Book excerpt: Excerpt from Systematic Arrangement of Australian Fungi: Together With Host-Index and List of Works on the Subject There can be no doubt that many of the Fungi on our native vegetation will attack introduced plants, and it would be very desirable, both in the interests of science and of practical utility, to have a record of the Fungi preying upon our native plants. I have seen some of our richest soils with the decaying roots of Eucalypts and the mycelium of Fungi passing from them to the roots of orchard trees and causing their decay. The Host-index should serve various useful purposes. First of all, it will enable the intelligent grower to determine with some degree of certainty the cause of the disease when it is due to a Fungus, and that is often the first step towards its eradication. Thus, if his Peach trees are affected with some Fungus disease on the leaves, he turns up the Index and finds two Fungi recorded there. He then turns to the General Characters in the Systematic Arrangement and can easily tell whether it is the Peach-leaf Rust or the Leaf-curl. Or if his Cabbages and Cauliflowers begin to turn yellow and the roots become distorted, he finds from the Index that it is due to a Fungus, a knowledge of which enables him to battle with the disease. Having traced the disease to its source, he may find treatment already prescribed in some of the Government publications, or can apply to the Department for advice. If there is no record of the disease in the Index, then the grower knows it is a subject requiring investigation. Further, the Host-index may be used in assisting growers to spot diseases due to Fungi before they have spread too far and become established. A great many Fungus diseases are overlooked for a number of years and allowed to spread freely before active measures are taken for their suppression, and thus what might have been easily nipped in the bud is now difficult to eradicate; so that another important use of this publication will be to enable Fungus diseases to be recognised at the earliest possible moment and action taken accordingly. Book excerpt: Fungi of Australia Volume 2B: Catalogue and Bibliography of Australian Fungi 2 is an essential reference for taxonomists working on Australian fungi, and anyone who wishes to use up-to-date names of Australian fungi. Together with its companion volume, Fungi of Australia Volume 2A, it lists all the names applied to Australian macrofungi and provides the up-to-date accepted name for each species, along with a comprehensive listing of relevant literature. Volume 2B covers larger fungi in the Basidiomycota, along with the larger Myxomycota. Groups dealt with in this volume include bracket fungi, slime moulds, puffballs, earthballs, earthstars, stinkhorns, birds nest fungi, coral fungi, jelly fungi, polypores, and stereoid, corticioid and thelephoroid fungi. This important work includes entries for more than 1,700 accepted names. For each name the catalogue lists place and date of publication, taxonomic synonyms, cross references to misidentifications and a comprehensive list of all works in which the name has been used in an Australian context. The extensive bibliography contains over 1,800 entries and includes not only taxonomic publications relevant to species described from Australia, but also publications on fungi in relation to forestry, agriculture, ecology, medicine, chemistry and general biology.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a biography of a scientist who pioneered the development of plant pathology in Australia in the 19th and early 20th century, and was internationally acclaimed. After 20 years as a plant pathologist, he was asked to find the cause and cure of a serious physiological disorder of apples. While the cause eluded him, and everyone else for another 60 years, he again won international gratitude for the improvements he brought to the apple industry. However because he did not find the cause, he was deemed to have failed by his political masters who were malignantly influenced by a jealous rival. The discovery in 2012-2013 of government files covering the period of the bitter pit investigation, from 1911 to 1916; reveal the extent of the unjust criticism of McAlpine while history has vindicated the management recommendations made to reduce bitter-pit losses. The focus on bitter-pit management late in McAlpine’s Career also meant that those who value his memory have been less aware of the remarkable achievements of McAlpine in the time before he left Great Britain – the brilliance of his teaching and drawing skills –featured in the early teaching texts for botany and zoology (the latter with his brother) which are now accessible on-line. The objective of this book is to demonstrate that (i) the view that McAlpine had failed in his quest was wrong and seriously unjust (ii) McAlpine achievements extend beyond plant pathology and include significant contributions to the 19th century teaching of botany and zoology, contributions which reinforce the adage – a picture is worth a 1,000 words.

Commemorating the centenary of the British Mycological Society, founded in 1896, this book gives an account of the British contribution to mycology, both at professional and amateur level. A variety of distinguished British and American authors give an authoritative commentary on the state of mycology, and on potential future developments in fields in which British mycologists made important breakthroughs. The book is introduced by an overview of the British contribution and personal views on pioneering work on aquatic hyphomycetes, tropical mycology and the amateur contribution. Later review articles treat a number of subjects in depth such as physiology, systematics, ecology, chemistry and mapping. This unique book will be of great interest to all professional and amateur mycologists in both research and teaching.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Neither plants, nor animals, nor fungi, the myxomycetes are a surprisingly diverse and fascinating group of organisms. They spend the majority of their life out of sight as single-celled amoeboid individuals in leaf litter, soil or decaying wood, foraging for bacteria and other simple life forms. However, when conditions are right, two individual cells come together to give rise to a much larger, creeping structure called a plasmodium, which produces the even more complex and often beautiful fruiting bodies. Indeed, the fruiting bodies of myxomycetes are often miniature works of art! Their small size (usually only a few millimetres tall) and fleeting fruiting phase mean that these organisms, although ubiquitous and sometimes abundant, are overlooked by most people. However, recent research by a few dedicated individuals has shown that Australia has a very diverse myxomycete biota with more than 330 species, the largest number known for any region of the Southern Hemisphere. This comprehensive monograph provides keys, descriptions and information on the known distribution for all of these species in addition to containing introductory material relating to their biology and ecology. Many species are illustrated, showing the diversity of their fruiting bodies, and greatly facilitating their identification. This book will give naturalists a new insight into an often overlooked group of organisms in addition to providing an incentive to search for the many species which have undoubtedly thus far escaped notice.
