Book excerpt: "Gösta Serlachiuksen taidesäätiön taidekokoelmista on julkaistu odotettu kokoelmateos Kymmenen polkua kokoelmaan. Se esittelee kokoelman taidehistoriallisten helmien rinnalla vähemmän tunnettua, yllätyksellistä taidetta eri aikakausilta. Kirja sisältää 170 teoskuvaa ja lähes sata taiteilijaa, joilta on teoksia kokoelmassa. Serlachiusten teollisuussuku aloitti taiteen keräilyn runsaat sata vuotta sitten. Nykyisin tuhansia teoksia käsittävän kokoelman ytimenä ovat klassikkoteokset Suomen taiteen kultakaudelta sekä vanhan eurooppalaisen maalaustaiteen arvoteokset 1500-luvulta lähtien. Kokoelmaa täydentävät niin impressionismin ja varhaisen modernismin maalaukset kuin viime vuosina valikoidusti kartutettu nykytaide kotimaasta ja maailmalta. Kirjan on toimittanut Serlachius-museoiden kokoelmapäällikkö Tarja Talvitie. Asiantuntija-artikkeleita siihen ovat kirjoittaneet Leena Ahtola-Moorhause, Kirsi Eskelinen, Tarja Haikara, Helena Hänninen, Laura Kuurne, Tomi Moisio, Virpi Nikkari, Helena Sederholm, Pauli Sivonen, Tarja Talvitie, Minna Tuominen, Minna Turtiainen, Timo Valjakka ja Nina Zilliacus"--Publisher's website.

Book excerpt: In the Age of Environment, the scale of waste management is geographic all while often relegating such undesired matter to invisibility as "matter out of place." Geographies of Trash reclaims the role of forms, technologies, economies and logistics of the waste system in the production of new aesthetics and politics of urbanism. Honored with a 2014 ACSA Faculty Design Award, the book charts the geographies of trash in Michigan across scales to propose five speculative projects that bring to visibility disciplinary controversies on the relations of technology, space and politics.

Book excerpt: [Winner of the 2016 Bronze medal in Architecture, Independent Publisher Book Awards] This book comprises a series of 22 case studies by renowned experts and new scholars in the field of architecture competition research. In 2015, it constitutes the most comprehensive survey of the dynamics behind the definition, organization, judging, archiving and publishing of architectural, landscape and urban design competitions in the world. These richly documented contributions revolve around a few questions that can be summarized in a two-fold critical interrogation: How can design competitions - these historical democratic devices, both praised and dreaded by designers - be considered laboratories for the production of environmental design quality, and, ultimately, for the renewing of culture and knowledge? Includes 340 illustrations, bibliographical references and index of over 200 cited competitions. Keywords: Architecture / International competitions / Architectural judgment / Design thinking / Digital archiving (databases) / Architectural publications / Architectural experimentation / Landscape architecture / Urban studies

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Akseli Gallen-Kallela (1865-1931) was a true homo universalis, a Renaissance man best known as a painter, but also an important figure in graphic art and an illustrator, and who designed his own live/work studios, furniture and soft furnishings. Over the course of his fin de siecle career, Gallen-Kallela progressed from realistic naturalism towards symbolism and linearity, progress particularly marked in his painted illustrations of the Scandinavian epic the Kalevala, and in sensitive portraits of subjects including Edvard Munch, Maxim Gorky and his friend Jean Sibelius. This long-overdue survey of his work appears on the 75th anniversary of his death, and on the occasion of the Holland Groninger Museum's full-scale retrospective, the first to bring such a large selection of Gallen-Kallela's work out of Scandinavia--and to the world.

Book excerpt: Family Firms (FFs) form the majority of all firms around the world and they account for an enormous percentage of the employment, the revenue, and the GDP of most capitalist countries. While MNCs have long been thought of as the main contributors to international business, it is now recognised that a substantial number of family firms are active in the international arena. This handbook focuses on the features which make family firm internationalization unique. Chapters provide FF specific theories and cover the process of FF internationalization. It examines the role of network ties and provides an insight into the development of family firms that have grown into big multinationals. Importantly this Handbook equips you with a better understanding of specific features of family firms as they internationalize from or to Asian or emerging markets. Family firms offer a fruitful context to study internationalization through a process perspective, therefore this Handbook is an invaluable source of knowledge for students, scholars and policy makers in the areas of family business, entrepreneurship and internationalization.

Book excerpt: "Garmenting: Costume as Contemporary Art centers on contemporary artists' explorations of how dress both expresses and shapes who we are-our personal, cultural, and political identities-and it is my hope that their work will help stimulate discussion and foster understanding during these troubled times. As the quintessential "outside the box" thinkers, artists have always been on the front lines of driving and processing social change; there is a reason cutting-edge art has long been referred to by a military term, "avant-garde." As society rebuilds, artists' insights about our world and how we inhabit it are more necessary than ever"--

Book excerpt: Tracing the cultural, material, and discursive history of an early manifestation of media culture in the making. Beginning in the late eighteenth century, huge circular panoramas presented their audiences with resplendent representations that ranged from historic battles to exotic locations. Such panoramas were immersive but static. There were other panoramas that moved—hundreds, and probably thousands of them. Their history has been largely forgotten. In Illusions in Motion, Erkki Huhtamo excavates this neglected early manifestation of media culture in the making. The moving panorama was a long painting that unscrolled behind a “window” by means of a mechanical cranking system, accompanied by a lecture, music, and sometimes sound and light effects. Showmen exhibited such panoramas in venues that ranged from opera houses to church halls, creating a market for mediated realities in both city and country. In the first history of this phenomenon, Huhtamo analyzes the moving panorama in all its complexity, investigating its relationship to other media and its role in the culture of its time. In his telling, the panorama becomes a window for observing media in operation. Huhtamo explores such topics as cultural forms that anticipated the moving panorama; theatrical panoramas; the diorama; the "panoramania" of the 1850s and the career of Albert Smith, the most successful showman of that era; competition with magic lantern shows; the final flowering of the panorama in the late nineteenth century; and the panorama's afterlife as a topos, traced through its evocation in literature, journalism, science, philosophy, and propaganda.

Book excerpt: Increasingly, the European Union and its member states have exhibited a lack of commitment to protecting the human rights of non-citizens. Thinking beyond the oppressive bordering taking place in Europe requires new forms of scholarship. This book provides such examples, offering the analytical lenses of memory and temporality. It also identifies ways of collaborating with people who experience the violence of borders. Established scholars in fields such as history, anthropology, literary studies, media studies, migration and border studies, arts, and cultural studies offer important contributions to the so-called “European refugee crisis”.

Book excerpt: Hilma af Klint (1862-1944), an artist whose work is still far too unknown to a wider public, eschewed representational painting as early as 1906. Between 1906 and 1915 she produced nearly two hundred abstract paintings, some of which are in monumental formats. Like Wassily Kandinsky, Piet Mondrian, and Kazimir Malevich, who have previously been regarded as the main protagonists of abstract art, Hilma af Klint was influenced by contemporary spiritual movements, such as spiritism, theosophy, and anthroposophy. Her multifaceted imagery strives to provide insight into the different dimensions of existence, where microcosm and macrocosm reflect one another. Hilma af Klint left more than one thousand paintings, watercolors, and sketches. This publication presents her most important abstract works as well as paintings and works on paper that have never before been seen in public, enhancing our understanding of her oeuvre.
