Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Not long after research began at RAND in 1946, the need arose for random numbers that could be used to solve problems of various kinds of experimental probability procedures. These applications, called Monte Carlo methods, required a large supply of random digits and normal deviates of high quality, and the tables presented here were produced to meet those requirements. This book was a product of RAND's pioneering work in computing, as well a testament to the patience and persistence of researchers in the early days of RAND. The tables of random numbers in this book have become a standard reference in engineering and econometrics textbooks and have been widely used in gaming and simulations that employ Monte Carlo trials. Still the largest published source of random digits and normal deviates, the work is routinely used by statisticians, physicists, polltakers, market analysts, lottery administrators, and quality control engineers. A 2001 article in the New York Times on the value of randomness featured the original edition of the book, published in 1955 by the Free Press. The rights have since reverted to RAND, and in this digital age, we thought it appropriate to reissue a new edition of the book in its original format, with a new foreword by Michael D. Rich, RAND's Executive Vice President

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fundamentals of Statistics covers topics on the introduction, fundamentals, and science of statistics. The book discusses the collection, organization and representation of numerical data; elementary probability; the binomial Poisson distributions; and the measures of central tendency. The text describes measures of dispersion for measuring the spread of a distribution; continuous distributions for measuring on a continuous scale; the properties and use of normal distribution; and tests involving the normal or student's ‘t’ distributions. The use of control charts for sample means; the ranges and fraction defective; the chi-squared distribution; the F distribution; and the bivariate distributions are also considered. The book deals with the idea of mathematical expectation and its relationship with mean, variance, and covariance, as well as weighted averages, death rates, and time series. Students studying for advanced level education or higher national certificates in Mechanical or Electrical Engineering, Mathematics, Chemistry, Biology, or Pharmacy, as well as university students taking such courses will find the book invaluable.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Survey Sampling Theory and Applications offers a comprehensive overview of survey sampling, including the basics of sampling theory and practice, as well as research-based topics and examples of emerging trends. The text is useful for basic and advanced survey sampling courses. Many other books available for graduate students do not contain material on recent developments in the area of survey sampling. The book covers a wide spectrum of topics on the subject, including repetitive sampling over two occasions with varying probabilities, ranked set sampling, Fays method for balanced repeated replications, mirror-match bootstrap, and controlled sampling procedures. Many topics discussed here are not available in other text books. In each section, theories are illustrated with numerical examples. At the end of each chapter theoretical as well as numerical exercises are given which can help graduate students. Covers a wide spectrum of topics on survey sampling and statistics Serves as an ideal text for graduate students and researchers in survey sampling theory and applications Contains material on recent developments in survey sampling not covered in other books Illustrates theories using numerical examples and exercises

Book excerpt: Kendall's Advanced Theory of Statistics and Kendall's Library of Statistics The development of modern statistical theory is reflected in the history of the late Sir Maurice Kenfall's volumes, The Advanced Theory of Statistics. This landmark publication began life as a two-volume work and grew steadily as a single-authored work until the 1950s. In this edition, there is new material on skewness and kurtosis, hazard rate distribution, the bootstrap, the evaluation of the multivariate normal integral and ratios of quadratic forms. It also includes over 200 new references, 40 new exercises, and 20 further examples in the main text.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sample design is key to all surveys, fundamental to data collection, and to the analysis and interpretation of the data. Introduction to Survey Sampling, Second Edition provides an authoritative and accessible source on sample design strategies and procedures that is a required reading for anyone collecting or analyzing survey data. Graham Kalton discusses different types of probability samples, stratification (pre and post), clustering, dual frames, replicates, response, base weights, design effects, and effective sample size. It is a thorough revision and update of the first edition, published more than 35 years ago. Although the concepts of probability sampling are largely the same, there have been important developments in the application of these concepts as research questions have increasingly spanned multiple disciplines, computers have become central to data collection as well as data analysis, and cell phones have become ubiquitous, but response rates have fallen, and public willingness to engage in survey research has waned. While most of the volume focuses on probability samples, there is also a chapter on nonprobability samples, which are becoming increasingly important with the rise of social media and the world wide web.

Book excerpt: Written for students taking research methods courses, this text provides a thorough overview of sampling principles. The author gives detailed, nontechnical descriptions and guidelines with limited presentation of formulas to help students reach basic research decisions, such as whether to choose a census or a sample, as well as how to select sample size and sample type. Intended for students and researchers in the social and behavioral sciences, public health research, marketing research, and related areas, the text provides nonstatisticians with the concepts and techniques they need to do quality work and make good sampling choices.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This classic table of random numbers for use in statistical probability experiments, one of the first, was prepared in the precomputer days of 1947 using the specially built electronic equivalent of a 32-place roulette wheel. Fourteen RAND mathematicians, engineers, and computing pioneers participated in the planning, testing, and rerandomizing of the tables and in preparing for publication. The two tables, one of a million random digits and one of 100,000 Gaussian deviates, were photoreproduced from IBM 856 Cardatype printout. An introduction explains their derivation and statistical properties and gives directions for use. Although large simulation studies now generate their own random numbers, the RAND tables remain useful for smaller-scale work and hand calculations; they are much used in agricultural research. As of September 1971, [A Million Random Digits] was in its third printing, and nearly 7000 copies had been sold. (Published by The Free Press, 1955. Available only from booksellers or the publisher, or as a RAND Reprint.) 225 pp.
