Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Preaching's Preacher's Guide to the Best Bible Reference "For neither circumcision counts for anything nor uncircumcision, but keeping the commandments of God" (1 Cor 7:19). The apostle Paul's relationship to the Law of Moses is notoriously complex and much studied. Difficulties begin with questions of definition (of the extent of Paul's corpus and the meanings of "the law") and are exacerbated by numerous problems of interpretation of the key texts. Major positions are entrenched, yet none of them seems to know what to do with all the pieces of the puzzle. Inextricably linked to Paul's view of the law is his teaching concerning salvation history, Israel, the church, anthropology, ethics and eschatology. Understanding "Paul and the law" is critical to the study of the New Testament, because it touches on the perennial question of the relationship between the grace of God in the gift of salvation and the demand of God in the call for holy living. Misunderstanding can lead to distortions of one or both. This New Studies in Biblical Theology volume is something of a breakthrough, bringing neglected evidence to the discussion and asking different questions of the material, while also building on the work of others. Brian Rosner argues that Paul undertakes a polemical re-evaluation of the Law of Moses, which involves not only its repudiation as law-covenant and its replacement by other things, but also its wholehearted re-appropriation as prophecy (with reference to the gospel) and as wisdom (for Christian living). Addressing key issues in biblical theology, the works comprising New Studies in Biblical Theology are creative attempts to help Christians better understand their Bibles. The NSBT series is edited by D. A. Carson, aiming to simultaneously instruct and to edify, to interact with current scholarship and to point the way ahead.

Book excerpt: “Partnership involves and saturates every aspect of our society: from business, friendship, churches, political parties and candidates, our favorite sports teams, to marriage. It is a system designed and initiated by God from the very foundations of His creation for our individual and mutual benefit; to provide a means of increasing the resources, abilities, rewards, protection, and provision for the body of Christ as a whole and for every believer individually - far beyond our wildest expectations.” “The very nature of God speaks of multiplication – of exponential increase – of much more than a simple addition. Our agreement through partnership, first with Him, and then with one another is the activator for the manifestation of His multiplication promises. “ “Partnership should be a beautiful romance – a perfect love story. A story not only of love, but also of passion, dedication, support, unselfishness, sacrifice, dignity, integrity, laughter, and joy. It is about building a life together, creating harmony within the differences amongst men so that we can understand the wholeness of God. It is within and through partnership and unity that we see the true reflection of God, and can withstand the attacks of the enemy.” “The information in this book can greatly benefit both Christians and the secular world equally, because the laws of God are immutable. In His Word, God has laid out many “cause and effect” actions that will happen regardless of whether you believe in Him or not, because His word is truth and cannot lie. In regards to partnership, there are many blessings – spiritual laws and principles – that God sets forth that are activated when individuals or businesses partner together with His anointed and appointed ministries.”

Book excerpt: These two ideas are fundamental to the message of the Bible, and yet they are shockingly misunderstood and misapplied. Some take a literal approach to biblical law and adopt customs that make no sense in the modern world. Others think that the law has become irrelevant or, even worse, that it has been abolished and nailed to the cross. They hold this belief in spite of the plain statement by Jesus that the written law would remain as long as heaven and earth last. This suggests that we need to find a new way of looking at biblical law, one that makes sense, that actually helps make life work in the 21st century. Law is about understanding God and his purpose for man. Covenant is closely related because it is about knowing God, personally, intimately, and about being in a relationship with him. Nothing is more central to the Christian relationship with God than the covenant we have with Jesus. In this covenant, you actually carry his name-you are family, with all the rights, privileges and obligations of a brother or a son. Law & Covenant will untangle mysteries and bring simple, understandable insights. Ronald Dart will take you deeper into the Word of God than you've gone before-to a higher logic of the law. He will add an interesting worldview that will make it hard for you to put this book down.

Book excerpt: Although the cry for justice in human society is an important theme in the Bible, in many church and academic circles action for and discourse about social justice is carried on without a thorough exploration of this theme in Scripture. This volume brings together chapters by experts in the various sections of the Old and New Testaments to give a full spectrum of what the Bible has to say about social justice, and to point to ways forward for Christians seeking to think and act in harmony with God in pursuing social justice in the world today.

It examines his many books and speeches in order to provide a comprehensive introduction to his thought in the context of both African American and Jewish contemporaries and precursors. Divided into three thematic sections, History, Law, and Language, the text introduces Ben Ammi's understanding of the nature of God, the responsibilities of the human, and the narrative of history. Ben Ammi was a deeply spiritual but also remarkably modern thinker who blended scientific thought into his evolving socio-theology, while seeking to remove religion from the realm of mythology. The book evaluates how Ben Ammi's theology is one bound to concepts of humility and learning how to go with the grain of the natural world in order to find humanity's true center as a part of nature.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Reformation 21's End of Year Review of Books Preaching's Survey of Bibles and Bible Reference "Who shall ascend the mountain of the LORD?" —Psalm 24:3 In many ways, this is the fundamental question of Old Testament Israel's cult—and, indeed, of life itself. How can creatures made from dust become members of God's household "forever"? The question of ascending God's mountain to his house was likely recited by pilgrims on approaching the temple on Mount Zion during the annual festivals. This entrance liturgy runs as an undercurrent throughout the Pentateuch and is at the heart of its central book, Leviticus. Its dominating concern, as well as that of the rest of the Bible, is the way in which humanity may come to dwell with God. Israel's deepest hope was not merely a liturgical question, but a historical quest. Under the Mosaic covenant, the way opened up by God was through the Levitical cult of the tabernacle and later temple, its priesthood and rituals. The advent of Christ would open up a new and living way into the house of God—indeed, that was the goal of his taking our humanity upon himself, his suffering, his resurrection and ascension. In this stimulating volume in the New Studies in Biblical Theology, Michael Morales explores the narrative context, literary structure and theology of Leviticus. He follows its dramatic movement, examines the tabernacle cult and the Day of Atonement, and tracks the development from Sinai?s tabernacle to Zion's temple—and from the earthly to the heavenly Mount Zion in the New Testament. He shows how life with God in the house of God was the original goal of the creation of the cosmos, and became the goal of redemption and the new creation.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This cogently argued and richly illustrated book rejects the dichotomy between the God of Abraham and the God of the philosophers to argue that the two are one. In God of Abraham, one of our leading philosophers of religion shows how human values can illuminate our idea of God and how the monotheistic idea of God in turn illuminates our moral, social, cultural, aesthetic, and even ritual understanding. Throughout Goodman draws on a wealth of traditional, philosophical, historical, and anthropological materials, and particularly on a wide range of Jewish sources. He demonstrates how an adequate understanding of the interplay of values with monotheism dissolves many of the longstanding problems of natural theology and ethics and guides us toward a genuinely humanistic moral and social philosophy.
