Book excerpt: In recent years, a considerable amount of research has examined the emotional effects on children with chronic or life threatening illness. However, very little research has concentrated on the social impact on the carers of children who require long term care. This study examines the topic "Talking to CF Mums", in an endeavour to understand the experiences of mothers who care for people with Cystic Fibrosis (CF). This is a qualitative phenomenological study that uses personal biographies, drawn from in-depth interviews, to examine the experience of the mothers. Multiple biographies, identified by Strauss and colleagues, have been used as a framework to present the experiences of the women in this study. The primary focus of this study is to record and interpret the reality of the way in which being the mother of a person with CF, the carer experience, impacts on her life. Mothers as carers are subjected to a range of stresses in their efforts to come to terms with the diagnosis of their CF child. Their lives change forever, as do their relationships with the people around them. Mothers use a rnage of coping strategies in their daily lives to overcome the stress they experience. Changes brought about by the diagnosis of a genetically inherited condition that is not physically visible, but that is life long and life threatening, are extremely stressful. Problems that arise because of lack of access to information from professionals caring for their children add to the difficultires parents experience. This study recommends that the carer's experiences of anomalies in communication and understanding between parents and professionals must be addressed to share the power of ownership of information that will reassure parents that they are valued as part of the team caring for the child.

Book excerpt: The Hispanic population is the fastest growing minority in the United States and is also a minority in the cystic fibrosis (CF) community. Therefore, an increase in CF in the U.S. might be anticipated. This study explored stories of Hispanic mothers’ perspectives of parenting their child with CF, health beliefs, and health care experiences. The study interviewed 10 mothers of which half were English speaking. Narrative structural and thematic analyses were applied through a critical feminist lens. The major themes that emerged were mothering, growing and growth, mother talk, and connected; all informed by Ruddick’s (1995) framework on maternal thinking. Additional major themes were life disrupted and being here. Findings were consistent with existing literature of the dominant Euro-American culture of being a mother of a child with CF. Health beliefs specific to CF care were aligned with prescribed medical treatments. Language emerged as a primary barrier for Spanish-speaking mothers. Mothers acknowledged an existing lack of awareness of CF in the Hispanic community and as underrepresented within the larger CF community. They expressed a desire to see a shift of stereotyped Caucasian images of CF to represent Hispanic people to promote greater awareness in the Hispanic communities and with health care providers.

The method is utilized in several disciplines sharing an interest in social interaction, like anthropology, linguistics, social psychology, and sociology, and it has been applied to a great variety of languages and types of interaction. Conversation Analysis then is coming of age as a truly comparative enterprise. This volume presents and discusses comparative approaches to analyzing interactional practices and structures. The contributors to the volume have their background in sociology, linguistics, and logopedics. They offer comparative analyses of activity types, participant roles and identities, displays of emotion, and design of actions such as questions and corrections. The languages covered by the chapters include English, Finnish, German, and Swedish. This volume is of interest to all those interested in the research of language and social interaction. Because of its methodological nature, the book can also be utilized in teaching and in learning the discovery procedures typical of Conversation Analysis.

Book excerpt: With its unparalleled coverage of English slang of all types (from 18th-century cant to contemporary gay slang), and its uncluttered editorial apparatus, Cassell's Dictionary of Slang was warmly received when its first edition appeared in 1998. 'Brilliant.' said Mark Lawson on BBC2's The Late Review; 'This is a terrific piece of work - learned, entertaining, funny, stimulating' said Jonathan Meades in The Evening Standard. But now the world's best single-volume dictionary of English slang is about to get even better. Jonathon Green has spent the last seven years on a vast project: to research in depth the English slang vocabulary and to hunt down and record written instances of the use of as many slang words as possible. This has entailed trawling through more than 4000 books - plus song lyrics, TV and movie scripts, and many newspapers and magazines - for relevant material. The research has thrown up some fascinating results

Book excerpt: This study presents a new perspective on small talk and its crucial role in everyday communication. The new approach presented here is supported by analyses of interactional data in specific settings - private and public, face-to-face and telephone talk. They vary from gossip at the family dinner table and intimate 'keeping in touch' phone conversations, to interpersonally-focused talk in institutional settings, such as the government office and the university research seminar. Drawing on a range of methodological approaches, including Discourse Analysis and Pragmatics, Interpersonal Communication and Conversation Analysis, the author elevates small talk to a new status, as functionally multifaceted, but central to social interaction as a whole.

This volume addresses, specifically, the English used in Singapore in the private and public domains, particularly the school system. The topics covered include: an overview of earlier studies and attempts at codification; a consideration of whether the formal mode of written Singapore English should be standardised; the problems of pronounciation; etc. and specific lexico-grammatical problems which have proved to be ambiguous for those not familiar with Singapore English. Also included in this volume is the largest bibliography so far published on Singapore English with over 700 titles listed, thus providing an essential tool for any future research.

Does it destroy imagination, provode delinquency and violence, undermine family life and have other detrimental effects on children?; The author, himself a parent, teacher and researcher investigates the complex ways in which children actively make meaning and take pleasure from television. Chapters cover the popular debates about children and television from a general and academic perspective. The characteristics of children's talk about television are explored, as children interact with other children and other family members in "family viewing" sessions.; Key concepts which inform children's talk about television are investigated i. e. genre, narrative, character, modality, and agency. Finally, conclusions are presented and issues outlined for further research.; Drawing on theories and ideas developed within media and cultural studies, English, education, psychology, sociology, linguistics and other related areas, this book will be useful to both students and teachers in the field, and to the general reader with an interest in children and the media.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Teenage talk is fascinating, though so far teenage language has not been given the attention in linguistic research that it merits. The dearth of investigations into teenage language is due in part to under representation in language corpora. With the Bergen Corpus of London Teenage Language (COLT) a large corpus of teenage language has become available for research. The first part of Trends in Teenage Talk gives a description how the COLT corpus was collected and processed; the speakers are presented with special emphasis on the recruits and their various backgrounds; ending with a description what the COLT teenagers talk about and how they do it. The second part of the book is devoted to the most prominent features of the teenagers’ talk: ‘slanguage’; how reported speech is manifested; a survey of non-standard grammatical features; the use of intensifiers; tags; and interactional behaviour in terms of conflict talk.
