Book excerpt: The development of a large-scale anechoic test facility where large models of engine/airframe/high-lift systems can be tested for both improved noise reduction and minimum performance degradation is described. The facility development is part of the effort to investigate economically viable methods of reducing second generation high speed civil transport noise during takeoff and climb-out that is now under way in the United States. This new capability will be achieved through acoustic modifications of NASA's second largest subsonic wind tunnel: the 40-by 80-Foot Wind Tunnel at the NASA Ames Research Center. Three major items are addressed in the design of this large anechoic and quiet wind tunnel: a new deep (42 inch (107 cm)) test section liner, expansion of the wind tunnel drive operating envelope at low rpm to reduce background noise, and other promising methods of improving signal-to-noise levels of inflow microphones. Current testing plans supporting the U.S. high speed civil transport program are also outlined. Schmitz, F. H. and Allmen, J. R. and Soderman, P. T. Ames Research Center RTOP 505-38-13...

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A basic design study of high-speed subsonic wind tunnel configurations was undertaken to determine the most feasible design for use in fire testing full-scale aircraft powerplants. Three proposed designs were considered; namely, the modification of the facility used at the Indianapolis Technical Development Center, a facility using a motor-driven fan, and a facility using turbojet engines for ejector pumping. Initial costs of construction were compared. The study indicated that a wind tunnel using turbojet engines for ejector pumping as the principal power source would satisfy effectively the requirements for such a fire test facility. Of the designs considered, the induction wind tunnel is recommended as the most economical subsonic fire-test facility from the standpoint of initial cost. (Author).

Book excerpt: In the wind tunnel arrangement under consideration, the air leaves the Laval nozzle as a free jet and is recaptured by the diffuser, which is of the convergent-divergent design. A theoretical analysis of the flow process through this type of supersonic wind tunnel is presented and the diffuser efficiency is calculated for the case of equilibrium between test chamber pressure and pressure in the nozzle exit, assuming one-dimensional, in viscous, steady flow. Using the basic equations of continuity, energy and momentum flux through a bounding surface, an exact solution of the problem is obtained, which is applicable up to Mach number infinite. One of the basic results is, that in the recapturing zone of the diffuser a transition occurs from supersonic to subsonic flow, which is followed by an acceleration in the convergent portion up to sonic velocity at the second throat. The transition is not a normal shock and involves a total pressure loss greater than that of a normal shock at the test section Mach number. A mathematical solution with supersonic velocity after the transition process has no physical existence. A comprehensive comparison of the analytical results with available experiments in supersonic wind tunnels up to Mach number 4.4 regarding diffuser efficiency and second throat area shows good agreement.

This book was released on 2013-07 with total page 24 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Tests were performed on a 1/20th-scale model of the Low Speed Aeroacoustic Wind Tunnel to determine the performance effects of insertion of acoustic baffles in the tunnel inlet, replacement of the existing collector with a new collector design in the open jet test section, and addition of flow splitters to the acoustic baffle section downstream of the test section. As expected, the inlet baffles caused a reduction in facility performance. About half of the performance loss was recovered by addition the flow splitters to the downstream baffles. All collectors tested reduced facility performance. However, test chamber recirculation flow was reduced by the new collector designs and shielding of some of the microphones was reduced owing to the smaller size of the new collector. Overall performance loss in the facility is expected to be a 5 percent top flow speed reduction, but the facility will meet OSHA limits for external noise levels and recirculation in the test section will be reduced.

Book excerpt: This handbook is predominantly structured for subsonic (non- compressible flow), force and moment wind tunnel testing. Its purpose is to provide to the aerodynamic testing engineer equations, concepts, illustrations, and definitions that would aid him or her in wind tunnel testing. The information in this handbook is a living document readily expandable to include personal notes and additional sections. This handbook has not and cannot encompass every wind tunnel testing technique or principle.
