Roy décrit l’enchaînement des événements tragiques qui menèrent la reine à sa perte, depuis l’affaire du collier, une escroquerie montée de toutes pièces, jusqu’à la fuite de Varennes qui acheva de ternir la réputation du couple royal. Suite à un procès éprouvant où régna l’arbitraire, la condamnation à mort, pour haute trahison, fut prononcée le 16 octobre 1793 à 4 heures du matin. Tout comme elle avait vécu, Marie-Antoinette mourut avec dignité. À la lecture de cet ouvrage, on constate que Just-Jean-Étienne Roy était de toute évidence, un grand admirateur de Marie-Antoinette. C’était un monarchiste convaincu. Dans ce livre, il ne cache pas son aversion pour les idéaux révolutionnaires.
