For the appreciation of the classical past is an act of present perception, not a mere memory of popular verdicts. The classics live only because they still express the vital feeling of to-day. The new art must do more, - must speak for the morrow. And as the poet is a kind of seer, the true critic is his prophetic herald. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Beethoven's Symphonies in Their Ideal Significance, Explained by Ernst Von Elterlein: With an Account of the Facts Relating to the Tenth Symphony To the present volume has been appended the late Ludwig Nobl's ingenious paper on Beet hoven's Tenth Symphony (first published some years since in the Musical Times) as, albeit somewhat visionary and dealing with a highly problematical subject, it will not be found altogether irrelevant or uninteresting in association with a commentary to the actually existing nine Symphonic Works of the master. Book excerpt: After the long dominance of German masters of the musical art, a reaction could not fail to come with the restless tendencies of other nations, who, having learned the lesson, were yet jealous of foreign models and eager to utter their own message. The later nineteenth century was thus the age of refraction of the classic tradition among the various racial groups that sprang up with the rise of the national idea. We can see a kind of beginning in the Napoleonic destruction of feudal dynasties. German authority in music at the beginning of the century was as absolute as Roman rule in the age of Augustus. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Beethoven and His Nine Symphonies Tms book is addressed to the amateurs of this country, who have so immensely increased during the last fifty years with the increase of good and cheap p'erformances - a movement headed by the Crystal Palace, under the wise and able direction of Mr. Manns. In short, it is a humble endeavour to convey to others the method in which an amateur has obtained much pleasure and profit out of works which in their own line are as great as Shakespeare's plays. It would be presumptuous in me to, attempt to interest professional musicians, who naturally know already all that I have been able to put together, and much more; and in a more complete and accurate manner. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Story of Symphony Weingartner's Symphony Writers since Beethoven carries on the story up to recent times, but more prominence is given in this to German compositions than to the equally, if not more, important works of the Russian and other schools. The nearest approach to a complete work on the subject is Sir Hubert Parry's masterly article in Grove's Dictionary, which treats exhaustively of the history of the symphony up to the time of Brahms. But in this, again, more modern composers obtain but slight consideration. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Symphony Since Beethoven IF in wandering through some Alpine valley, while we were standing awestruck before a colossal mountain, whose snow - crowned peak rose shim mering in the distance, and we were perhaps deem ing that man happy whose courage and strength were great enough to carry him over this peak to enjoy the view beyond, when suddenly our medi tations were interrupted by a voice at our side saying in all seriousness, I am going to climb over that mountain into the blue clouds beyond, we would have little doubt but that we were con fronted either by a foolhardy dreamer or a mad man. We would scarcely ridicule the man, but rather look upon his simple faith with eyes of pity. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from On the Performance of Beethoven's Symphonies The secret of the artistic rendering of musical compositions, and hence the secret of the conductor's art, lies in the style. The reproducing artist, in this case the conductor, must have absorbed into himself, so to speak, the peculiarity of each master and each masterpiece, and his rendering must be subordinate to this peculiarity even in the smallest details. As regards the time, the phrasing, the treatment of the sounds in the orchestra and even the technical manipulation, the conductor must assume a different personality according as he is conducting the Eroica or the Pastorale, Tristan or the Meistersinger, according as he is trying to reproduce Haydn or Beethoven, Berlioz or Wagner. I believe I am not going too far when I say that a conductor of genius unites in himself just as many personalities as he reproduces masterpieces. One of the essential conditions of the style of an execution must be clearness, and this is the quality which will occupy us here with regard to Beethoven's Symphonies. This, is precisely the point in which these greatest of all orchestral compositions offer the greatest difficulty, for even a perfectly correct rendering does not always make the intentions of the master as clear as they become by the reading of the score, or even by the playing of the pianoforte extracts. Indeed it must be confessed that many passages awaken a feeling of confusion rather than of pleasure. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
