Book excerpt: A memorial to one of the greatest coaches in college football history written by the man who knew him better than anyone: his oldest son and coaching protégé This biography of Joe Paterno by his son Jay is an honest and touching look at the life and legacy of a beloved coaching legend. Jay Paterno paints a full picture of his father's life and career as well as documenting that almost none of the horrific crimes that came to light in 2012 took place at Penn State. Jay Paterno clear-headedly confronts the events that happened with cool facts and with passion, demonstrating that this was just one more case of an innocent man convicted by the media for a crime in which he had no part. Noting that the scandal itself was but a short moment in Joe Paterno's life and legacy, the book focuses on Paterno's greatness as a father and grandfather, his actions as a miraculous coach to his players, and his skillful dealings with his assistant coaches. Available in paperback for the first time, this updated edition provides readers Jay Paterno's perspective on the latest developments at Penn State.

Book excerpt: Texas oil millionaire Lamar Hunt’s pursuit of a professional football franchise led to the formation of a new league and ultimately a revolutionary change in the pro game itself. Hunt’s new team, the Dallas Texans, began play in the American Football league in 1960, and following the 1962 season, moved to Kansas City. They were renamed the Chiefs, and one of football’s great success stories was established. This chronicle of the history of the Kansas City Chiefs franchise covers everything—its beginning in Dallas with head coach Hank Stram, the great 1962 AFL championship game, the move to Kansas City, the AFL’s merger with the NFL, the team’s disappointing loss to the Green Bay Packers in Super Bowl I, the magnificent victory over the Minnesota Vikings in Super Bowl IV, the down-and-out years, and the return to the playoffs under Dick Vermeil. All historical moments, players, games, and coaches are included. This newly revised encyclopedia offers statistics and biographies for each and every player that has been part of the Kansas City Chiefs. Included within is a foreword by former player Otis Taylor. The Kansas City Chiefs Encyclopedia includes hundreds of photos of players, game action, stadiums, and more. The complete reference book on the Chiefs, the encyclopedia is a book that all true Kansas City fans must have.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The popularity and globalization of sport have led to an ever-increasing migration of black athletes from the global South to the United States and Western Europe. While the hegemonic ideology surrounding sport is that it brings diverse people together and ameliorates social divisions, sociologists of sport have shown this to be a gross simplification. Instead, sport and its narratives often reinforce and re-create stereotypes and social boundaries, especially regarding race and the prowess and the position of the black athlete. Because sport is a contested terrain for maintaining and challenging racial norms and boundaries, the black athlete has always impacted popular (white) perceptions of blackness in a global manner. The Black Migrant Athlete analyzes the construction of race in Western societies through a study of the black African migrant athlete. Munene Franjo Mwaniki presents ten black African migrant athletes as a conceptual starting point to interrogate the nuances of white supremacy and of the migrant and immigrant experience with a global perspective. By using celebrity athletes such as Hakeem Olajuwon, Dikembe Mutombo, and Catherine Ndereba as entry points into a global discourse, Mwaniki explores how these athletes are wrapped in social and cultural meanings by predominately white-owned and -dominated media organizations. Drawing from discourse analysis and cultural studies, Mwaniki examines the various power relations via media texts regarding race, gender, sexuality, class, and nationality.

Book excerpt: The Penn State Football Button Book celebrates the coaching legacy of Joe Paterno and the glorious history of Nittany Lion football during the Paterno era. It does so, however, in a style unlike any other football book ever written -- through the use of the complete collection of "game day" booster buttons produced by Citizens Bank (and its predecessor bank sponsors) to commemorate each Penn State football game played over the past 32 years. The Penn State Football Button Book evokes exciting memories of the Paterno era using button images and unique and fun commentary rather than traditional game summaries. Book jacket.
