Book excerpt: Casey Hoghupper, a six-year veteran police officer working LAPD’s Seventy-Seventh Division has a secret. She has a guardian angel that no one else can see or hear but her. The problem is the other officers in her division only see her “talking out loud” when no one else is present. Question: Is the stress of the job causing her to lose her mind? The captain of her division, along with city psychologist Althea Bianchi are tasked with finding out if she is still fit to “protect and to serve” the citizens of Los Angeles. Evaluating Casey Hoghupper wouldn’t be easy for Dr. Bianchi since Casey herself has earned a BA degree in psychology from renowned Vassar College in Poughkeepsie, New York. The two would go head-to-head during their office visit, and later after spending only one night as an observer during Hoghupper’s Watch-3 shift. Dr. Bianchi becomes even more convinced that she should be relieved of her police powers and retired to civilian life. Aside from several appearances by her guardian angel, Casey’s demeanor as a police officer has always been completely above board, professional, and by the book. And thanks to Seventy-Seventh Division captain Howard Carver, Dr. Bianchi would end up more or less falling on her own sword. In an effort to escape some of the stigma given to her by her fellow police officers, Casey puts in for a transfer to another division, and soon finds herself working Hollywood Division. Hollywood is the place elitists like to refer to as the “entertainment capital of the world,” but to the Hollywood coppers who work there, it’s the land of “fruits and nuts.” Casey realizes that whoever coined the phrase “being a cop in LA is like having a ringside seat to the greatest show on earth” was on point. But now, working Hollywood Division, it was time to “send in the clowns.” After another visit from her guardian angel, Casey Hoghupper thwarts the mass murder of over twenty people who were staying at the Hollywood Gay Dream Motel on a chilly Christmas Eve. Her quick actions made it possible for all the guests to flee the motel just minutes before it is leveled and burned to the ground by a murderer’s homemade bomb. Casey Hoghupper teams up with Det. Marrisa Ortega, and together they go on the hunt to track down the suspect who planted the bomb, if for no other reason than to hide the murder of the man named John Smith in room 12. This story will have you crying, laughing, and rooting for cops who have to deal not only with the Hollywood eccentrics, but the streetwise criminals and those within the LAPD’s ivory tower.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Most contemporary philosophers, psychologists, and linguists think of language as basically a means by which speakers reveal their thoughts to others. Christopher Gauker calls this "the Lockean theory of language," since Locke was one of its early exponents, and he contends that it is fundamentally mistaken. The Lockean theory, he argues, cannot adequately explain the nature of the general concepts that words are supposed to express. In developing this theme, Gauker investigates a wide range of topics, including Locke's own views, contemporary theories of conceptual development, the nature of reference and logical validity, the nature of psychological explanation, and the division of epistemic labor in society. The Lockean theory contrasts with the conception of language as the medium of a distinctive kind of thinking. Gauker explains how language, so conceived, is possible as a means of cooperative interaction. He articulates the possibility and objectivity of a kind of non-conceptual thinking about similarities and causal relations, which allows him to explain how a simple language might be learned. He then takes on the problem of logical structure and gives a formally precise account of logical validity formulated in terms of "assertibility in a context" rather than in terms of truth. Finally, he describes the role that attributions of belief and meaning play in facilitating cooperative interaction. With lucid and persuasive arguments, his book challenges philosophers, psychologists, linguists, and logicians to rethink their fundamental assumptions about the nature of language. It is written by a middle-aged man who has learned to accept and “listen” to his intuition. This is something all of us can do if we are shown how. The content herein is surprising, sometimes challenging, and most of all, refreshing. There are no advanced college degrees to earn your trust. There is however, integrity and a source of energy that is beyond the typical author’s claim to expertise. With an open heart and mind you will be very surprised with the awareness and understanding you will gain. The sole purpose of this book is to intrigue you to become in tune with your higher self. This does not come with an involvement of any religion, but rather through a much more personal knowing. If you choose, you will become aware of your higher energy.

Book excerpt: USE VERBAL PROMPTS AND PRACTICES TO BECOME THE PERSON YOU WANT TO BE When wellness star Vasavi Kumar suggests “saying it out loud,” she means it literally. Years of journaling in an attempt to learn about herself and meet her goals hadn’t worked, so she decided to talk to herself instead, out loud and with the compassion of a best friend. She used this technique as she journeyed through the challenges of being the daughter of Indian immigrants, a bipolar diagnosis, substance abuse, and recovery. Along the way, Vasavi learned that all the outside expert guidance in the world was no substitute for finding ways of tuning in to her truest inner self, hearing that self’s guidance and wisdom, and then living it with resilience and empathy. In Say It Out Loud, she gives simple verbal prompts to help you voice your deepest desires and reframe negative self-talk so you can heal from past experiences, go after your dreams, and become more intentional, focused, and compassionate.

Welcome to Shiver-de-Freeze, a boot-shaped precinct deep in the Louisiana swamp, famous for its healing waters and curious fauna. Grisham Loudermilk is marrying Ariane Thevenot at Paradise, the family’s ancestral home, and we're here for the wedding. But reason and love, it would seem, keep little company in Paradise these days: Grisham’s cousin Adlai Birdsong has fallen desperately in love with the bride-to-be. Adlai’s ill-advised courtship proceeds even as his daddy, Royce, struggles to recall his past in the face of Alzheimer’s; as Father Pat McDermott realizes his passion for the mother of the bride; as the conjoined twins, Tous-les-Deux, train their eyes on Boudou Fontana, the last of the star-crossed Fontana clan. And just when it seems that Adlai must resign himself to a prolonged season of bachelorhood, Miranda Ferry, Grisham’s recent lover, wanders into town unawares. With his signature tragic-comic voice and cast of unforgettable and lively characters, Dufresne explores love, death, imagination, and memory. Reading group guide available.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This revised second edition presents 15 years of data on Virtual Distance metrics and their predictive impact on organizational success factors shedding new light on how to correct for communication challenges that often show up as a foggy set of digital disconnects where the vitality of the virtual workforce often gets lost in transmission. This still-evolving Digital Age conundrum continues to present new complications. The rise of remote work which rests on an increasing reliance on electronic communication and the overall growth of virtual interactions has led to the escalation of a phenomenon called Virtual Distance. Virtual Distance, which influences our behavior through three components Physical Distance, Operational Distance, and Affinity Distance affects not only how we relate to others thousands of miles away but even to co-workers sitting right next to each other! Perhaps even more problematic, Virtual Distance causes measureable malfunctions in teamwork, innovation, leader effectiveness and overall performance. But it doesn’t have to be this way. The Power of Virtual Distance offers specific, proven and predictable solutions that can reverse these trends and turn Virtual Distance into a unification strategy to capture untapped competitive advantage. Surprised? The Power of Virtual Distance, 2nd Edition is a must-read for leadership who want to understand the true and quantifiable costs of the virtual workplace. For the first time ever, readers can take the guesswork out of managing the virtual workforce by applying a mathematical approach derived from the extensive Virtual Distance data set: The Virtual Distance Ratio. The Virtual Distance Ratio can precisely pinpoint the particular impacts of Virtual Distance on the organization’s critical success factors. Beyond business metrics, Virtual Distance solutions also detail ways to restore meaningfulness and well-being into people’s experience of work, enhancing life lived in the Digital Age. The Power of Virtual Distance reveals an updated set of data, including the first award-winning analysis, collected from an extended range of executives to individual contributors, that represent situations and solutions in more than 36 industries in 55 countries across the globe. Readers will get a “first look” at the data and its revelations on how to be less isolated and more integrated. Helping managers globally, this book: Offers new, real-world case studies and a chance for readers to participate in thought experiments to help with personal performance, group synergy and by extension, relationship dynamics of all kinds Demonstrates (with statistically significant trend analyses) that Virtual Distance is growing at exponential rates in every corner of communities worldwide Offers expert advice on how to manage the “unintended human consequences” of today’s digital technologies Companies that successfully harness the power of Virtual Distance demonstrate better performance. The second edition of The Power of Virtual Distance is a valuable, one-of-a-kind resource for everyone – from the C-suite to human resource professionals; from divisional leaders to project managers. Everyone in the organization can benefit by discovering how to improve financials, innovation, trust, employee engagement, satisfaction, organizational citizenship and other key performance indicators. And perhaps best of all, by following the prescriptions on how to reduce Virtual Distance, the entire workforce will have the tools they need to bring about a revival of meaning, purpose and an enlivened sense of “humanhood” back into everyday work and everyday life.
