Book Synopsis The Political Economy of Telecommunications Reform in Developing Countries by : Ben Petrazzini
Download or read book The Political Economy of Telecommunications Reform in Developing Countries written by Ben Petrazzini and published by Praeger. This book was released on 1995-10-18 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Based on a policy-making theoretical framework and on the recent experiences of 10 developing countries, this study explores the factors that lead to the success or failure of telecommunications reform. It provides universal conclusions that might help predict the success or failure of telecommunications policies, such as, privatization and liberalization, in other nations that are moving towards reform. This book is an original contribution to our understanding of the rapid and often complex transformations in telecommunications policies. It defies previous assumptions about conditions for success and failure of policy implementation. Although numerous publications deal with telecommunications policy reform in Europe or the United States, little has been written about it in the developing world. This book fills the gap and will be invaluable for academics, policy makers, and others concerned with communications, economic development, and international business.

Book Synopsis The Efficacy of Privatization Policies in the Chilean and Mexican Telecommunications Industries by : Lana Jane Ellis
Download or read book The Efficacy of Privatization Policies in the Chilean and Mexican Telecommunications Industries written by Lana Jane Ellis and published by . This book was released on 1999 with total page 204 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Privatization of the Mexican and Chilean telecommunications industries can provide guidelines for industry restructuring. Specifically, privatization of Compañía de Telecommunicaciones de Chile and Telefonos de Mexico provides two case studies to examine and analyze in assessing the role of privatization with respect to communication and information technologies and services in promoting economic development within lesser-developed countries. A thorough examination of these two approaches will provide a conceptual framework for evaluating the full range of benefits and costs associated with implementation of specific policies contributing to sound telecommunications decisions. This dissertation presents an analytical comparison of privatization of the Chilean and Mexican telecommunications industries, beginning with an overview of the telecommunications industry in developing nations. A discussion of the lessons learned from privatization of telecommunications in other developing nations as well as progress to date will follow. A review of the background of telecommunications privatization and lessons from more-developed nations completes the historical background necessary to frame the remaining topics. An examination of recent developments shows how the pressure for reform is mounting, notably because of technological advancements and the increasingly competitive telecommunications global marketplace. The primary focus of the paper is on identifying policies and practices that will maximize the gains from divestiture. Telefonos de Mexico and Compañía de Telecommunicaciones de Chile are examined in a comparative analysis of the privatization processes and results in Mexico and Chile. An examination of research results includes a discussion of socioeconomic issues and their implications followed by a discussion of policy issues and their implications. The paper ends with a discussion of research limitations and suggestions for further research.
Book Synopsis Financing Information and Communication Infrastructure Needs in the Developing World by :
Download or read book Financing Information and Communication Infrastructure Needs in the Developing World written by and published by World Bank Publications. This book was released on 2005 with total page 58 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over the past ten years, private-sector-led growth has revolutionized access to telecommunications. Every region of the developing world did benefit in terms of investment, and rollout. This revolution would have been impossible without government reform, and oversight. Advanced information and communication infrastructure (ICI) are increasingly important to doing business in a globalizing world. Governments, enterprises, civil society, workers, and poor populations in the developing countries need more affordable access. This report proposes strategies that governments can carry out to attract private investment, and ensure the continued evolution, and spread of information and communication infrastructure. These strategies encompass more than sector policy alone, for investment decisions are based on a wide range of factors including, for example, the roles played by financial sector development, and the broader investment environment. The strategies also include potential public sector investments that can catalyze ICI rollout in sub-sectors where the private sector is not prepared to intervene on its own.
Book Synopsis Privatisation in Developing Countries by : V. V. Ramanadham
Download or read book Privatisation in Developing Countries written by V. V. Ramanadham and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-02-11 with total page 458 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is widely felt that the public sector in many developing countries is too large, and that privatisation would benefit both the users of individual services and the economy in general. However, enthusiasm for private enterprise solutions is not always matched by the requisite financial and economic technology. The sort of schemes appropriate for a country like China, with its highly planned public sector economy, and Jordan, with its dominant private sector, are unlikely to be the same. Privatisation without reference to these differences will be an economic, administrative and organisational chaos rather than a panacea. Originally published in 1989, this book starts with an analysis on the concept, rationale and fundamental issues of privatisation, with reference to both developed and developing countries. There follows a critical scrutiny of the privatisation programmes of countries in Asia, Africa and Latin America, written by contributors actively concerned with public enterprise and privatisation at the time. It examines the role of international aid agencies, including the World Bank, in promoting the schemes and it details the positive impact of them as well as their pitfalls. These country accounts are complemented by a concluding chapter giving an overview of the substantial issues raised.

Book Synopsis Nippon Telegraph and Telephone Privatization Study by : Yoshirō Takano
Download or read book Nippon Telegraph and Telephone Privatization Study written by Yoshirō Takano and published by World Bank Publications. This book was released on 1992 with total page 158 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The privatization (or partial privatization) of Nippon Telegraph & Telephone (NTT) stands as the single largest effort of its kind in history and for that reason alone merits careful attention. The privatization of state-owned telecommunications enterprises has been remarkably global in recent years. Many countries are planning to privatize the sector, hoping to achieve gains in managerial and operational efficiency, provide more responsive service, meet growing demand, generate revenue for government, facilitate the formation of the domestic capital market, and enhance access to the world's capital market. The primary objective of this study is to examine and analyze the process of NTT privatization and changes before and after the privatization. The lessons learned from the study should enable developing countries to carry forward their privatization effort.

The author perceptively identifies contradictions that emerge from the process and outcome of privatisation, and attempts to explain these through a comparative analysis of telecommunications reform in three Central American countries. The result is a carefully researched book that provides new insights into the politics of privatisation. It will be compelling reading for the student and practitioner alike.' - Paul Cook, University of Manchester, UK This book provides a comparative study of the telecommunication reform process in three Central American countries - Costa Rica, Guatemala and Honduras - focusing on the roles of the local private sector and international financial institutions.

Book Synopsis The Logic of Privatization by : Walter Molano
Download or read book The Logic of Privatization written by Walter Molano and published by Praeger. This book was released on 1997-01-14 with total page 160 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Many countries have attempted to employ privatization programs to restructure their economies; however, some of the programs are rejected by the polity in the early stages of consideration. Research on privatization has mainly focused on programs that have been accepted, but it often ignores issues associated with rejection. Dr. Molano breaks new ground by examining the microeconomic, macroeconomic, and political factors that shape all outcomes of privatization. A case study method is employed to review attempts to privatize state-owned telephone companies in countries in the southern cone of Latin America. The study is further generalized to cover 23 attempts to privatize telephone companies from 1985 to 1995.
