Book excerpt: This qualitative case study was designed to discover fifth and sixth grade teachers' and administrators' perceptions related to the middle school transition process relative to the academic, social, and organizational needs of students in a large, suburban school district in Pennsylvania. The participants were teachers of the core academic areas, encore subject teachers, counselors, and administrators at both the elementary and middle school levels. This research examined the results based upon the responses of 48 fifth grade teachers from ten elementary schools, 62 sixth grade teachers from two middle schools, and nine administrators from both elementary and middle schools who completed an online instrument - Perceptions of Transition Survey (POTS). The teacher and administrator POTS survey contained phrases that measured the extent to which they believe students will look forward to, may be worried about, and open-ended questions designed to obtain further teacher and administrator insight regarding the transition to middle school. Results of the study indicated all three groups (5th grade teachers, 6th grade teachers, and administrators) identified student social and academic issues as the defining characteristics of middle school transition. Identifying the consistent and inconsistent messages of school staff members across elementary and middle school buildings may guide future research as school districts strive to provide students with a successful foundation form middle school transitions.

Book excerpt: The purpose of this qualitative study was to examine elementary and middle school teacher and administrator perceptions of variables that impact student transition from elementary school to middle school and to examine elementary and middle school teacher perspectives of student emotional readiness for middle school. A total of 30 educational professional staff, 26 teachers and four administrators, from two semi-rural public school districts in southeastern Pennsylvania completed surveys containing Likert scale questions. Two teachers and two administrators participated in the interview portion of the study to further explore their perceptions about student transition into middle school. The results of this study affirmed the importance of a cohesive transition program for students. The findings of this research identified a majority consistency of 70% between the perspectives of teachers and the perspectives of administrators regarding variables that impact student transition to middle school. Teachers were evenly divided on whether their students were academically prepared for middle school, although, the majority of teachers did not feel their students were behaviorally ready for middle school. Findings identified significant gaps in current transition activities. Response data supported transition activities were void of current crucial social issues facing today's youth. These findings can guide future research for school districts to create comprehensive transition plans to ensure students are given the greatest opportunity for success.

The results of this study concluded that administrators and teachers believed the collaboration between the elementary and middle school is vital for the successful transition of students from the elementary to the middle school. Data indicated that the WEB transition program was successful in reducing the transition anxieties of students as they entered the middle school. Though the WEB transition program is facilitated at the middle school level, the elementary administrators and teachers wanted more information about WEB in order to assist with the transition of the elementary students to the middle school.

Fifty-seven elementary and middle school personnel participated in the study. Individual interviews with 12 participants provided additional insight of their personal perceptions. Results of the study indicated that principals, teachers, and counselors believed that planning, offering, and implementing transition activities are necessary to effect a smooth transition from elementary to middle school. The data revealed that participants believed middle school principals and middle school counselors should have primary responsiblity for planning transition activities. The data also indicated that participants agreed that the overall responsiblity to offer and facilitate transition activities belonged to both the elementary and middle schools. The research findings also suggested that when there is collaboration, communication and shared responsibility between elementary and middle schools, students are better prepared for a smooth transition to their new environment both academically and socially.

There were 5 suburban school districts in Southeastern Pennsylvania that participated in the study that had one or more middle schools feeding into a high school. Data were collected using two researcher designed survey instruments. The instruments included Likert-style tables, open-ended questions, and scripted interview questions, which were reviewed by an expert panel. A total of 32 teachers and 6 administrators took part in the research study. Of the participants, 3 teachers and 2 administrators also volunteered to take part in a phone interview. The results of the study showed that while participants could identify components of the middle school model, they lacked knowledge of This We Believe, which laid the foundation for the philosophy and structure of the middle school. Additionally, participants also believed that the components of the middle school, outlined in This We Believe, were generally important in transitioning students to high school. However, when the components of the middle school were combined with practical experience, the results lacked definitive effectiveness showing a possible lack of implementation or draws questions about how much middle schools embrace the components. Regardless, more research is needed to determine if the range of implementation impacts the effectiveness in preparing students for high school.

While there is significant research into how both impact student success, there is a paucity of research into what teachers perceive parents believe are the expectations and concerns of their child as they transition to middle school. The purpose of this study was to use descriptive statistics obtained from surveys to explore what parents believed were the expectations and concerns of their child regarding the upcoming transition to middle school. Additionally, the study examined what teachers perceived parents believed their child's expectations and concerns were as they were about to transition to middle school. Finally, a comparison was done to find similarities and differences between the two groups. A survey was administered to 72 parents attending a new school orientation for incoming middle school students at a small rural school in Ohio. The same survey was administered to 16 middle school teaching staff members from the school the students would be attending. Parents and teachers identified both perceived academic and social concerns of children about to enter middle school. This included concerns such as getting good grades and having hard teachers as well as participating in social events and extracurricular activities. Both parents and teachers tended to have a holistic view of the identified items of excitement and worry concerning the transition to middle school. This indicated there was no major focus on overall academic or social concerns regarding the transition to middle school but rather a concern for the overall wellbeing of the student which is an important factor in establishing a successful school climate and dealing with the stresses faced by middle school students today.

Book excerpt: The impact that a year of dynamic changes, including the transition to a middle school configuration, had on the perceptions of teachers about the overall climate of the school was examined in a qualitative case study. Interviews and observations were employed to gather information about the changing attitudes of faculty members as they faced new challenges that came along with the new school. Observations were used to solidify the interviewees' responses. The year of transition was marked by a steady decline in staff morale and a negative perception of school climate by the majority of teachers. Although there were hosts of contributing factors, based on the data, the primary reasons for the poor climate originated at the school level. These problems included poor administrative support and communication and a general lack of trust among teachers and administrators when making decisions for the welfare of the school. The primary finding was a distinct need for school leaders to reevaluate the ways they interact with the teaching staff. Recommendations include being more visible and accessible, cutting down on unnecessary reassignments, recognizing ideas and good teaching practices, communicating openly, and reinstating the team teaching approach to foster relationships and enhance teaching abilities.

During this transition, declines in academic motivation, academic achievement, and connectedness have been noted. Most research on this transition has taken place in public school settings. This research investigated the impact of the middle school transition in a private school setting. This study examined students' perceptions of the middle school transition as it related to the connectedness students perceived to their new school, those individuals whom students perceived as most helpful during their transition, academic motivation and achievement following the transition, and perceived helpfulness of transition activities conducted by the school. In addition, the study examined significant differences of the transition experience based on gender and race. Five hundred and two private middle school students in 35 private schools in Virginia completed a paper and pencil survey in which they responded to 47 questions regarding their transition into middle school. It was found that students generally felt connected to middle school, and the number of extracurricular activities in which a student participated did not appear to correlate significantly with connectedness. Most new middle school students did not perceive their transition experience as difficult. Middle school teachers, parents and friends appeared to be the most helpful to students during their transition. As compared to elementary school, newly transitioned middle school students were more academically motivated, and academic achievement showed a slight improvement in middle school. Students reported that visits made to the middle school as an elementary student were most helpful to their transition, and that the summer orientation and tour were also found to be helpful. Males perceived parents, middle school teachers and elementary school counselors as more helpful to their transition than did females, who considered friends most helpful. Parents were perceived as most helpful to the transition by Asian students. Caucasians reported higher academic achievement in middle school than African American students, and African American students perceived their academic achievement as higher than that of Hispanic students. African American students, more than any of the other groups represented, believed that the information given to the middle school by the elementary school was very helpful to their transition. Native American students, and students identifying their race as "Other" felt that the assignment of an older middle school buddy was more helpful to the transition than did Caucasian or Hispanic students. In terms of the relative contribution of the variables to the prediction of ease of transition, the number of transition activities has the greatest influence, followed by level of support from others, perception of connectedness to middle school, and middle school academic performance.

Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to determine to what extent transition practices are used in identified Iowa public middle level schools, and why schools using those practices have selected them. This investigation used a mixed methodological approach, employing both quantitative and qualitative methods. The signature middle school practices of interdisciplinary teaming, advisor/advisee programming, and exploratory programming were examined by the use of transition practices used to acclimate parents and students coming from the elementary to the new middle level school. Additionally, the number of transition practices implemented for students and for parents was examined by (a) enrollment size of grade entering the middle level school, (b) the number of feeder schools, (c) the percentage of students qualifying for free or reduced lunches, and (d) having multiple middle level schools in the district. A sample of 118 Iowa public middle level principals who met predetermined criteria were asked to complete a Transition Practices Inventory to determine what, if any, transition practices were used in their schools as well as their levels of use. Of the 118 principals, 72 responded. Significant findings included: (a) schools that most fully implemented the three signature middle school practices had higher levels of implementation of both parent and student transition practices, (b) higher levels of implementation of parent practices were reported by middle level schools in districts with multiple middle level schools, (c) schools with higher student enrollment at the entering grade employed higher levels of implementation of parent practices, and (d) middle level schools with multiple elementary feeder schools reflected higher levels of implementation of both student and parent transition practices. Analysis of responses to the transition practices instrument identified four middle level schools in which the principals reported using a high number of transition practices. These principals participated in qualitative interviews to further analyze their use of transition practices. Findings from the qualitative interviews included high levels of communication between the elementary and middle level schools, consistency in spring orientation visits, but wide variances in other types of transition activities, and little use of data to inform transition practices.
