Book excerpt: Abstract: The present study investigates whether teacher perceptions of students' cognitive skills, their learning motivation, and their classroom behavior differ according to students' socioeconomic status, immigrant background, and gender. Data from N = 4746 German fourth graders and data from their parents and teachers were analyzed using structural equation modeling. Controlling for student achievement as measured in a standardized achievement test and student motivation as measured by student and parent reports, we found that teachers overestimated the cognitive skills of high-SES students and girls in comparison to those of low-SES students and boys. Similarly, teachers perceived high-SES students, students who are not from an immigrant background, and girls as having a higher learning motivation and as having more cognitive skills. Book excerpt: The purpose of this study is to identify students' and teachers' perceptions about what motivates and engages students in the classroom, one of the biggest challenges facing teachers today. The survey focused on the use of instructional strategies, students' relationships with teachers and peers, and classroom environment. The targeted population was sixth through twelfth grade students and teachers at two different school sites. Online surveys were used to collect data from students and teachers in a school district in Wyoming regarding their perceptions about what motivates and engages students in the classroom. Different sub-scales were developed including instructional strategies, student/teacher relationships, classroom atmosphere, teacher expectations, and goals/motivation theory. Data from the surveys were analyzed, including comparisons between student and teacher responses. Conclusions suggest the most significant factor related to motivation and engagement of students in the classroom is building positive relationships with students. Findings also indicate instructional strategies that allow students to take an active role and collaborate with their peers were considered by students and teachers to be more motivating and engaging than those in which students are not active participants. Implications for practice include an emphasis on relationship building, creating a culture for learning where expectations are clear and realistic, students perceive they are liked and treated fairly, and teachers utilize instructional strategies that allow students to collaborate.
