The $30,000 Bequest and Other Stories (1906) is a collection of thirty comic short stories by the iconic American humorist and writer Mark Twain. The stories contained span the course of his career, from "Advice to Young Girls" in 1865 to the titular tale in 1904. Although Twain had ample time to refine his short stories between their original publication date and this collection, there is little evidence to suggest he took an active interest in doing so.ContentsThe 30,000 Dollar Bequest -- A Dog's Tale -- Was It Heaven? Book excerpt: This book contains a couple of very entertaining short stories, including the one mentioned in the title, along with a great ending about Adam and Eve, as well as a lot of ancedotes about all sorts of things. If you are a fan of Mark Twain, I would highly recommend this collection. The ancedotal material contains a lot of insight into Samuel Clemons, as well as his transition to the writer, Mark Twain. I was much impressed. I found myself thinking of Leno and Carson in regards to a lot of his observations from local papers which he found humorous. Certainly, American humor in general, owes quite a lot to Mark Twain, and this collection is certainly a fine example of that. A great read and a priceless gem for all Twain fans.

Book excerpt: The $30,000 Bequest provides a rare long view of Twain's work, covering virtually his entire career, from "Advice to Young Girls" to the title story, written in 1904. Whether he is probing the dynamics of a marriage in "The $30,000 Bequest," or tapping into the nature of hierarchies of abusive power in "A Dog's Tale," Twain's deft craftsmanship brings energy and life to his prose. The more preposterous his claim, the more diligent his proof--as in "The Danger of Lying in Bed," in which Twain argues--complete with statistics--that lying in bed (where most deaths occur) is more dangerous than traveling. The pieces collected here--alternately playful, poignant, and powerful--are all shaped by Twain's rich and unpredictable imagination. This book, the last miscellany published in his lifetime, captures the many facets of Mark Twain's work. Including.. Book excerpt: This Excellent Collection brings together Mark Twain's longer, major books and a fine selection of shorter pieces and Science-Fiction Books. This Books created and collected in Mark Twain's Most important Works illuminate the life and work of one of the most individual writers of the XX century - a man who elevated political writing to an art. Samuel Langhorne Clemens (November 30, 1835 – April 21, 1910), known by his pen name "Mark Twain", was an American writer, humorist, entrepreneur, publisher, and lecturer. He was lauded as the "greatest humorist the United States has produced," and William Faulkner called him "the father of American literature". His novels include The Adventures of Tom Sawyer (1876) and its sequel, the Adventures of Huckleberry Finn (1884), the latter often called "The Great American Novel". Twain was raised in Hannibal, Missouri, which later provided the setting for Tom Sawyer and Huckleberry Finn. He served an apprenticeship with a printer and then worked as a typesetter, contributing articles to the newspaper of his older brother Orion Clemens. He later became a riverboat pilot on the Mississippi River before heading west to join Orion in Nevada. He referred humorously to his lack of success at mining, turning to journalism for the Virginia City Territorial Enterprise.[5] His humorous story, "The Celebrated Jumping Frog of Calaveras County", was published in 1865, based on a story that he heard at Angels Hotel in Angels Camp, California, where he had spent some time as a miner. The short story brought international attention and was even translated into French.[6] His wit and satire, in prose and in speech, earned praise from critics and peers, and he was a friend to presidents, artists, industrialists, and European royalty. Twain earned a great deal of money from his writings and lectures, but he invested in ventures that lost most of it—such as the Paige Compositor, a mechanical typesetter that failed because of its complexity and imprecision. He filed for bankruptcy in the wake of these financial setbacks, but in time overcame his financial troubles with the help of Henry Huttleston Rogers. He eventually paid all his creditors in full, even though his bankruptcy relieved him of having to do so. Twain was born shortly after an appearance of Halley's Comet, and he predicted that he would "go out with it" as well; he died the day after the comet made its closest approach to the Earth. The generous annotations convey the spirit and essential points of hundreds of books and articles on Twain, making this an important acquisition for every college and university reference collection. Thomas A. Tenney, Editor, Mark Twain Journal Mark Twain, one of the most widely published American authors, has enjoyed immense popularity both in the United States and abroad. A fascinating aspect of this popularity is his wide acclaim in German-speaking countries, which stems not only from his literary accomplishments, but also his numerous visits to Europe and his extended stays in Vienna and Berlin. This book is a comprehensive and extensively annotated bibliography which chronologically surveys Mark Twain's German critical reception from 1875 through 1986. Within each year, items are listed alphabetically by author, and each item is assigned an entry number. English-language annotations accompany each bibliographic citation to assist the reader in ascertaining the flavor and scope of the cited material. Included are monographs, critical texts, reviews, reprints, newspaper articles, dissertations, excerpts from standard literary histories, and introductions and afterwords to editions of his works published in the Federal Republic of Germany, as well as the German Democratic Republic, Austria, and Switzerland. Entries are cross listed, and the volume includes a comprehensive 52-page index. This bibliography provides unique insight into Mark Twain from an often overlooked perspective; it will be of interest to students, scholars, and critics of this great American author, humorist and social critic.
