Book excerpt: Seminar paper from the year 2016 in the subject Business economics - Banking, Stock Exchanges, Insurance, Accounting, Lucerne University of Applied Sciences and Arts (Banking & Finance), language: English, abstract: Switzerland is one of the most recognised countries for financial services and consists of four main financial centres; Basel, Geneva, Lugano and Zurich. Banking sector can be classified as one of the main contributors in Switzerland's financial sector. The following paper addresses two main financial centres in Switzerland as ranked seventh and 13th, respectively by The Global Financial Centres Index: Zurich and Geneva According to the last GFI report: "The top financial centres of the world are very well developed, sophisticated and cosmopolitan cities in their own right. Successful people are attracted to successful cities and it is perhaps no surprise that these centres are ranked so high by financial services professionals." Both financial centres profit from Switzerland's environment which provides legal stability, and high living-standards and as a result, both financial clusters play an important role in the global business of finance. This paper aims to analyse the current situation as well to provide an outlook for the future. Due to the limited time as well the limited scope, this paper focuses only on the banking sector, mainly analysing twelve major financial institutions with a strong national presence. Section 2 covers the background and history of both financial centre, Geneva and Zurich. Section 3 provides a short overview of the market structure of the financial sector as a whole in each financial centre, describing the number of market participants as well as the offered products and services. Section 4 contains information regarding the competition in both financial clusters in Switzerland and measures competition using the Herfindahl-Hirschman Index (HHI) on two selected examples. Section 5 provides an empirical analy

The financial sector grew well above average in the past decade and now accounts for almost 10 % of GDP. Compared to the economy-wide average, it creates more than double as much value added per employee and it is a major contributor to Swiss ex port revenues. But this is no cause for complacency. The industry is subjf:ct to rapid change as the competitive climate has become rougher nationally and internationally. Major structural weaknesses have corne to the surface which raise serious questions about the extent of the required structural adjustments. Thus, banking was an ideal candidate for a major case study in the framework of the National Research Programme No. 28 which is devoted to Switzerland's external economic challenges. The programme was commissioned by the Swiss government and is carried out by the Swiss National Science Foundation. The research project on the fmancial sector was directed by Professors Niklaus Blattner, Hans Genberg and Alexander Swoboda who assembled a team of research economists from the Graduate Institute of International Studies, the International Centre for Monetary and Banking Studies (both at Geneva) and the Labour and Industrial Economics Research Unit at the University of Basel. This joint research effort has yielded an impressive crop of descriptive data, analytical insights and policy-oriented conclusions.

This book was released on 2018-06-26 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As well as marking the tenth anniversary of the collapse of Lehman Brothers and the consequent unleashing of the global financial crisis, 2018 is also the year of negotiations on the terms of the UK's exit from the European Union. Within a decade the banking world has witnessed two epochal events with potential to redraw the map of international financial centres: but how much has this map actually changed since 2008, and how is it likely to change in the near future? International Financial Centres after the Global Financial Crisis and Brexit gathers together leading economic historians, geographers, and other social scientists to focus on the post-2008 developments in key international financial centres. It focuses on the shifting hierarchies of New York, London, Paris, Geneva, Zurich, Frankfurt, Singapore, Hong Kong, Beijing, Shanghai, and Tokyo to question whether Asian financial centres have taken advantage of the crisis in the West. It also examines the medium-effects of the crisis, the level of regulation, and the rise of new technology (fintech). By exploring these crucial changes, it questions whether shifts in the financial industry and the global landscape will render these centres unnecessary for the functioning of the global economy, and which cities are likely to emerge as hubs of new financial technology.
Book Synopsis Switzerland and its Banks by : Nils Herger
Download or read book Switzerland and its Banks written by Nils Herger and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2023-09-19 with total page 185 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides a history of Swiss banking not confined to stereotypical opinions about secret numbered accounts. Instead, the presented history covers other intriguing events and developments beyond the famous issue of banking secrecy and the corresponding scandals. Topics covered in the book include the early financial innovations by banks in Geneva to handle the sovereign risk on bonds issued in pre-revolutionary France, the monetary chaos that led to the creation of the Swiss franc, the rather peculiar banknote competition and free-banking system in Switzerland during most of the nineteenth century, how the country and its currency became a financial safe haven after World War I, the golden age of Swiss banking when Zurich was briefly one of the largest financial centres in the world, and the exceptional shocks during and after the recent global financial crisis. In sum, a fascinating story emerges about an internationally important banking centre in one of the most unlikely places in the world. This book is a must-read for students, scholars, and researchers of economics and finance, as well as practitioners interested in a better understanding of economic history in general, and Swiss banking in particular.
