive voice for my music that will be a worthy companion to the great works that I have studied herein.

In the past few decades, however, art education has failed to fulfill its best potential largely because of the polarized debate between the modernists and postmodernists, especially in regard to the question of how the artistic self relates to the spiritual self within the context of a community. In my dissertation, the theoretical and practical possibilities of contemporary art education are explored through comparative studies of Western and Chinese aesthetics and art education theories. Art educators are the agents for change in the field. Thus, my main aim in this dissertation is to examine possibilities, and map out directions that reflect meaning and value in art for the improvement of art teacher education. There is much that Chinese aesthetic theory can contribute to the development of Western art. Similarly, there is much of value that China can learn from Western art. In this respect, an academic visit arranged by the Chinese art educator, Professor Guo, in which my Senior Supervisor Professor Richmond and I visited three national academies of fine art in China in 2003 has become a preliminary cross-cultural dialogue between Western and Chinese art educators. Additionally, ideas and questions which came up for discussion during the academic visit have become a source for my dissertation; one key question is what are the possible solutions for offsetting the impact of globalization on contemporary art and art education? Perhaps, the Chinese concept of 'wholeness' (a vital theme in Chinese philosophy and aesthetics) and the approach of self-cultivation (a core theory in Chinese art and art education) would be potential prescriptions. A positive outcome of the interchange of ideas between Western and Chinese cultural tradition might be to retain the explorative energy of Western art controlled by the internal discipline of Chinese aesthetics with the aim of training oneself to be a good human being by tuning the self to live harmoniously with other people and in hãrmony with the earth within the eternal cosmos.
