Book excerpt: The primary purpose of this analytical report is to compare tension-tension fatiguing of a carbon fiber composite to tension-compression fatiguing. Although carbon fiber composites hold up well in tension-tension fatiguing, there is little knowledge of the effects of tension-compression cyclic testing, especially in the higher regimes. The composites were fabricated using the vacuum assisted resin transfer molding method, VARTM, and are composed of IM7 four harness satin weave carbon fiber (54% by volume) and Epon 862 with curing agent W (46% by volume). The current research shows that carbon fiber composites are resistant to tension-tension fatiguing. However, when the composite must also endure compressive forces the fatigue life is considerably shorter. The results show that at R-ratios, maximum stress over minimum stress, of 0.1 & -0.1 tension-compression fatiguing will result in a failure three times earlier then tension-tension fatiguing for the same maximum stress value. Microscopy shows the extreme damage that carbon fiber epoxy composites endure during tension-compression fatiguing.

Book excerpt: This study presents the experimental results of time-temperature dependent viscoelastic behavior and cure kinetics of two commercial carbon fiber/epoxy prepregs, IM7/977-2 unidirectional tape (UD) and IM7/977-2 plain weave fabric (PW). An in-depth study on the oscillatory and transient rheological behavior of prepreg composites is conducted using a dynamic mechanical analyzer (DMA) and the study of cure kinetics is conducted using a differential scanning calorimeter (DSC). A novel experimental methodology is proposed in this study to describe the stress relaxation behavior of prepreg composites during cure. Time- and cure-dependent stress relaxation behavior of prepreg composites is studied in three in-plane directions: 0, 45, and 90 degrees of the laminates. Several other factors, such as the mismatch of fiber orientation of adjoining plies, stacking sequence of the laminate, and relative position of the plies with respect to the neutral axis are considered to study their effects on the stress relaxation behavior during cure. The stress relaxation behavior of cured composites is obtained by utilizing the time-temperature superposition (TTS) principle. TTS study on UD laminates (in 0, 45, and 90 degree fiber directions) is conducted at four distinct cure states, whereas the PW laminate is studied in the same fiber directions but at a fully cured state only. Experimental results are used to predict the life cycle of the composite products by generating the stress relaxation master curves for different combinations of fiber orientation and cure states. The study shows that the relaxation modulus during cure is case dependent, which leads to the assumption that the relaxation of process-induced stresses during cure varies for different conditions. Moreover, when comparing the performance of UD and PW prepregs, it shows that the PW laminate relaxes more residual stress than the UD laminate during cure. At cured condition, the PW material shows better long-term mechanical performance than UD material.

Book excerpt: Abstract: The main focus of this thesis is the development of a non-linear, energy dependent fatigue damage model for carbon fiber reinforced plastics (CFRPs). To achieve this task, the fatigue behavior of carbon fiber reinforced plastics was investigated using online stiffness measurments. Existing quasi-static and fatigue models were assessed based on their potential to accurately describe the observed phenomenology. As a result, the proposed, strain damage energy based, fatigue model combines the statistics of an S-N curve with modified versions of the quasi-static strain damage energy model of Ladevèze and the phenomenological fatigue life model of Van Paepegem. All required material parameters were calibrated using quasi-static and constant amplitude loading experiments. To validate the proposed fatigue model, load block experiments were conducted. Those experiments were specially designed pure tension, pure compression and mixed load experiments with constant and changing ratio R. The resualts obtained of the validation experimets are promising. To further understand the fatigue behavior of carbon fiber reinforced plastics and to link the observed stiffness degradation to physical damage mechanisms, destructive and nondestructive characterization methods such as microscopy and X-ray tomography were used. To conclude, this work displays an overview of the damage mechanims, quasi-static and fatigue models for carbon fiber reinforced plastics. It also displays the experimental techniques to conducte fatigue experiments, online measurments and non-destructive characterization methodes. But most importantly it proposes a new promising strain damage energy based fatigue model for carbon fiber reinforced plastics

Book excerpt: The papers contained herein were presented at the Sixth International Conference on Composite Structures (ICCS/6) held at Paisley College, Scotland in September 1991. The Conference was organised and sponsored by Paisley College. It was co-sponsored by Scottish Enterprise, the National Engineering Laboratory, the US Army Research, Development and Standardisation Group-UK, Strathclyde Regional Council and Renfrew District Council. It forms a natural and ongoing progression from the highly successful ICCS/1/2/3/4 and 5 held at Paisley in 1981, 1983, 1985, 1987 and 1989 respectively. As we enter the final decade of this century many organisations throughout the world are adopting a prophetic role by attempting to forecast future scientific advances and their associated impact on mankind. Although some would argue that to do so is folly, without such futuristic visionaries the world would be that much poorer. IntelJigent speculation based on research trends and historical advances, rather than fanciful theories, breathes a healthy air of enthusiasm into the scientific community. Surely this is the very oxygen necessary to ignite the fir~s of innovation and invention amongst pioneers of research.
