Book excerpt: In these days of terrible erosion in human values, when man is guided by the deadly materialistic view of himself and the world, the role of this book is like that of a beacon light which awakens him to a new value system. Jesus had said, ‘love thy neighbours as thyself’, but why? In these pages the readers get the answer to this question. The practice of ethics and morality when based merely on religious precepts leaves the modern man with the seed of doubt in his heart as he fails to understand the rationality, behind them. Ethics need to be founded on the rock of rationality which alone can help the modern man to make them a part of his life whole-heartedly. This wonderful collection from the Works of Swami Vivekananda precisely fulfills this role.

Book excerpt: Arthur Schopenhauer was the first Western thinker who incorporated thoughts of the Upanishads in his own philosophy. His appreciation for Indian philosophy and culture is quite well known. Presently serious research work is going on in different disciplines in different academic institutions and universities in the West to examine the influence of Indian philosophy and culture in the philosophical thinking of Germany, particularly in relation to Arthur Schopenhauer and vice versa. This book provides a common platform for interaction to the scholars from East and West to express their views on the link between Eastern and Western philosophy. It significantly contributes to a better understanding not only of the connection between Schopenhauer and Indian philosophical systems but also of the increasing interest in this relation. The book includes papers of eminent scholars. The papers shed new light on the relationship between Schopenhauer's philosophy and the different aspects of Indian philosophy and culture, and thus offer a rich source of research material.

Book excerpt: Swami Vivekananda believed that eternal spiritual values alone can hold the ship of human society firmly and give stability to it and, in the process, bring meaning to the varied human activities and endeavours. This book in 9 volumes comprising the speeches and writings of the Revered Swami Ranganathananda, the 13th President of the Ramakrishna Math and Ramakrishna Mission, posit the 'Eternal Spiritual Values' as an answer to the many fundamental social, political, economic, and spiritual problems that beset the modern age. Swami Ranganathananda travelled across the world and enthralled people with his magnificent exposition of India's ageless culture. He gave due place to the role of science and technology in human affairs, while remaining firmly rooted in the Indian scriptures. He beckoned to the past only to illumine the present; he held up the spiritual goals of the Vedas and the Upanishads but didn't decry the material benefits of modern science and technology. His exposition of Indian spiritual and social values is as much derived from an intensive study of ancient and modern books as from his own authentic experience as a Sannyasin. Published by Advaita Ashrama, a publication branch of Ramakrishna Math, Belur Math, volumes 1 and 2 deal with ‘Philosophy and Spirituality’, volumes 3 and 4 with ‘Great Spiritual Teachers’, volumes 5 and 6 with ‘Education for Human Excellence’, and volumes 7, 8 and 9 with ‘Democracy for Total Human Development’. This is volume 4 of the nine-volume series.

This book has 150 selected sayings of Swami Vivekananda on Universality. It deals with Religious brotherhood and Universal Selfhood. These thoughts of Swami Vivekananda broaden our horizon and look at the whole universe as One. Swami Vivekananda himself said that he will continue to inspire men everywhere until the whole world shall know that it is 'One with God.' The contents of this book are based on this very utterance.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Polemic Paper from the year 2018 in the subject Politics - Didactics, Political Education, grade: 2.8, language: English, abstract: This work focuses on Swami Vivekananda and on the relevance of his thoughts on the philosophy of education in the 21st century. The 21st century technological evolution had contributed to globalisation of knowledge-based education, which has changed human lifestyle. Such change had led to a condition where moral values are left far behind. In fact there is gross erosion of values of individual to keep pace with the society and in order to fulfil one's desire to be at the top. The erosion of moral values of truth, co-operation, non violence, peace, love, respect for parents, elders, authority and hard work is leading to the decay of moral and social fabric of society at a speed never witnessed in the history of civilization. Our stress is too much on standards of living and not on standards of life. Though the problem of decreasing values extends to the whole range of human activities, education field is regarded as the proper place to inculcate positive values. The Indian culture is deeply rooted in spiritual and ethical values, unless these values find their way into the life of individuals, education will lose its significance and will not fulfil its aim. Though we have made progress in knowledge but still we are not above the levels of our past generations in ethical and moral life. In some way we have declined from their standards. Today we have been successful in making professionals but not the human beings. Because the system of education made the learner to feel that there is nothing noteworthy and appreciable in traditions and moral. Therefore there it is a need to revisit the Swami Vivekananda's philosophy to reform the present education system.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With historical-critical analysis and dialogical even-handedness, the essays of this book re-assess the life and legacy of Swami Vivekananda, forged at a time of colonial suppression, from the vantage point of socially-engaged religion at a time of global dislocations and international inequities. Due to the complexity of Vivekananda as a historical figure on the cusp of late modernity with its vast transformations, few works offer a contemporary, multi-vocal, nuanced, academic examination of his liberative vision and legacy in the way that this volume does. It brings together North American, European, British, and Indian scholars associated with a broad array of humanistic disciplines towards critical-constructive, contextually-sensitive reflections on one of the most important thinkers and theologians of the modern era.
