This 2010 Article IV Consultation highlights that after a year-long decline in real GDP, the economy exited the recession in mid-2009. In response to the crisis, the authorities took a series of actions in a broad range of policy areas. Financial sector measures also helped to stabilize financial markets and reduce systemic risk. The authorities are now contemplating how to exit from the current accommodative stance.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a guide in the minefield of Swiss real estate, narrated by a serial buyer who made plenty of mistakes so that you don't have to. Contents House hunting in a tricky market Real estate as an investment Price levels and market cycles Mortgage & tax optimisation The risks and rewards of off-plan buying Chalets as second homes Why you need to read this book Real estate in Switzerland is a funny old market. It is illiquid, opaque, of dubious value for money and generally difficult to navigate. Yet, people from the world over are drawn to it like moths to the flame. It feels as if the more inaccessible and complex it becomes, there more prospective buyers are intoxicated by it. One reason for this, I believe, is that Swiss property is all things to all people. It has long been a safe haven investment thanks to the Swiss franc's legendary strength and low interest rates. However, it conveniently doubles up as a holiday destination as well as a secondary residence for long-term expatriates and economic refugees, or serves as a discreet address away from the public eye for politically exposed people. At the same time, Swiss property appeals to many an aspiring family seeking a practical and relaxed country to settle in, as well as an asset that is largely uncorrelated with the vagaries of global financial markets. Without a doubt, the Swiss property market follows its own rules, unperturbed by what happens in the rest of the world. The reason arguably lies in Switzerland's peculiar history. It is not the only country to have gone from abject poverty to considerable wealth within a matter of decades, but it stands out as having done so despite being entirely deprived of natural resources, energy and international clout, all while lacking access to maritime trade. It is hardly surprising that undergoing such a kind of rapid change in national fortunes would give rise to one or the other contradiction in the way things work, of which in the property sector there are plenty. However, time and again, when frugal habits of the rather recent past clash with the brashest and most plutocratic expectations of our time, it is fascinating to witness how it all tends to work out surprisingly well in the end. Looking back at my own real estate history in this country over the past fifteen years, including the opportunities that I seized, those that I missed, the lessons learnt, the insights gained, bullets dodged, victories clawed from the jaws of defeat, followed by defeats clawed from the jaws of victory and lessons unlearned have been so abundant that I felt compelled to put pen to paper and write a cautionary tale about it all. I had to write this book, if only because I couldn't stand the naivety of people who oddly expect everything to work like in their home country and inevitably get frustrated when that isn't the case. But there is more to it than that. This book stems from a deep-seated love-hate relationship with real estate that is seeking a productive outlet, at long last, in being turned to the service of readers. It was high time that some light was shed on this thorny subject. The local property market was literally crying out for it. And so was I.

Book excerpt: This Detailed Assessment of Observance on the Insurance Core Principles on Switzerland analyzes that the insurance industry in Switzerland is well developed having among the highest insurance penetration and expenditure per capita in the world. The sector is dominated by a few players writing significant international business. The life sector is dominated by two players, responsible for 54 percent of the business and the top 10 life insurers account for 97 percent of the market. The industry has weathered the 2008 crisis well; however, the current low interest rate environment is affecting the sector. The lack of availability of Swiss government bonds to match long term liabilities of life insurers and pension funds could be a source of vulnerability. The long-term nature of the liabilities of life insurers and pension funds could in principle be matched by investment in Swiss government securities. Supervision focuses on ensuring sufficiency of liquid assets to meet policy liabilities. Policyholders have priority claims over the tied assets. In addition, robust solvency requirements ensure there is enough capital to safeguard the insurers’ financial soundness under adverse conditions.

Book excerpt: A timely guide to the complex financial markets and banking secrecy of Switzerland Since 1934, when Switzerland's federal bank secrecy law was passed, the line between myth and reality with regard to Swiss banking has been blurred. But over the past decade, there have been dramatic changes in the pressures brought to bear on all facets of the Swiss financial markets and banking sector. Recent developments and agreements have potentially weakened Swiss banking secrecy, and with that said, it is time for a book that lays out the history of Swiss bank secrecy and puts these twenty-first century changes in perspective. Swiss Finance is a thorough overview of the Swiss financial markets and the banking secrecy this country has become known for. It covers key topics to practitioners both abroad and in the United States involved in Swiss banking and the Swiss financial markets. Discusses what the Euro-debt crisis may mean for the role of Switzerland as a financial powerhouse Reveals how new secrecy agreements with the United States and Germany will impact private wealth management Addresses Asian competition for wealth management and tax havens Switzerland is one of the largest financial markets in the world and a global power in private wealth administration. Whether you're a private wealth advisor, Swiss or U.S. banker, or other finance practitioner involved in the Swiss market, this guide is essential reading if you intend on achieving future success in this arena.

Book excerpt: In Real Estate Titans, Erez Cohen shares the advice and learnings of the world's leading real estate experts to create a guide for becoming a savvier real estate player. Cohen draws on his experience as a research and teacher’s assistant at Wharton Business School with an investment expert—and his mentor—Dr. Peter Linneman. Throughout his career, Cohen has collected first-hand knowledge from meetings with such real estate titans as Ronald Terwilliger, Sam Zell, Joseph Sitt, and numerous others. Cohen wanted to understand how these real estate giants became so successful, so he refined his quest into three critical questions: What inspires these titans to work so hard and reach such extraordinary levels of success? What are the main elements and traits inside of them that propel them to be so grandiose? How have these individuals, who had less resources, succeeded on a much bigger scale than so many of their competitors? Real Estate Titans contains the 7 key lessons distilled from interviews with several of the world’s greatest real estate investors. These critical lessons offer insight into the mindset, tactics, and habits that each of the interviewed titans possess. Once you implement these key ideas—which you won’t find anywhere else—into your business, it will grow exponentially within a matter of months. Real Estate Titans offers an insider’s view into several of the most successful investors on the planet. The book’s compelling stories and lessons show why real estate is such a wonderful and important business, and it also offers a roadmap for becoming a world class real estate player.
