However, most of the studies conducted in this area studied the effect of stretching on the force output of the stretched muscles during maximal voluntary contractions. Little is known about the effects of static stretching on reflexive force output of the stretched as well as the non-stretched contralateral homologous muscles. It has been hypothesized mechanical and neural factors contribute to the reduction of force output of the stretched muscles. While the mechanical factors may affect the force output of the stretched muscles, the neural factors may cross the spinal cord and affect force output of the homologous contralateral muscles. The purpose of this study is to determine the acute effects of stretching on the reflexive force output of the contralateral quadriceps muscle during and following the stretching of the homologous muscle of the ipsilateral limb. It was hypothesized that stretching would reduce the force output of the ipsilateral quadriceps muscle group simultaneously resulting to the increased force output of the contralateral quadriceps muscle group due to the reciprocal innervatory pattern of contralateral limbs. Methods: Twelve college-age males participated in this study. Myotatic reflex was induced by striking the patellar tendon of the quadriceps muscle group before, during and after stretching of either contralateral or ipsilateral muscle. Force output of the contralateral quadriceps muscles was recorded through force transducers. The electrical activity of the muscles was recorded through bipolar electrodes placed on the quadriceps and biceps femoris muscles. Results: There was a significant decrease in force output of the ipsilateral limb after stretch (-12% ℗ł 25.2N, p = .021) and there was a significant increase in force output of the contralateral limb during stretch (76% ℗ł 111N, p = .003) and force output returned to pre-stretch level after stretching the ipsilateral QF muscle. Discussion: We believe the cross extensor reflex was responsible for the increase in force output of the contralateral limb during the stretch and for the decrease in force output of the contralateral limb after the stretch.

Book excerpt: Stretching routines are routinely integrated into the rehabilitation programs of injuries requiring immobilization. Static stretching has been promoted as the safest, most effective, and most comfortable method of stretching whereas the diametric opposite ballistic technique has been essentially shunned by the rehabilitation community due to its' correlated risk of injury and patient discomfort. The purpose of this investigation was to examine the kinematics and levels of perceived soreness associated with static and ballistic hamstring stretching to compare for any differences in benefits or drawbacks between the techniques. While both STA and BAL methods of stretching did create gains in forward movement similarly, STA stretching was found to cause significantly more discomfort than BAL stretching, and thus contraindications towards ballistic stretching may be unjustified. Future research should examine these variables controlling for additional and accessory motions as well as examining the kinematics of the actual BAL and STA stretching maneuvers.

The subjects who volunteered for this study were members of Bemidji State University men's and women's NCAA Division II track and field team with a mean age of 20.74 years. Subjects performed vertical jumps following a warm-up with and without a stretching routine. The stretching routine was a lunging hip flexors stretch held for two sets of 30 seconds for each leg. A General Linear Model (GLM) with repeated measure was used to determine significant interaction between routines and gender as well as a main effect for rountine. Results indicated no significant interaction between stretching and gender F(1,23)=2.048, p=0.167, and no main effect for stretching (M=113.91) and non-stretching (M=114.09) protocols for vertical jump, F(1,23=0.335, p=0.569. Results suggest that a static stretch of the hip flexors has no effect on vertical jump height on either gender"--Abstract.

There has been little research investigating the acute effects of static stretching of the antagonist on the expression of strength and power. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of static stretching of the antagonist muscles on a variety of strength and power measures. Sixteen active males were tested for vertical jump height and isokinetic torque production in a slow knee extension (KES) at 60 [degrees]/s and a fast knee extension (KEF) at 300 [degrees]/s. Electromyography was taken during knee extension tests for the vastus lateralis and the biceps femoris muscles. Participants performed these tests in a randomized counterbalanced order with and without prior antagonist stretching. All variables for stretching and non-stretching treatments were compared using paired t tests at an alpha of .05. Paired samples t tests revealed a significant (p = .034) difference between stretch KEF and non-stretch KEF conditions. There was no significant (p> .05) difference between KES stretch and non-stretch conditions. Vertical jump height was significantly (p = .011) higher for the stretching treatment than the non-stretching treatment. Vertical jump power was also significantly higher (p = .005) in the stretch versus the non-stretch condition. Paired samples t test indicated no significant (p> .05) difference between testing conditions for electromyography, represented as a percentage of maximal voluntary contraction (MVC). These results suggest that stretching the antagonist hamstrings prior to high speed isokinetic knee extension increases torque production. It also demonstrated that stretching the hip flexors and dorsi flexors may enhance jump height and power. Practitioners may use this information to acutely enhance strength and power performances.

Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to assess the acute effects of static stretching on foot velocity at impact with a soccer ball. Eighteen Division I female soccer athletes underwent two test conditions separated by 48 hr. Each condition was randomly assigned and began by placing four retro-reflective markers on bony landmarks of the ankle (total of eight markers, four on each ankle). One condition was the no-stretch condition, in which each participant performed a self-paced jog for 5 min as a warm-up, and then sat quietly for 6 min before performing three maximal instep kicks into a net. The second condition was the stretch condition, which was identical to the no-stretch condition, except the participants performed a series of six randomly ordered stretches instead of sitting quietly for 6 min. Three-dimensional motion analysis was used to quantify the resultant velocity of the head of the 5th metatarsal immediately prior to foot impact with a soccer ball. The results of a dependent t test indicated that there was no significant difference between the no-stretch (18.34 " 1.29 m/s) and stretch conditions (17.96 " 1.55 m/s; p = .102, d = .3) Based on these findings, acute stretching performed one time for 30 s before maximal instep soccer kicking has no effect on the resultant foot velocity of Division 1A university female soccer players. Pre-event stretching performed in a like manner may best be prescribed at the discretion of the athlete.

Book excerpt: ABSTRACT: This study compared the acute and long-term effects of intermittent and continuous static stretching training on straight leg raise range of motion (ROM). Seventy-seven preadolescent female gymnasts were divided into a stretching (n=57), and a control group (n=20). The stretching group performed static stretching of the hip extensors of both legs, three times per week for 15weeks. One leg performed intermittent (3×30s with 30s rest) while the other leg performed continuous stretching (90s). ROM pre- and post-stretching was measured at baseline, on weeks 3, 6, 9, 12, 15 and after 2weeks of detraining. ROM was increased during both intermittent and continuous stretching training, but remained unchanged in the control group. Intermittent stretching conferred a larger improvement in ROM compared to both continuous stretching and control from week 3, until the end of training, and following detraining (p=0.045 to 0.001 and d=0.80 to 1.41). During detraining, ROM after the intermittent protocol decreased (p=0.001), while it was maintained after the continuous protocol (p=0.36). Acute increases in ROM following the intermittent stretching were also larger than in the continuous (p=0.038). Intermittent stretching was more effective than continuous, for both long-term and acute ROM enhancement in preadolescent female athletes.
